New discovery, for me anyway, is Electric Flower , a trippy, sun-drenched psychedelic duo comprised of solo artist (and sometime Yeah Yeah Yeahs member) Imaad Wasif and drummer Josh Garza who YOU might recognize from The Secret Machines but who I'LL always refer to as "the drummer from the best Texas Brit-rock/shoegaze-inspired band you've never heard of, Comet ". The duo's self-titled EP, which you can listen to below, is available on iTunes and on Amazon (and probably a bunch of [...]

Imaad Wasif and LA-based accomplice Bobb Bruno give The Doors track "Go Insane" a 21st century facelift, subbing it's 12-bar like sections with some extra fuzzy breakdowns of psychedelic rock sickness. The track is a favorite off the recent BEAT LA double LP Record Store Day compilation which also features some great covered cuts from other LA-based artists including No Age, Crystal Antlers and more. There are plenty of unique releases set for Record Store Day Black Friday , but Narnack and Greatminds Records have partnered up for a truly meaningful contribution. Amassing a diverse collection of musicians from the Los Angeles scene, they've put together Beat LA , a compilation of equally varied covers of classic artists from the SoCal region. What's more, proceeds from all sales benefit Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières in their continued aid endeavors in earthquake-torn Haiti. For a taste of the album, have a listen to Imaad Wasif 's rendition [...]

Think of this as a match made at a gloriously noisy station in heaven: Electric Flower pairs one of the most formidable shredders around, guitarist Imaad Wasif, with one of the most ferocious drummers, Josh Garza of Secret Machines. The story goes that they met while trapped in an elevator in London some years ago, reconnected later in L.A. and decided to team up and make noise. Now they have a 12-inch vinyl EP coming Nov. 8 on Narnack Records , with another due in the new year. The music fuses Wasif's psychedelic leanings with Garza's thunderous [...]

Electric Flower is a new group from Secret Machines drummer Josh Garza and solo artist/Yeah Yeah Yeahs collaborator Imaad Wasif . They will be releasing their first material on November 8th via Narnack Records in the form of a 3 track 103 EP. The EP will be limited to 500 red vinyl, foil stamped copies, and preorders are currently available from the label . Check out all three EP tracks below! Electric Flower - EP by bbgunpress

The Los Angeles underground has always been a sprawling, gnarly place, and a new collection titled "Beat L.A." goes where few covers albums have gone before. The project — from Narnack Records and Greatmind Records — is a charity effort benefiting Doctors Without Borders and that organization's relief efforts in earthquake-torn Haiti. The compilation (out Aug. 2) sees artists from L.A.'s indie present covering songs from L.A.'s punk past, and with some remarkable results, especially Devon Williams' "Yellow Pills" (20/20), Imaad Wasif's "Go Insane" (the Doors), Josh Klinghoffer's "Anymore" (Thelonious Monster), Night Horse's "Lie [...]

You've possibly already heard Imaad Wasif without even realising it. The Canadian has played with Yeah Yeah Yeahs (as a touring band member and support act), and has also contributed to Lou Barlow's music (both his solo work and the New Folk Implosion) and worked on the soundtrack to last year's Where The Wild Things Are . His third album, The Voidist , however, is the first time most European audiences will get to hear Wasif's solo output and it's quite an experience. Citing other astrals plains rather than other bands as influences, Wasif's compositions inhabit [...]

We all set out to brave a warm evening in Austin, looking forward to catching the greatness that is the New Pornographers . Accompanying the band on this summer night was Imaad Wasif and The Dodos . Date 7/23/10 Location Stubbs Doors 7pm Tickets $25 @ Frontgate A long time favorite of everyone in the ATH offices, The New Pornographers , are making a highly anticipated stop at Stubbs Friday evening in Austin. In better news, The Dodos will be supporting the group on this leg of their tour. Hooray! I'd also [...]

The New Pornographers probably have a rule about inviting people with them on tour...over the phone or by email. They can't do it in person because those receiving the offer would either have a manic dance party, poop their pants, or hyperventilate just a little too much before they calmly reply, "uh, sure" to make it a comfortable experience. But once included in this roving troupe of indie superheros, I'm sure this person feels a sense of overwhelming gratitude to be part of something bigger than your average band. And this lends itself to a pretty rad show. [...]
This week we only have one show to bid on, but it's definitely a big one. Just a quick heads up to click over to Aquarium Drunkard for his tribute to Television's Adventure. The sampler (a follow up to his RAM on LA compilation) features eight local LA artists tackling tracks from the revered New York City band's second album. The highlight comes six songs in with Imaad Wasif's (w/Lykke Li) take on "The Fire." For me, Television has always been about the guitar work of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd and Wasif's inspired playing respectfully honors them. Local Natives and Deadly Syndrome come in right behind Wasif... [...]

Television's 1977 album "Marquee Moon" is recognized as one of the greatest debut albums of all time. The quartet's follow-up, "Adventure," was excellent (if less rough around the edges) in its own right — and now L.A. blogging luminary Aquarium Drunkard has cast a spotlight on it with the release of "L'Aventure," a digital compilation that features eight Los Angeles bands covering the album's eight tracks. Like AD's 2009 release "RAM in L.A." — on which 11 local artists covered the songs on Paul McCartney's 1971 album "RAM" — "L'Aventure" is a [...]
Making their way around the globe, The New Pornographers visit Studio Q in Canada to promote their new album 'Together'. They perform an acoustic version of "Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk" a bit slower version than on the album. We can't wait to see them live on tour with The Dodos and Imaad Wasif . See Imaad's collab with Lykki Li below. The Dodos just came back from Bonnaroo (below) Imaad Wasif :: The Fire (feat. Lykke Li)
As a follow-up of sorts to last year's stellar Ram on L.A. compilation, Aquarium Drunkard has curated a tribute comp for Television's overlooked 1978 sophomore album Adventure, with all donations from the (free) download going to benefit the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Like the McCartney tribute, L'Aventure features covers from some of L.A.'s finest, including this version of "The Fire"... click through for more...

Due out June 22nd: L'Aventure - A Los Angeles local sampler featuring eight L.A. bands each covering a track off Television's second LP, 1978's Adventure . Following up last year's RAM On LA , Justin Gage of Aquarium Drunkard, gathers up eight of his favorite L.A. artists in an effort to highlight Los Angeles' disparate music scene. L'Aventure will be a suggested‐donation digital compilation with 100% of proceeds going to the Silverlake Conservatory of Music similar to RAM on L.A. which benefited No More Landmines. -- via [...]
Raise Hope For Congo is the name what easily may be the most eclectic charity album of the year. Specifically designed to bring awareness to the plight of women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the 18-track effort features a diverse collection of musical super stars, including rapper Mos Def, piano maestro Norah Jones, UK dream popster Bat For Lashes, Mexican folk rock duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela, alt-rockers Travis, Latin fusion outfit Ozomatli, Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice, American country star Sheryl Crow, and African duo Amadou & Mariam. The record was put together by KCRW [...]
