Today is my birthday but you're the one getting the presents! Enjoy these five great tracks from some of my favorite recent releases! [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. Summer Fiction performs 12/1 at Johnny Brenda's Whenever some seriously inclement weather—like, say, a freakish rainstorm—takes over the city, having a lack of worthwhile arts-and-entertainment options later in the evening is usually a good thing. That way, you don't feel so bad about staying in the entire night, drying out your soaked clothes while drinking hot tea and watching re-runs of Law & Order . Unfortunately, there's not one, not two, but three can't miss shows going on tonight, all of which feature amazing local acts. So, Philadelphia: Get ready to get wet—again. At [...]
Perhaps you noticed it too: the frayed-denim melody, the working-class urgency, the howl. When In Grenada launched into an untitled, organ-led number to open their Key Studio Session last month—having requested Nebraska levels of reverb on top of everything else—I had to ask: Is it possible to be a band from Jersey without some Springsteen influence seeping in? "It is!" responded singer-guitarist Jesse Leyh. "Another couple bands from Jersey that have really influenced me over the years are The Feelies and The Bongos, and neither of those two bands sound anything like Springsteen. I [...]

Photo by Jenny Swigoda Break , the debut LP by local quartet In Grenada , has been in steady rotation on my MP3 player since it was re-released five weeks ago. (And that's saying a lot—seeing as how a slew of other great new albums by local acts have been released in that time, considerably beefing up the competition for my oh-so-precious auditory attention.) Apparently, I'm just a sucker for jangly-guitar-driven pop with "whoa-ooh" backing vocals—both of which the track "Hills (Flooded Valleys)" (available for free download via the band's Bandcamp page) has [...]

Hills (Flooded Valleys) - In Grenada Hills (Flooded Valleys) - In Grenada ( Free Download / Buy ) Philly's In Grenada's may still be growing, but their first album Break , a home recorded piece, has the polish and musicianship of a much more established band. Collected and recorded over a period of two years, the album originally consisted of 20 tracks that were weeded down to the 10 currently on the album. While the band members apparently shifted during this time, the music itself has a consistent and definite direction, [...]

"Familiarity breeds contempt." There's probably few places where that is more true than in the world of indie music snob bloggers. We are constantly looking for the next crisp sound-the next band who can take something ordinary and give it a subtle, peculiar, or even violent twist. At least most of the time. Nothing on Philadelphia's In Grenada is going to blow your brain out. It all hues pretty tightly to the indie rock formula pioneered by The Arcade Fire, but at the same time, the album delivers. In spades. [...]

take me, take me away ♫ In Grenada - Distance And Temptation If the opening 10 seconds on this jam doesn't get your hips swinging then you need serious psychological help (or hip replacements). Well, the hip swinging-ness just keeps on coming as "Distance and Temptation" gets steadily groovier and more spastically danceable. Their debut LP Break is out now and I haven't dug in yet but based on this jam I'm looking forward to good times! Bury your face in MySpace /// eMusic [...]

Don't fret too much about Kanye canceling this week's G.O.O.D Friday, guys! A bunch of songs is better than one, right? Hopefully then the latest edition of our Friday Mixtape will be more than enough to tie you over for the weekend. Artist: In Grenada Latest Release: Break Genre: Pop/Rock/Indie Their latest press release states In Grenada was "born from the ashes of Philadelphia's premier ukulele indie-rock band, Movable Type." I'm assuming here that most everyone who reads this doesn't follow the ukulele rock band scene all that closely, so In Grenada's debut album will likely be your introduction to the songwriting of multi-instrumentalist Jesse Leyh, who makes a great impression with his new band on their first effort, Break . The record channels the tightly [...]
It's another big, big week for new releases from some of our favorite indie bands and artists, including LA's lo-fi, experimental outfit, No Age; the fifth studio LP from Deerhunter is a tour de indie with songs of psych-rock and electro-pop as only they can deliver; and the newest release from Abe Vigoda should be [...] Related posts:Best New Releases: Stars, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Club 8, Owen Pallett, Tender Trap, Chemical Brothers, Neighbors, Coliseum Recent Releases We Almost Missed VI: Owen Pallett, ARMS, Gareth Dickson, Monster Movie, Silver Seas Best New Releases: Elsinore, The Budos [...]

Recording as Bird By Snow , Fletcher Tucker has been releasing deep, genre-refracting sounds for the past five years with his output varying from dreamy drones to eccentric lo-fi pop to mountainous dub. His latest effort Common Wealth finds Tucker masterfully refining his songcraft with powerful arrangements, graceful melodies, and moving poetic imagery. Today, The FADER premieres one of the upcoming album's many highlights "There Is A Marriage". The songs on Common Wealth feel harvested (rather than written) from somewhere ancient, mysterious, and otherworldly. Recorded with Tim Green and arranged in collaboration with percussionist Spencer Owen, the album [...]

The new OMD album The History of Modern is (finally) out today, but thanks to the wonders of modern technology, I've been able to give a few listens prior to the release. The band still sounds unmistakably like OMD , as they have found inspiration everywhere in their back catalogue from Enola Gay to Walking on the Milky Way . Obviously the album is neither a new Architecture & [...]

In Grenada was born from the ashes of Philadelphia's premier ukulele indie-rock band, Movable Type, during the summer of 2007. Now, they make their presence felt with their debut release, Break. Stuck with a few left over songs and an environmental conscience, songwriter/instrumentalist Jesse Leyh plucked the tunes from the trash and saved them for his compost heap. Over the next two years those first few songs grew in the fertile environs of a home studio, watered by a monsoon of shifting and breaking relationships and the pressures of finding a new place in the world and [...]

I can't remember if this has happened in the history of the Friday Mixtape, but today is my birthday. So, excuse me if it's a bit short, quickly cobbled together from my dinign room table while I eat breakfast. I'm gonna go enjoy a day off from work, some sunshine with the top down, and pretend I'm not as old as I really am now. Enjoy. Tracklisting: Bad Books - You Wouldn't Have To Ask Brideshead - [...]
Well gang, I'm happy to say that these days our Friday Mixtape is really firing on all cylinders. The recent addition of our new Covers section (brought to you by Cover Me) has lifted the mix to a previously unthinkable level of awesomeness, and our other sections are feeding off that new energy. Alright, I might be exaggerating just a bit (I'm not sure if our sections can actively step up their game on their own), but I'm sincere when I say this tape is top notch. For our new formula, we kept the [...]
