Dead Letter Chorus and Two Hours Traffic sharing the stage A couple of weeks ago we had a long weekend down here in Oz, to help the Queen celebrate her birthday. Of course dear Lizzie's birthday is not actually in June - that would make too much sense. Though I was tempted to break out the streamers and take a whack at a Camilla-shaped piñata (who said that?) I decided to celebrate at the good ol' Northcote Social Club instead. Headlining were Dead Letter Chorus , who'd just returned from a [...]

There is an ever-growing pile of new cds on my desk and even though I will eventually filter through them all, I've compiled a list of some of these new releases for you to keep an eye out for in the near future. With their good EP getting good rotation on the J's these boys are on the way up. I really like [...]

Turning up to see Camera Obscura's Australian tour early this year, I wasn't expecting much from the support acts. The first one up was a girl who couldn't have been more than 20 and was in the middle of a serious Joanna Newsom wannabe-phase. Next was a stage full of young indie-looking types including a trumpeter and a violinist. "Oh shit, it's Architecture in Melbourne," I said to my friend. I spoke too soon - up-and-coming Perth band Institut Polaire are something pretty special. Their seven-piece line-up works brilliantly and their literate and catchy take on jangle-pop is [...]
