Synth pop duo Io Echo takes influence from the Eastern world to create a style of pop with depth and layers. Their debut full-length album, “Ministry of Love,” combines a number of different sounds—from delicate singing to traditional Asian instruments to heavy distortion—to create new, complex sounds. Io Echo often juxtaposes Gika’s feminine, ethereal vocals with harder, more electronic instrumentation into tracks that manage to highlight the power of each without sounding discordant or chaotic. Title track “Ministry of Love” gives off an alternative, garage band vibe, with heavy drums and distortion. Though it sounds like it’s been [...]

The Joy Formidable was very impressive in their set at the Nikon Warner Sound showcase at Belmont during SxSW. Ritzy is a manic powerhouse and the entire band, including drummer Matthew James Thomas by way of his frontline half open drum kit, so everything possible to connect with the crowd. Big strobes, jumping into the pit, TJF is always encouraging the crowd to come along with them. IO ECHO was the opener at Emo's , and quite honestly, the more interesting act on the night. New to big touring, they get [...]

Earlier this month Iamsound released Io Echo ’s debut album ‘Ministry Of Love’, earning a spot on Pitchfork’s Advance list. The record has received moderate reviews, sitting somewhere beyond rock, electronic and industrial with some Asian influences thrown in. The L.A. duo (Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross) stepped out this week, releasing an interactive video for the title track via Noisey . It’ll have you spinning, clicking and dragging your way through it before long – here . Io Echo – ‘Ministry Of Love’ [...]

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds also participated in Record Store day this weekend - they've released a previously unheard song, "Animal X," from the studio session for Push The Sky Away . Somethings screeching in the background, while Nick Cave's signature almost spoken vocals grate over the top. [ Pitchfork ] Earlier today the prolific folk guitarist and singer Richie Havens passed away. Havens was known for opening Woodstock '69, as well as for the massive amount of music he created during his [...]

The last time Scottish rockers Garbage tried to perform in Kansas City, they weren't graced with the most cooperative weather. This time, they opted for an indoor performance at Harrah's Voodoo Lounge. Without the threat of weather grumping up their crowd, Garbage was free to really rock out. Singer Shirley Manson seemed extra into this performance and bantered with the audience. At one point she quipped that she got the band back together after hanging out at Coachella and thinking the bands were all horrible. She called Butch Vig and Garbage was back together. Photographer [...]

Thumpty-dump, thumpty-dump, thumpty-dump! Weaving through dense traffic on I-10, blazing past the gargantuan Cabazon dinosaurs and billboards championing musicians of all flavors (from the XX to Ghost BC), speeding by battalions of wind turbines is the greying asphalt that leads to Indio, CA - aka, the "out there" world of Coachella Music and Arts Festival . It's a wild sight once you're there: Ticketholders - fresh off the freeway from office cubicles and lecture halls - sport pasty complexions and keen, darting eyes. The air's filled with overheard chatter about the schedule, what kind of cute outfits everyone's packed, and whether [...]

Who: IO Echo in the Gobi tent. In 3 or Fewer Words: Gobi of love. Memorable Because: After rushing through security checkpoints to make the early sets, the BBLA staff hit the Gobi Tent just as one of our favorite local bands took the stage. And Ioanna Gika's sparkling, white kimono-inspired wardrobe alone was worth all the heavy breathing and sweating it took to get there. "You guys are the real music fans," the IO Echo front woman exclaimed at a quarter after noon in those signature glasses she's been sporting since [...]

LA vamps investigate ancient Japanese proverb, "Darkness reigns at the foot of the lighthouse." "One love from carriage to hearse / Till the end of time we'll always be / The Outsiders." Hallelujah and be still thy beating heart. If you've come looking for Mr and Mrs Apple Pie you're in the wrong neighbourhood. Last year, the Los Angeles shoegaze band IO Echo released their self-titled debut EP, and two weeks ago, they went extra-hard at SXSW. I somehow managed to accidentally catch their swooshing, mystery-drenched live show twice , by accident both times. Next week, they'll release their proper debut album Ministry Of Love . And right now, you can stream the entire thing at Pitchfork . Ministry Of Love is out 4/2 on IAMSOUND .
