Lots of exciting things have been happening on the home front these past couple of months whilst we've been gallivanting around New Zealand(thus the lack of daily posts). Perhaps the most exciting event on the local music scene in 2011 was the Valentiger Front Man Show - which took place in our home studio Stone House Recording . The ever-so talented Michael Knorr has started to put together videos from the show - with the always impressive Peter Fox providing the audio. [...]

With In Tall Buildings visit to Stone House Recording - we welcomed our second Chicago band to the studio. Despite being one man down(san bass player), In Tall Buildings delivered and landed a solid punch. We think you'll agree. In Tall Buildings is the brain child of Erik Hall - a University of Michigan grad and member of the post-Afrobeat group NOMO. But don't expect that here. The Chicago Reader says of the ITB self titled debut album: '. . .spacious, handcrafted pop, awash in synthesizers, reverb, and [...]

Still in town? Then you need to boogie on over to Lincoln Hall tonight for an epic show of epic proportions brought to you by Betta Promotions and sponsored by yours truly. And, of couse, here are three reasons why... 1. Pulling from the denser side of Wilco, the dramatic side of My Morning Jacket and a bit of the pluckier offerings of Fiery Furnaces, Santah create big indie rock that's nothing short of epic. Their songs are littered and crevices and canyons of smooth bass lines, slick guitar moves, steady beats and [...]
. Pheramones- We Already Know . . . . . .When in doubt open with pheramones. At least that's my philosophy when it comes to playlists i'm not sure what the track 1 should be. Energy, talent, pretentiously unpretentious... these guys have it all when it comes to being an ideal indie band. This song [...]

It's such a great weekend for festivals in Chicago. We've got Taste of Randolph occupying the West Loop with the salivating sounds of British rockers The Heavy and Swervedriver as well as local rockers JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound and The 1900s . Not to mention the three-day birthday bash going on at Saki featuring Great Society Mind Destroyers and much, much more. With so much rock happening there's really no need to wait. Let's get on with the show! [...]
Chicago's folky In Tall Buildings (a.k.a. Erik Hall) is featured in the newest Violitionist Session. What is a Violitionist session, you ask? Well, sir, it's a three interview question and three-song live performance from a band either from Denton, Texas, or passing through. In this case, In Tall Buildings was passing through and stopped by to chat and play two tunes from last year's self-titled record and a new song. The Violitionist Sessions aim to document a moment in time with no overdubs or recording tricks, and they've definitely accomplished that this [...]
Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • The Chicago Reader has put together a very nice guide to some of this summer's notable music festivals . • Not EXACTLY Chicago, but Pearl Jam are holding their big Lollapalooza-esque 20th anniversary concert at Alpine Vally in East Troy, WI . • WindyCityRock reviews locals In Tall Buildings & His Name Is [...]

In Tall Buildings Three I-just-wanna-sit-on-the-porch- and-read-but-first-I-must-do-t his reasons to applaud my dedication and then head over to the Whistler tonight... 1. Last we checked in with In Tall Buildings the members were readying their record store day 7-inch . Well that has come and gone so let's check in again. Oh, look, it seems they are playing. How fortuitous. We've heard talk of a new album so perhaps new tunes will be on display? Only one way [...]

Words by Brendan Being somewhat new to this whole blogging thing, I still feel surprised and honored that people choose to send me their music. I guess music is art and people want to share their creations, you know? Sometimes I don't really like what I hear, though, but I still get that tingle of ... I don't know, joy almost-a common bond over the human experience. But it's even better when someone says, "Hey, listen to this. I made it. You'll like it!" and I find myself saying, "You know what? Yes, yes [...]

By now, y'all know how much I love Chicago orchestra NOMO and their brand of post-fela afrosoul . NOMO's Erik Hall has been working on his second album for some time with his other band In Tall Buildings and he's recorded a 7" for the Record Store Day which will take place this saturday. The A side 'Warm Rock' is a cover of Chicago fellows Cains & Abels . Haven't heard them before really so can't rate the cover against the original, but this slow burning indie rock tune [...]

Photos: Ed Oliver Last night The Rural Alberta Advantage returned to the High Noon Saloon in Madison with James Vincent McMorrow and In Tall Buildings supporting the show. Ed Oliver was on hand to take photos. [...]

In Tall Buildings | photo by Elise Bergman How do you know spring is right around the corner? Well, Pitchfork tickets are on sale. But even more telling are the Record Store Day releases trickling out. Locally, word has come down that In Tall Buildings are set to release a brand new 73, titled Warm Rock , in time for the occasion on April 16. The A-side is a cover of "Warm Rock" by fellow Chicagoans Cains And Abels and the B-side is [...]

In Tall Buildings | photo by Elise Bergman March is finally here. You know what that means? Spring is in the air, snow is melting on the ground and pedestrians are spraining their ankles in newly formed potholes. Anyway, let's get on with our picks for this weekend's top shows, shall we... We've got In Tall Buildings at Metro , Tyler Jon Tyler at The Hideout and Nomo [...]
Here's some fantastic psych-alt folk rock to get you through the rest of the week: In Tall Buildings' (aka Erik Hall) latest self-titled album, with a damn fine live performance of "The Way To A Monster's Lair" recorded by Giant System Chicago. Also, here's the album's recording of the tune, along with track 7, "Suitor." [...]

Attention record-hungry Chicago: The Whistler is your new favorite place on Wednesday nights. The Logan Square bar will begin a new series next month called, "50 FREE RECORDS." For the month of February, the first 50 patrons to enter The Whistler will receive a free release from the Whistler Records catalogue, which includes funky experimentalists SHAPERS , the warming powers of In Tall Buildings , prehistoric button-mashers White Mystery and much more. Additionally in the coming months, The Whistler will also be featuring exclusive releases [...]

As we previously reported , Chicago's best multi-venue, dead of winter music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows , returns for its seventh year next week. Well, the good people at Lincoln Hall and Schubas , who are spearheading the whole sha-bang, have put together this really awesome mixtape featuring a great number of acts participating in the event from locals A Lull and In Tall Buildings to national buzzbands such as The Besnard Lakes and Twin Shadow . TMK 2011 kicks off next Wednesday with [...]
Back in April, our own Ross Meyerson championed Chicago's In Tall Buildings and called their Whistler Records debut, "It's the Tom Hanks of records. It is accessible to everyone: young, old, edgy, button downed, you name it." Well, since then, the band, lead by singer-songwriter Erik Hall, has been gaining quite a fan base in our fair city, and they were even featured in the latest, and 25th, installment from Giant System Chicago . This beautiful-looking performance features some sweet guitar work from Hall. You can catch In Tall Buildings kick off [...]
