Photograph by Steven Walter South by Southwest is kind of like the Twitter of music festivals. It's peppy, popular, easy to mock, highly corporate and desperate to hide that fact with little stabs at techy subversiveness. The scene on the ground is as though social networking itself was suddenly given life by a bored trickster god, as musicians of every flavour and every level of grunginess mingle with industry suits and club kids on spring break. The fact that for the first time in my life I was spending a good portion of my time in [...]

Ok, so if you've been paying attention here at the hill or anywhere else that is vaguely concerned with the musical goings on here in Halifax, you know that the inaugural M Fest is going down this August in Dartmouth landing Alderney Landing. It takes place Sunday, August 7th, and the full lineup was released yesterday : Broken Social Scene Hey Rosetta! Ted Leo and the Pharmacists Surfer Blood Diamond Rings In-Flight Safety Carmen Townsend Glory Glory [...]

After waking up at a reasonable hour, I made my way into the fray that is SXSW during St. Patrick's Day. In fact it wasn't long before people started stumbling down the streets in WAY too early drunken stupors. It's still a mystery to me why grown adults can't pace themselves even on a day that requires you to drink pretty much all day long. Get it together people! In-Flight Safety Anyway, one of the best things about [...]
As per usual, the Ack and I will be nowhere near Austin, Texas next month when the famous South x Southwest music festival takes place. We'll be here in Halifax cursing the never-ending winter and griping about all the SXSW emails that will continually remind us that we're missing a lot of tacos, beer & BBQ. Oh, and music. But, with the news that our favorite festival will be hosting a showcase at SXSW , we thought at least one post on the festival couldn't hurt. Obviously this is that [...]

Last year we did a few of these "Christmas Party" posts to get some of the Xmas songs from Canadian artists sent to us posted up on the site. I was thinking about doing the same this year, but realized we hadn't been sent many Xmas songs at all this year compared to last. I have no science behind this, but if it is true, I likely know why: everyone in Canada has been sending their songs to Ro Cemm at The Line Of Best Fit for his second annual Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada Christmas tunes compilation [...]

I know, I know, I'm likely JFK-ing your mind with this one, first a Tuesday edition of our remix-featuring WTAP post series last week, and now I come with it on a Wednesday? Hell yes friend, hell yes. First of all, I have yet to meet a Wednesday that couldn't be livened up with a quality remix, and secondly, there isn't any day of the week that won't be improved with a posting of a shirtless Kid 'N Play pic. So done and done. It's no secret [...]
One of the highlights of the last few Halifax Pop Explosions has been the quality of the church shows that have been put on at grand old St. Mathews church. The Forest City Lovers/Davd Myles/Joel Plaskett acoustic-y show from 2007 remains one of the best HPX shows I've seen, but the Meligrove Band/Retribution Gospel Choir and Timber Timbre/Jenn Grant shows from the last couple years were also very impressive. So I always check for interesting church shows at St. Mathews when the HPX sched comes out, and there's a good one on Friday, Oct. 22nd, as In-Flight [...]

Last night found a collection of low flying stars gathering in Halifax @ The Seahorse Tavern. We had Guthries, Kinley Dowling and her stlying boots, Share, In-Flight Safety, Heavy Blinkers and many many more. Out of nowhere, Matt Mays keyboard man Adam Baldwin delivered a country fused, Tom Petty-inspired collection of rocker to warm things up, and then Matt Charlton flooded the stage with at least 8 friends including Christina Martin, Jason MacIsaac, Andrew Sisk, Dan Ledwell and Jon Mullane. The band ran out of outputs, so Charlton was forced to bust out interpretive dance moves and drink instead of [...]

Filed under: Canada With all the attention being paid to music coming out of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, it's easy to miss the steadily increasing wealth of talent in Canada's Atlantic provinces. The recent nominations for the 2010 East Coast Music Awards prove the talent pool in the Maritimes grows ever deeper, with artists like rapper Classified, folk singer Jenn Grant and former Polaris Prize short-listers Two Hours Traffic and Joel Plaskett each earning multiple nods. Canadian-indie mainstay Plaskett leads the charge [...]
