Robert Semmer On the list of ideal days on which to announce a tour itinerary, there's not many occasions better than the day the album you're actually going to promote goes on sale. And so yesterday, with the official release of their latest full-length Monomania , Atlanta's Deerhunter have announced the itinerary for their Fall tour behind it. It's an outing that brings them to The Phoenix in Toronto on September 12, and that leg of the tour also includes support from Marnie Stern , who herself released [...]
Remember Röyksopp? No? Not even the one with Fever Ray? Well no matter, for although the Norwegian sentimentalists have slipped forever deeper into eternal irrelevance since the trailblazing release of their seminal (yes, that's seminal ) début Melody A.M. , their legacy lives on. For rarely does electronica resonate with such emotive potency, and it's in that same rich vein of feeling that Brooklyn duo Beacon appear to have bathed their mutedly, if only periodically sublime début full-length, The Ways We Separate . It's an album comprising incisive avant-garde cuts (Overseer) and sultry [...]
Downtown Record's Downtown Festival is coming to New York next month. What's that? Oh, it's a like a mini CMJ but with bands that are actually worth seeing and actually worth the nervous anxiety of missing someone's set because of bad show coordinating. Downtown Fest is kind of amazing this year. They recently published the schedule for May 10th and 11th with set times and venues. It's something along the lines of Fat Tony , Earl Sweatshirt , Ryan Hemsworth , Antwon , Branchez, Sky Ferreira , Teengirl Fantasy , Palma Violets, [...]

"I've got it under control now, but once you love vinyl it holds a spell over you forever!" Mixmaster extraordinaire and airwave celeb, Stephen Grainger - better known as Stevie G , adores records, especially the hunt for that vinyl-plated diamond in the rough. So much so that our recent interview teetered on the cusp of becoming an intervention at one point. Read below for the gory details. [...]
True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

There's been plenty going on since the last time we checked in. On the more low-profile side of our collective radar, Lapalux and the Bay's own Friendzone both dropped full-lengths heavy on heady, warped beauty. Somewhere in between Schoolboy dropped an absolute banger, Shlohmo and Jeremih teamed up, and the Basedgod dropped a tape that's damn near magical. On the visual side of things, well Tyler killed it-twice, and once along with Earl, and once for his solid sophomore album-which we'll talk about soon enough. Not to mention the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' short film piece, with [...]
inc. released a brand new video earlier this week for the song "Black Wings". "Black Wings" is off of No World , out now on 4AD .

The Aged brothers, the duo behind the understated, but soulful, inc. , have released the video for "Black Wings" off their LP 'no world' which came out earlier this year on 4AD. Watch the brothers as they swing chains around an abandoned farm. Let them soothe you with their mildly sinister, yet sultry melodies, as they sit around a bonfire at night...swinging chains. I have to admit this video seems reminiscent of something from the 90s that you thought was super sexy and cool when you were 13, but if you watch it now it's confounding and most likely [...]

I still haven't done the thing I talked about doing last week , opening this column up to late-night peformances or fan-taped camera-phone concert vids. I might still eventually do that, but this turned out to be a very good week for the traditional notions of music videos, and the best one in a while for big-budget major-label videos. As a fan of all the late-'90s/early-'00s videos where labels shipped rappers down to Caribbean nations and blew big money on their clips, I'm happy to include two such videos on the below list - and both of them are [...]
The SOTO inbox is always full of cool stuff that never gets to see the light of day on the actual site, and I’d like to change that. Los Angeles-based electro-R&B duo inc. released the video for their song "Black Wings" off their debut album for 4AD No World . The video is dark and meanders through clips of the brother—Andrew and Daniel Aged—swinging chains, walking past wood-chopping figures, and even pans past a renegade abandoned doll. There's plenty of darknes, plenty of sparks flying and plenty of ghostly vibes. Watch the eerie clip and stream their full album here . ( Fact )
