Billy Corgan has been holed up in L.A. in recent months, writing new Smashing Pumpkins material, and at the Sky Saxon Tribute on Friday night at the Echoplex, he sprung one on the audience. Fronting a one-night-only band called Spirits in the Sky, which featured members of Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Electric Prunes (as well as new Smashing Pumpkins drummer Mike Byrne), Corgan debuted a pop-leaning number titled "Freak." And it was good, very good, something that recalled the material on "Mellon Collie," only fresher. Radio programmers, start your engines. You can't quite get the full power [...]

Imaad Wasif has a pretty impressive resume. I first heard of the man when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs tapped him for the Show Your Bones tour, but he had been a part of the indie scene long before that, contributing to Lou Barlow's Folk Implosion before that. After paying these dues, Wasif crafted two solo albums of his own, his self-titled debut in 2006 and Strange Hexes (which also featured his backing band, Two Part Beast) in 2008. On October 13, he returns with a new album called The Voidist via Tee Pee Records. [...]
The rise of this kind of all-day indie sockhop is proof L.A.'s warehouses aren't just for freight, psytrance and the odd orgy anymore. The Nomad Gallery Art Compound, a friendly art-bunker wedged deep in untrendy Frogtown, embraced the underground party set's chill equation of art + music + abandoned industrial space = fuck the Sunset Strip with July 4th's raucous "New Weird America" Festival.

[Happy 40th to Flaming Lips drummer Steven Drozd. Now keep the beat while I run through tonight's exhausting list of shows:] Give the Church credit — most bands who are still going concerns at the end of their third decade are just playing greatest-hits sets. The Australian quartet, touring behind a new album, "Untitled #23," that is almost Floydian in its shimmer, hits the Roxy tonight along with Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody . ... Also visiting from Down Under: Children Collide join [...]
Dan Collins (who interviewed Polyamorous Affair here) will be DJing their show (also featuring Blue Jungle) tonight at the Echoplex and Chris Ziegler (who interviewed Magic Lantern and Imaad Wasif) will be DJing their show tonight at the Prospector. Will Roky Erickson records be present at both? Statistically likely. More info on both events here [...]

Alaska! aside, the last time I wrote about Imaad Wasif was just prior to the release of his 2006, self-titled, solo debut. Released on Kill Rock Stars, the LP's press bio offered the following caveat: "(the album) is meant for the late night vibe or the early morning fear" - which proved to be [...]

As a thanks for reading, I wanted to start an annual give-away. I was going to call this the 12 days of Diss-mas, but that's pretty lame. Every day for the next 12 I will be giving away something. It may be big. It may be little, but hey, it's free. Let's start out slow. One cd by Immad Wasif and a couple of YYYs stickers from Show Your Bones. It's his solo release on Kill Rock Stars. He's been in alaska! , The New Folk Implosion, and toured with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs . [...]
