It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

Why is it that the older you get the more old music you buy? Probably because as you get older you start to realize how little you know about music. Here's to all the labels that do the crate digging for you, because there is no way in hell you could have found all of this stuff on your own. Here are the top 15 reissues that I crossed paths with this year. 1. El Rego - El Rego ( Daptone ) I was vaguely familiar [...]

We're no strangers to the awesomeness of U.S. Royalty . In fact, we can easily say that they're one of our favorite DC bands. We were super excited when lead singer John Thornley agreed to do an Artist Mixtape for us, highlighting some influences on the USR sound. You can catch the band live at the 9:30 Club this Friday night, tickets available HERE . MP3: Index - "Turquoise Feline" I'm really into the wah-surf guitar. There's also a [...]

It is quite ironic that our feature is named Uncovered , as The Index are a band that have remained in relative obscurity since the late sixties. Disbanded after high school, the couple hundred pressings of The Index's albums were distributed only to friends and family. Like John Cusack in Grosse Point Blank , today we to return to Grosse Point, Michigan (The Index's ancestral town) for a three minute glimpse into the fuzzy, psychedelic sounds of the Detroit suburbs. Recorded in their basement - quintessentially the epitome of garage rock - The Index's first album, [...]

INDEX were a popular local psych rock group from Grosse Pointe, an affluent suburb outside of the Detroit, Michigan area. Their debut album, commonly referred to as "The Black Album," was released in December of 1967. The group consisted of drummer Jim Valice and guitarists Gary Francis and John Ford. 150 original LPs were pressed on DC Records, making this album very rare and super expensive. "The Black Album" was recorded in mono using a reel-to-reel tape recorder. This primitive, underproduced recording technique has only added to the album's mysterious, acid drenched mystique. Gary Francis played a Gibson 12 string electric guitar on most [...]

A haunting psychedelic oddity that's sort of a timewarp meeting place between the Byrds , Dick Dale , Hendrix , and the Velvet Underground . With their raw garage attack and over-the-top enthusiasm for feedback and wah-wah, the Index were very much of their time; with their brooding minimalism and savage, almost experimental electric guitar electronics, they sound oddly contemporary. Highlighted by the greatest cover of "Eight Miles High" ever attempted, [...]
Instead of a traditional Sunday Mix Tape this week, I'm going to highlight more great albums which were released in 2010. The one caveat here is that these are all albums which were reissued this past year. Or last year. Weird…two days ago I was saying "this past year" and now I have to say "last year" to not be considered retarded. There were plenty of great albums reissued in 2010. And a lot of them were more modern re-pressings, which I don't care for at all (really? Another limited-edition Group re-press? Ugh!). I'm [...]

Pretty much everything Kieran Hebden has turned his hand to in '10 has turned to gold. His latest disc jockey mix comes courtesy of Fact magazine and its a stunner. Impeccable selection that showcases a couple of his forthcoming remixes and dance floor favourites from the likes of Luke Abbott, Floating Points and Mount Kimbie. In the midst of the mayhem is this boogie classic from Index. Miss this at your peril . Index – Starlight (break) (Download) Mary Anne Hobbs pulled the plug for [...]

Index: Fire Eyes and Eight Miles High From: Index [DC records, 1967] Apologies for the break from posting for a little while, I’ve come into the possession of some fantastic soul and funk records and been busy going through them and picking out what I want to share with you the listener. Also, um, Modern Warfare 2 is really, really, addictive. While I put the final touches to my choices I thought that with the fantastic, rap, soul, funk and jazz we’ve [...]

Yet another index (or archive if you will) to put the links of all the bands and artists I've interviewed in one place. I've interviewed some fine bands from not just Ireland, but from all over the globe, and hope to continue doing so. Look out for some interesting Q&As in the future. NOTE: The date next to the artist's name is the date the interview was posted. The Chapters, 2 November 2009 CODES, 14 December 2009 Drive-By Truckers, 1 December 2009 [...]

My New Orleans Public School kindergarten report card. Same as it ever was. This has been a nutty year, filled with lots of sorrow which I worried I might never get over. But I did. Or at least, I'm out of the tunnel, and I amazed by my own resilience or whatever it is. Of course, music is the panacea, and I've found a lot of music to dig this year. So I'd like to share this mix with my readers. Including but not limited to: Cher covering The Kinks. Young Michael Jackson tackling the complexities [...]
