2009 is doing well musically, as it is another good week for releases. The new albums from The Bird and the Bee, Loney Dear and A. Armada as well as the Of Montreal EP are all excellent. This week features a good mix of pop, folk, electronic and post-rock for everyone to enjoy. IN-FLIGHT SAFETY - WE ARE AN EMPIRE, MY DEAR Despite the success of In-Flight Safety 's debut album The Coast Is Clear , it did not take a genius to figure out that the sophomore release was going to be a difficult hurdle for this Halifax band to jump over. The reason for this, is the fact that it has become quite common for Coldplay to be mentioned in an In-Flight Safety review almost as much as the band themselves are. The similarities [...]

Not sure what albums to spend your hard-earned cash on this week? Well, my friends, this is exactly what the Daily Graboid is all about! Take a sample of the new releases this week, and maybe you'll find something you didn't expect to discover. This week's highlights include new records from The Bird and the Bee , Loney Dear , and Cotton Jones (Michael Nau of Page France ). Or maybe you would be interested in something more familiar like Bruce Springsteen's or Franz Ferdinand's latest. [...]
Release date: January 27, 2009 In-flight Safety is one of the many bands coming out of the smoking hot East Coast Music scene. With this their second full-length album they have thrown down the gauntlet and served notice that this is not a band to be trifled with. From the opening strains of the lovely waltz-like, "I Could Love You More", to the closing strains of the anthemic, "Fill Our Wounds", In-flight Safety has put down a strong, solid musical journey. One of the many things I like about this CD is [...]

In-Flight Safety, " Actors " (MP3 courtesy of their promo company) Buoyed by silky sound reminiscent of the 80's New Romantics (Spandau Ballet and Roxy Music come to mind), it would be easy to blithely coast on the safe, warm feeling one might get on first listen to this song. However, if you listen to the lyrics (which some people don't...ignorance is bliss...), you will realize that coasting is not what this song is about. For all the seeming romanticism of the song, the lyrics are really about a small, very personal romantic death--the death of [...]

In my mailbox Toronto-based Dean Marino sent me his first album, which he made under the "nom-de-plume" EX~PO . "Central Meaner Street" opens with the kind of rock track you'd expect from the likes of Buffalo Tom and other great 90s bands. Guitars prominently lead the way, with vocals luring you into the world portrayed by this album. But little frivolties like "Banana Republic" or "Burn, burn, burn" offer a glimpse of what more this man is capable of... [...]

In-Flight Safety hold the distinction of being the first Halifax band the Ack wrote about here on the hill (that post also remains notable for being the lone recorded usage of the Keith Sweat crush, which is rather famous in it's own right, but I digress) whilst he was still living away from our beloved hometown. This may or may not be true, I'm certainly not going to spend the five minutes it would take to prove or disprove it, but what I can say about IFS with more certainty is that they're one of the [...]

In-Flight Safety is a band out of Halifax who will be releasing an album on January 27, 2009. The album is titled We Are an Empire, My Dear and it will be coming out on Night Danger Records, distributed by Outside Music . We hooked up with vocalist John Mullane on our quest to bring you as many results possible of Canadian artists choices for the best music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What would be your choice for best album of 2008? John Mullane: The [...]

There are a lot of things to talk about on this Halifax Friday Morning. First, the handy post counter shows that this is our 2004th post. Hot damn. Two thousand posts that range from diatribes about women with holes in the ass of their jeans, personal vendettas against Raps writer Dave Feschuk, Sportsguy Bill Simmons and unfunny yutz Robin Williams, copious amounts of poorly written reviews that are usually about 1000 words too long, golden age rap jams, and more weather metaphors than you can shake a stick at. We've been doing [...]
A number of things have conspired to keep me from getting this stuff up, but I'm sure since we posted our initial recap plenty of people have been sitting eagerly by their feed reader waiting for the next installment. Well wait no longer, we've got a couple un-released songs from In-Flight Safety and 3 classic jams from The Weakerthans. Enjoy. MP3:: In-Flight Safety - Cloudhead [...]

Ooo, look at us with our fancy new clothes! As you may notice, if you've been by the site before, we've rolled out a new design for the hill today. In case you're somehow puzzled by the new header, it's an attempt to convey the fact that we try to cover the Canadian scene from coast to coast. Vancity's skyline can be seen on the left-hand side, T.O. is in the middle, and the town known as Haltown is on the far right. The Ack is in Vancouver, I'm in Halifax, and we both used to live in Toronto, so [...]
Due to my stupidity and some serious confusion, I missed my first radio show. I had the whole thing planned out - nearly every song chosen, ready to play and discuss. I suppose instead I will do this weeks radio show here! \\Open Road - Alex Woodard \\Cold Day - Sonya Kitchell Ive been enjoying Sonya Kitchell's work for some time now. This song is just beautiful. \\Coast is Clear - In
