Soul peoples in the place to be---it's with great pride that I introduce the first guest writer since Vik came through with "Slang Meets Soul". Call this the beginning of a series if you'd like, but my approach to collaborating with other bloggers is essentially lawless and without boundary. My hope is to periodically break the monotony a bit by surrendering complete creative control to some of the greatest minds on the interweb. The content and theme will be entirely to the guests' discretion, and if this submission is any indication, I think this will [...]

For the handful of folks who checked out the series premiere of ABC's The Knights of Prosperity , you were not only treated to Mick Jagger yukking it up to the camera , but also repeated use of greatest hip-hop breakbeat of all-time: "Apache" from Incredible Bongo Band . Back in the early days of hip-hop , if you were a DJ, you couldn't be caught at block party without a copy of Incredible [...]
For those of you digging on Nas's new provocatively titled and awesome Hip Hop Is Dead , here's some of the samples he used..... In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - Michael Viner & The Incredible Bongo Band (From Hip-Hop Is Dead) Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved - James Brown (From Where Are They Now) After The Dance - Marvin [...]
I have been on a bit of a a soul/funk/r'n'b binge this week so today's four pack is a good indicator of where I'm at... Bill Withers - Use Me A great clavinet driven hook, Bill's honey voice and the overall funky vibe of this makes it a favorite of mine. Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band - Kiburi (Pt.1) I just picked up this reissue of an early '70s obscurity. It is essentially the roots of
An essential part of hip-hop history sees a rerelease tomorrow. Originally formed to contribute music to a B-Movie ( The Thing with Two Heads featuring Rosy Grier, see below,) The Incredible Bongo Band recorded the break-beat to end all break-beats with the song "Apache." Used repeatedly at block parties back in the day by legends like Kool DJ Herc , Grandmaster Flash , and Afrika Bambaata , the album Bongo Rock (1973) was a must-have for any practicing DJ. But sadly it went [...]

Looking for the (new) perfect beat (image via potusol ) In performance at Sunset Junction a couple weekends ago, Valerie Simpson (the finer half of Ashford & Simpson) told a longish story about self-reflection on birthdays and the need for anthems on such noteworthy occasions. Lucky for her, she has co-written some of the most recognizable songs in pop music , so she didn't have far to look ("I'm Every Woman" was her pick). But the point was well taken: [...]

Arguably, DJs took Apache , and with it, put hip-hop on the grid. Not arguably, it could be one of the most sampled songs by hip-hop artists of all time. Missy Elliot, Coldcut, Will Smith, Jurassic Five, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Moby and of course Sugarhill Gang, to name a few, have all found uses for the song in their own work. Originally performed by The Shadows, it was then taken by the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc and Bronx block party DJs of the late 70s and turned into a breakdancing/hip-hop anthem. [...]

While watching a movie on cable (would you think less of me if the film was Dodgeball ?) I nearly freaked out for a song I hadn't heard in years, The Sugarhill Gang 's version of the 60's classic Apache . Of course, I immediately pulled my Sugarhill cd out and played it loud. I had always known it was a cover, but not much else, so I did a little research. It's interesting to look and listen to the evolution of the song Apache . Originally recorded by The Shadows [...]
