Sounds of 2011 features many of the top songs and artists we've written about this year. We can never fit in all the ones we would have liked to, but Crimson and I took on the daunting task of summarizing a year of exceptional music and discovery. Keep yapping at us on Facebook and Twitter if you like what you hear. Chief Alexander O'Neal Interview [...]

Fresh to drop on France's ultra cool Whiskey Disco, we've got Cole Medina's super groovin' remake of Instant funk's classic 'I got my mind made up'. The original is so good we've actually posted it... High quality download and some links hidden from RSS feed, click through to http://www.feelmybicep.com for full download

The Salsoul sound is well known and has been endlessly sampled, including most recently in the big hit You're Nasty by Duck Sauce (Arman van Helden and A-trak) which, like many big house tunes, is mostly great because of the original disco hook. I was surprised when listening to this tape that it has a number of really good Salsoul tracks that are actually quite rare. The Double Exposure and Surface tracks are lovely and fairly well known. Anyway, ain't no groove like a D-Train groove if you know what I mean. This is [...]

the craziness of the last couple of weeks has somehow caused me to ween myself off my usual diet of nu disco & electronica and onto material of a slightly older variety. weirdness. i shouldn't need to tell you just how instrumental larry levan was with this whole modern day djing/disco/music thing. he was the man. i have spent the last few days basking in live recording glory from back in his paradise garage days.. these sets are an unbelievable collection of 70's and 80's funk and disco (among many other things) and the [...]

This is getting silly, I'm waiting on 16 records at the moment from all different places... Have been trying to hold out so I've got some beasts to post but it seems futile. Please accept my humble offering of a couple of classics to see the weekend through. An old In Flagranti edit from Sounds Superb Vol. 2; a 1981 Kano staple as featured in this awesome episode of The Scene; the unspeakably funky albeit cheesy B-side of Instant Funk 's I Got My Mind Made Up; and an epic Dan Hartman [...]
Some more track from the Salsoul mixes, with the genius that is Instant Funk. Outstanding cosmic funk that oozes with soul. Always goes down big, amazing riffs and james in this one, another... I got my mind made up - Instant Funk Something i've been doing lately, part through boredom, part through it being exactly the kind of activity someone of my character engages in, is going through my hip hop albums and finding the songs sampled within in their original versions, extending sometimes the most brief of passages to complete songs. It must be getting to me because rather than having A Roller Skating Jam Named "Saturdays" in my head it, it is most [...]

This week's mix on Allez Allez comes from Pink Stallone who you may recognise from the most recent Milky Disco compilation. Anyway, they've created a mix that is refreshingly unpretentious and a lots of fun! Pink Stallone - Allez Allez Mix Tracklist: 1. Impedance - Tainted Love (S. Anderson Remix) 2. Jeanie Tracy - Time Bomb 3. Bananarama [...]

Have been listening to Harvey's famed '98 Essential Mix plenty in these last sunny weeks, and every time remember how much I fucking adore this song. It really is classic beyond classic. I think I slightly prefer Larry 's remix to the original 12" mix, since it's a bit better structured for the club and it seems a hair beefier. It's just one of those songs where every element is memorable and the whole thing comes together perfectly. Pretty much as good as it gets as far as I'm concerned. Instant Funk [...]

the little dabs - "e.t. (every time) (download) The Little Dabs were two boys aged 4 and 6 from Philadelphia. Their father, Russell Dabney , was the drummer in a band called Gypsy Lane , back-up band for such bumpin' acts as the Village People and Instant Funk . This song was a #1 hit in Canada in the 80's. It's catchy as hell. buy

When I first heard this track, I thought it was cool, rolling along, nice instrumental funk with lots of breaks, then at 3:45, out of no were the sleaziest little vocal creeps in, perfect late night jam! Instant Funk - I got my mind made up
let's break it down live : during cmj i don't think i managed to catch a single act that did *not* have a micro korg. van she at the modular showcase was fun, pleasantly polished, and refreshingly sweet. digitalism at studio b hit it hard - and "zdarlight" always makes a crowd go spastic - but the show wasn't much to speak of. the knife were ethereal. those were the big ones i was prepped for. oh, and justice killed it. surprised? not at all.
