Coming out tomorrow from Dead Oceans is the latest from Bowerbirds . As you'd expect from this band, it's a kind, gentle, and pleasant album, rich with melodies and jingle jangle and remiscent of The Birds. Not music to work out to, but definitely music to come down by. Check out a few tracks, and the tour dates. Tuck the Darkness In In the Yard 03-17 Carrboro, NC – Cat's Cradle 03-21 Washington, DC – Black Cat 03-22 Philadelphia, PA – [...]
Singer-songwriter John Statz has submitted to my site before, but I haven't liked his work enough to let you all know about it. With his latest album, "Old Fashioned," he finally hit me right. The album is just what you'd expect from its title: A collection of largely acoustic love songs that would be comfortable on front porches. It's ironic that he's delivering it digitally, being that he's got songs on here that are literally about how TV is "killing us" and the entire album is about relying on simple things for simple pleasures. [...]
Music to be stoned to. Not high, stoned . Whistle Peak's lo-fi Americana fits in well with bands like Yeasayer and Colossal Gospel-bands who take traditional elements and play them a little ... Strangely. Sometimes there's an off-key accordi0n or a suffocated vocal. It's always a little bit whimsical, a little bit painful, and never, ever takes itself too seriously. It's music that's willing to take a chance at failure, or at doing something radical and weird. It's never broad, but never narrow. Hopefully, by the time you've read down to hear you're confused and curious enough [...]
Marlowe and The Sea is basically one dude from Jackson, Ms. His label and bio claim he plays folk music with bite. That might be catchy but I don't think it's true. However the failure to market Marlowe and the Sea as anything but sad sack indie folk doesn't have any effect on the quality of the tunes and the performances. And in this case both are high. The production is a bit rough on this ep - the hiss is almost distracting. But the roughness works and the tune "A Second-Chance [...]
In 1997 , Lou Barlow was having a going away party at the Green Street Grille in Cambridge, MA. That night, there was a show, hosted by the late Billy Ruane , a champion of the Boston music scene for decades whose escapades are worthy of the term 'legendary'. What made this night special was that this show would feature an acoustic performance from a still-relatively-unknown songwriter from Portland named Elliott Smith who had been touring & performing with fellow songwriter Mary Lou Lord . Thanks [...]
I have fallen into the emotional rollercoaster of the holiday season tonight just as I was trying to climb aboard. Partially, I know it's because the holidays seem to change meaning as I get older and, partially, it's due to unrelated events of the night. I've just come from watching the final hour of This Is England '88 which is, hands down, one of the most emotionally gripping hours of television I have ever watched in my life. I don't want to give spoilers, but if you're not familiar [...]
One of the two or three best acts I got to see at Bonnaroo 2011 was an early-in-the-day performance from the disarmingly wonderful and completely understated Sharon Van Etten . Her first album, 20102s half-mockingly entitled Epic , was (it turns out) actually befitting of such a name; something in every piece of those 7 songs could rip out your heart and shove it back in your chest before your tears had hit the ground. Her new album Tramp arrives in [...]

If Fozzie Bear decided to become an indie rocker, he might sound something like Alabama's Colossal Gospel . So, if you're unwilling to grow accustomed to a voice that sounds a little strained (and harmonies that, oddly, seem to match), this isn't for you. But trust me, if you stick with it, it's worth it. In fact, the voices sound like men trying hard to speak, fighting through either exhaustion or pain to form words, and it feels appropriate for this gospel-folk record. I've listened to Circles several times now. Gets better every time. [...]
Happy Halloween From The Devil's Blog With a witch, a skeleton and Satan this track couldn't be anymore suitable for a Halloween special if it donned a scream mask and starred in a Tim Burton special. New York City is pretty much already the definition of sensory overload, all by itself, on a random Tuesday, in the middle of nothing, when half of the city calls in sick. So when it's time for the annual cluster-you-know-what known as the CMJ Music Marathon ? If I were Johnny-Five , my circuits would have shorted. Lucky for you, I just eeked by in the "living to tell about it" category, so I here I am, living. And telling you about it! In no particular order, I present to you: my favorite finds from CMJ [...]
What makes Jenny O. , yet another female singer/songwriter from New York/Los Angeles who plays acoustic guitar, stand out from all the others who also have great voices, personal lyrics, and know how to compose a well-structured song? I'm not sure. But there's definitely something. Maybe it's the background "woos" in "Won't Let You Leave." They add a sense of reality here—they ground the tune, and keep it from being twee. I hate twee. Jenny O. is most definitely not twee. It makes the studio-produced song feel live, as if she's creating it right here right now. [...]

Download: Bro. Sweet Sweet Moon – I see things that you don´t see and that is blue, blue, black and Dylan
Und natürlich auf Toni Traubensaft und sein Cello, die ihm auf "I see things that you don´t see and that is blue, blue, black and Dylan" zur Seite stehen. Mehr davon? Gibt's bei Siluh Records . MOTHA FOLKIN SOUL (EP)
Somewhere between the most profane Liz Phair song and the acoustic rock-rap of Sublime lies Motha Folkin Soul. Terrible band name, great band. It's two guys and two acoustic guitars singing sad, loving ballads about eating pussy, being the "best mother-fucking friends," and bondage. Really. You have to hear this to believe it. Get it free on bandcamp . Best Friends They also released this video for the song "Mostly Hard" on youtube:
