Imaginary Cities burst onto the scene and captured our imaginations (an a Polaris nomination) with their stunning 2010 debut Temporary Resident . On May 28th the Winnipeg duo come back with their second full length Fall of Romance . On the new album, principals Marti Sarbit and Rusty Matyas, take a much more elaborate approach to the music. The songs are more layered and elegant than the material on their debut. As a result though, they are also less peppy and contain fewer of the marvelous hooks that made the first record so compelling. [...]

Here's the third vignette from hometown heroes Imaginary Cities , who have been teasing their forthcoming record, Fall Of Romance , over the past month with brief, cryptic clips soundtracked by mere snippets of new tracks (check out the first two here and here ). This particular Guy Madden-inspired video waxes on the peculiar passage of time, as a rather austere-looking woman watches her own reflection slip away before her eyes. It's all soundtracked to the appropriately-titled " Still Waiting ," a cut washed in a sea of blissful horns and tidally lapping harmonies. [...]

by Tiana Feng As per suggestions from friends on Facebook I wanted to check out Reuben and the Dark and Lowell during CMW. It just so happens that they were also playing the Lee's Palace show with The Besnard Lakes so I stayed the whole night there and discovered some great new artists. Reuben and the Dark started the night off with their Fleet Fox-like folk music. However, they were emotive without the [...]

It took us just a minute or so of "Chasing Sunset" before it suddenly dawned that, hey, this is really a special song. Sweetly orchestrated and boasting a killer chorus hook, "Chasing Sunset" is also the lead track from End of Romance , the upcoming May 28 long-player from Imaginary Cities and the follow up to their critically-praised 2010 debut Temporary Residents . Led by singer Marti Sarbit and songwriter Rusty Matyas, the Canadian band tapped Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, New Pornographers) to co-produce the album with [...]

Canada's Imaginary Cities earned themselves some real recognition with their 2010 debut, Temporary Residents , including a nod for the Polaris Prize. Chiefly the duo of songwriter Rusty Matyas (The Waking Eyes, touring member of The Weakerthans) and singer Marti Sarbit, the band will return on May 28th with their latest album, Fall of Romance . "The fact that it was just primarily myself and Marti in the studio," Matyas says, "also meant a serious lack of clashing egos - just friends building music together." That ease of musicianship can [...]

The exodus of more and more respectable grown-ups has become a token of Seattle's Capitol Hill Block Party weekend, leaving the notorious Pike-Pine corridor to the throngs of its most music-obsessed friends and neighbors (many of whom have some personal connection to the hundred-plus bands playing, staying truly representative of the neighborhood). This year's headliners include Major Lazer, Diplo, Youth Lagoon, Twin Shadow, Grimes, Aesop Rock, Phantogram, Father John Misty and Neko Case. Of course, the short list depends on whom you ask. With political wrath coming down on the Block Party, this could be the last hurrah [...]
