He wrote a song for her, they recorded it, and then liked the results so much that they made a whole album. This duo is sultry and soulful music charms the listener with it's melodic pop rock only surpassed by the dynamic vocals of Marti Sarbit. As an ode to Canada I have curated a list of my top 5 Canadian albums from 2011, complete with witty commentary and what the band "sounds like". Sheepdogs – Learn and Burn Sounds like: The 70's In one year this bearded, 70's inspired band [...]

[ download ] [tweetmeme] Imaginary Cities is a male/female duo who hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Their debut full-length, Temporary Resident , which includes "Hummingbird," made the long-list for Canada's prestigious Polaris Prize. Hidden Pony released Temporary Resident in March of 2011. "Hummingbird" offers up a mix of propulsive rhythms, fleshed-out hooks, and touch of drama. Centering on Marti Sarbit's strong vocals, the track blends an off-kilter warble (think Kristin Hersh) and melodic accessibility that's reminiscent of recently [...]

And after a successful stint at last week's Winnipeg Folk Festival , it's clear [...]
