The hoops season has ended. Yeah, there's still the remainder of the NBA season and the interminable playoff march, but that can't match the tension of its high school or college equivilant. I've gotten to see my alma mater win a national championship, but that wasn't as memorable as the run our high school team had in '83. Twenty-six wins, most of them in dominant fashion... ...two losses, both by one point, both on the opponent's court to a school that went on to win the state title that season. [...]

Here at GS we have a bunch of writers and we are all different, which is perfectly normal and healthy. This one is from Caroline Dufraine, which is our Belgium writer. While i was sleeping she left me this ace edit from Greek producer Eliot , which I've never heard before. The original is from 1983 by Irina Cara's. Enjoy..!!

The last songs Whitney Houston recorded will be heard in the film "Sparkle," one on camera and the other during the closing credits. Houston sings the gospel classic "Eyes on the Sparrow" in the film and duets with Jordin Sparks, the film's star, on a new R. Kelly song, "Celebrate" over the end credits. The film is in post-production and on schedule; Sony Pictures has it scheduled for release in early August. RCA will release the soundtrack. Houston recently finished her recording of "Celebrate." Sony executives were pleased with both the way Houston looks and sounds [...]

Future people looking back on Earth's history are going to be very confused when they open a 2010 time capsule containing Goldfrapp's "Rocket." Did the single slip through the time continuum from the 1980s? No, they'll learn how artists from later generations would ironically and sometimes blandly copy and sample from the glossy, flashy, and oft synthesizer-centered 1980s time period. Goldfrapp's "Rocket" recalls artists like Irene Cara and Olvia Newton-John but does little to progress their sound. It's second-hand bubblegum pop that retains the original's appeal but subsequently leaves the listener longing [...]

Thanks to Nashville Cream for letting us know that today is the 60th birthday of the 45-rpm single , a format that debuted with Eddy Arnold's "Texarkana Baby" b/w "Bouquet Of Roses" on March 31, 1949. They're having readers delve into their record collections to find their favorite examples of that format, but I figured it would be fun to share our first vinyl-single purchases, and where they occurred. My first crush of 45s—all of which were purchased at Pathmark, back when grocery stores thought music was a viable income stream and back when I thought "b/w" was some [...]

Actress/singer Irene Cara was no stranger to successful movie soundtracks when her single from the movie Flashdance was released in 1983. Cara had first come to pop culture prominence singing the Oscar-winning theme to the movie Fame three years earlier. Not only did she star in the movie, the song took Cara into the Top Ten on the pop charts. The movie Flashdance became a surprise hit and one of the biggest films of 1983 and the Cara-sung theme rocketed onto the charts. It cracked the US Top 40 in April and [...]

Apart from music, I've also always been interested in movies. And of course I always liked it when both genres came together and resulted in some entertaining hours at the movie theater or in front of the telly. There are lots of great music-movies, lots of cheesy, but still decent ones, and naturally, a lot of crappy ones. Here's a little rundown on some I remember: I didn't watch many movies during my younger days in the 70s, at least not at the cinema. One of the first I remember [...]
