Wye Oak is already posted, and over the next 11 days we'll be posting the rest of the live audio and tons more coverage from our first annual Aural States Fest! Thanks for coming out! All photos: Shantel Mitchell OK, I am sure I am not alone in thinking that this was one of the best shows that I've been to in awhile. Not only did this show [...]
Add your own adjective to finish off the title (plus it ties in nicely with a little gem later). Snow, ice, rain and damn cold weather can't keep this fine weekend of music away. Lots of talent from the region and elsewhere are out and about. Here is what's happening. Friday Photo Credit: Band's Facebook The XPN Free at Noon session does it again and brings Annuals to the World Cafe [...]

Photo credit: Greg Szeto DC's Edie Sedgwick is a unique performer that you might say bears little in common with his namesake. The original Sedgwick was a socialite actress most recognized for starring in Andy Warhol films. The Sedgwick in question (pictured right) purports to be the original's transgendered reincarnation and is signed, interestingly enough, to legendary Dischord Records. Odd until you realize that Sedgwick is a brazen and adventurous pop culture parody act. With track titles culled from celebrities and cinema, Sedgwick's songs are [...]

Title Track's John Davis at the Black Cat, Washington DC There are no cities that have shaped my musical taste more than Washington, DC . This may seem odd since I grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, and I am too young have experienced the initial punk explosion with Teen Idles and Bad Brains or the glory of Revolution Summer. Either way, Dischord has provided a fair portion of my life's soundtrack. When I moved here in September, it seemed like the District was in a bit of a musical lull, but it was still [...]

Luckily, my editor is on in-between semester break. Otherwise, I'm sure he would be in T.A. mode and grade my late post accordingly... However, I dragged my feet somewhat deliberately. What's the point of a 2008 summation if you don't have at least a little critical distance between current time, and the past year? One doesn't write a book report until the book is actually finished. A conclusion about a hypothesis can't be reached until the experiment is actually completed. You don't say, "Wow, baby…that was some good [...]

Photo credit: Greg Szeto Two of DC's premiere noise-makers trekked up to Baltimore for a decently populated, Monday-before-Christmas early show at the Ottobar. I walked into a brightly lit Ottobar (the likes of which I have only seen at closing time and the occassional dance party) scarcely past 8:30, and Caverns were already mid-set. Luckily, I walked in to the closing strains of "Dance you son of a bitch," one of the best cuts from the forthcoming Kittens! EP. Caverns sounded a bit off, slight tuning [...]

Evan Dando (Credit: Artist's Myspace) Gifts are coming to the IA area a few days early. A great lineup of shows this weekend. Quite a few big names are rolling through the area to make your holidays bright. The fighting Gallagher brothers have somehow not killed each other yet and put out a new album, Dig Out Your Soul , in October. Now Oasis is touring the states, hitting the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden Friday and the Patriot Center at GMU Saturday. Will it be a great show or a fist fight [...]

Song Imperial China ~ " There Is No Translation " myspace plays: 5,300 mp3 download (via instrumental analysis ) ~DC Style~ It feels like DC in the early 90s with some Chicago scene mixed in. Think Fugazi meets Tortoise . Bonus: "Radhaus" ( mp3 via gimme tinnitus ) Video [...]

Postpunk from DC? Really? Kinda hard to believe, but yes. I am talking about Imperial China . Their self-released Methods EP will kick your ass. Get ready for some angular (sorry too lazy to grab a thesaurus) riffs and instrumental goodness. Listen: "Radhus" (box.net mp3) Amazon MP3 page is here . DRM version is here . The weekend is almost here, but don't let Friday's classes or work schedule keep you from going out tonight. Plenty of bands to see, so get out there. It's Feet Night for the Baltimore Round Robin Tour at the Starlight Ballroom in Philly. How does this work? Pretty simple, you the fan are in the middle of a circle, surrounded by all the bands. One plays a song then moves on to the next and so on. If you experienced last nights Eyes Night, you [...]

Email us at auralstates@gmail.com or comment this post for a chance to win a Caverns prize pack featuring a bunch of new merch (shirts, lighters, stickers, buttons etc). Two of our DC favorites, Imperial China and Caverns , are playing a show with True Womanhood tomorrow night at the Black Cat Backstage. To whet your whistle, here's a slew of A.S. exclusive downloads, one new one (an old fan-favorite) off Imperial China's Methods: EP and a few older ones from Caverns: [...]

This weekend is shaping up to be a good one. The heat won't be too bad and plenty of shows are coming through the area. Friday To begin the weekend, there are some huge shows Friday night. Of course, the so called biggest band in the world, Coldplay is in Philly at the Wachovia Center. Opening is Santogold . MGMT is playing yet another sold out show at the Starlight Ballroom with Violens and [...]

Blood Brothers Make Grave? Pretty Girls Make Blood Brothers? Nah. Jaguar Love . Their full length album hits the shelves/servers in less than one month (August 19th). It is entitled Take Me To The Sea . And if you have not heard "Bats Over The Pacific Ocean" yet, I implore you to click here . The album art looks like this: Listen to one of my favorite tracks from Take Me To The Sea : [...]

Bound Stems' Bobby Gallivan and Imperial China's Brian Porter owe each other a little gratitude. Porter has housed the Bound Stems Chicago collective at his home in Washington, DC on the few occasions that the band has come through town on tour. Likewise, Porter is indebted to Gallivan for the name Imperial China, which was a history class Gallivan took while in college, where the two met almost 10 years ago. The two friends reunite on Friday, July 25th, when Bound Stems and Imperial China play DC's Velvet Lounge with Pittsburgh's The Seeing Eyeballs and [...]

As you may already know Melvins have a new album. It is called Nude With Boots . The lead single is also called "Nude With Boots". You can get it here or here or here . This is probably the Melvins most accessible work since Stoner Witch . Dig the double drummers and the 70's metal guitar tone. Listen: "The Kicking Machine" (box.net mp3) "The Stupid Creep" (box.net mp3) Weirdass Official Site is here . Ipecac page is [...]
