"Oh my God, this is fast as fuck!!", these are the words are screamed the first time a caught a listen to Weekend Nachos new album, Worthless . Hailing from Dekalb, IL, Weekend Nachos aims to be the light at the end of my dimly lit hardcore tunnel. Leading off Worthless is the heavy guitar laden, breakdown consumed track "Hometown Hero." An in your face, punch your grandma in the kisser, power violence ferocious track…done in about a minute flat. "Obituary", the second track is much of the same. [...]

Crusty, doom-ridden San Francisco death metal quintet Vastum features members of Acephalix, Infest, and Saros/Amber Asylum/Hammers Of Misfortune (those last three via guitarist/co-vocalist Leila Abdul-Rauf). Their debut five-song Carnal Law , originally issued as a demo, is receiving proper widespread CD release courtesy of 20 Buck Spin (and vinyl via Contagion). This is real, deeply (and putridly) dense death metal, not the shiny, tech-y breakdown-happy sort. Which isn't to say the players don't have technique: Think Autopsy, Death, Carcass, Grave, and Nirvana 2002 (and plenty of other early Swedes), or more recently the amazing Greeks, Dead Congregation. Also mull [...]

http://www.facebook.com/lapsen oise I found this last night in my "To listen folder" which actually is just a mental checklist. Lapse is an extremely heavy powerviolence band from the Baltimore/DC are and has some excellent down tuned, sludgy riffs and some slow, driving drums that make you smash the shit outta what ever surface is around. Lapse really reminds me of Crossed out and Infest and even some Weekend Nachos in there. The six track demo hits a doom, bass heavy fever pitch with the last track "6253 that will have your insides shaking for sure! I [...]

If you don't pay attention to the great Blogged and Quartered blog, you're missing out. This guy was around back when and apparantly was an archivist even in the 80s. He posts exhaustive discographies of bands including out-of-print demos and even live radio shows they did. Last week he posted a 2xCD he put together compliling the entire INFEST catalog. Everything they did except one demo version of one song because his tape was too fucked up to get a good copy. This thing is an absolute monstrosity and a much needed document of one [...]

TUCUMAN ARDE: COUNTER INFORMATION AND THE CREATION OF AESTHETIC AND CULTURAL MILITANCY If there is one thing in my short visit on this planet has taught me, is that the relationship between art and politics is a pretty much a hot mess on your chest. Some would say that without politics there can be no art, and others would take the vice-a-verse stance and tell you that without art - politics would suffer as well. I find that art and artists that wear the skin of the liberal activist are amongst some of the most [...]
Papa Roach Naked And Fearless EP Polydor 22 June 2009 by Shane Holt Ahahahahaha. I see what you were trying to do here, Jacoby Shaddix. With this here EP of acoustic re-workings of tracks from Metamorphosis , your recent bounceback album, you're trying to add another tool to your nu-metal survivors' kit. And on the one hand, it's an admirable ambition to strive towards. Shame that on the other hand, the [...]

" Hispaniola is a miracle. Mountains and hills, plains and pastures, are both fertile and beautiful … harbors are unbelievably good and there are many wide rivers of which the majority contain gold…There are many spices, and great mines of gold and other metals…" -- Christopher Columbus, report to the Court of Madrid 1492 "They…brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for glass [...]

2008 is over. Everyone has been posting their "best of" lists for the year, and I don't see the point in even trying. There are so many records I haven't even heard yet and I can't imagine trying to order the records I have heard just so someone will think I'm cool. I'm sure there were a lot of records that went completely unnoticed that are way better than most of the stuff topping the lists this year. Maybe I'm jaded, but I can't get into a band like Torche, whose Meanderthal [...]
