I've never been particularly taken by Irepress before. I've got nothing against them at all, don't think they suck, certainly wouldn't wish van flips upon them... their music just never really resonated with me. But at the urging of self-proclaimed "Suckist" Dan Wolfson I checked out their new music video for the song "Cyette Phiur" [...]
I was elated to see all the recommendations for good elephants marching riffs following my love letter to that conceit earlier this week. I was a little less elated to discover that there's almost as much confusion over what qualifies as an elephants marching riff as is there over what qualifies as a taco riff. [...]

So our year-end lists and the holidaze took over (as they often do), and I've been snoozing on writing something about this show....but a few things ought be said bout these two bands. I included Irepress' recent Sol Eye Sea as an honorable mention on my Best of 2009 List, and for good reason: the Beantowners [...]

There's a distinct difference between 'best albums of the year' and 'favorite albums of the year.' Who am I to say what is the 'best' album? What makes an album better than the other? You've probably already figured out that I'm trying to say that music taste is subjective. The past 12 months have probably been one of the better years in music in a while. There were albums that defined genres (Merriweather Post Pavilion), albums that reinvented the bands sound (The Hazards of Love), albums that majorly disappointed (Mama, I'm Swollen), and albums that became a sign of what's [...]

Somewhere in Allston, there's an over-caffeinated barista/drummer bitching about Bad Rabbits. In less than a year — and with no album — the new-crack-swing pioneers have gone from nowhere to surfacing on every party flyer worth a damn. What resentful indie haters might not realize, though, is that Bad Rabbits didn't pull sudden renown from a top hat. They're the latest incarnation of Eclectic Collective, who spent half a decade headlining shows that your band opened. How does that taste with your bitter latte? READ THE WHOLE BAD RABBITS FEATURE [...]

So far this year has been quite musically mindblowing. But wasn't that kind of expected? With even more anticipated albums, songs, and tours on the horizon, 2009 is shaping up to be one of the better years on the decade. Top 5 Albums That Met/Surpassed My Expectations Simplistic and a combination of years of timeless work. Meticulously crafted and easy to get obsessed with. An instant classic. [...]

One of our now favorite Austin bands Calm Blue Sea are playing another show at Emo's on Sunday night. If you have yet to catch this band live or haven't heard their new record , make a point to do so before the nation picks up on them. Supporting bands for this one are Girls From Enola , Irepress , and Hotel Hotel . Doors are at 8 and show stars at 10pm. Download: The Calm Blue Sea - We Happy Few [MP3]
Mostly-instrumental rock, laced with repetitive, chanting vocals, from a band that I've never heard of prior to this but seems to collect some industry accolades. They stand a little apart from the current wave of instrumental bands on The Future... by emphasizing atmosphere over complex arrangements, though at times I think they threaten to break into some Don Caballero indie-aggro. Think of them more as Irepress with some tranq darts in their butts. This sort of approach can easily become background music for a scenester in a lethargic rut, but Hundred [...]
With Metallica taking supreme legacy and acceptance to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, heavy metal this week has certainly made public headlines in the music world. While the glitz and glamor shines bright for this early edition of April, the underground isn't looking too shabby either. A little while ago, we introduced you to one of North Dakota's heaviest doom metal bands Battlefields . As it turns out, not only are the Midwestern quartet finishing up their U.S. tour with label mates Irepress, their debut album Thresholds Of Imbalance is currently [...]
The adorable band, Company of Thieves performs "Even in the Dark" overlooking a "lucky horseshoe." Company of Thieves - Oscar Wilde ex-Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle's new project Spinnerette Ghetto Love Music Video directed by [...]
Brutal, cinematic, clobbering, psychedelic; all of which could easily describe the Sharon, Massachusetts five-piece instru-metal band, Irepress . Having built a small following with their debut album, Samus Octology , Irepress have continued with their brand of chiseled post rock with their latest release, Sol Eye Sea I . Sol Eye Sea I is an album filled with all the metal trimmings, minimal jazz primers, and cryptic riffs that hit out of nowhere with the pummeling impact of a meteor. Irepress is proving that New England is [...]
It was Wednesday night, and the turnout was surprisingly good for the show at Triple Rock Social Club featuring a billing Battlefields, Irepress, Frontier, and Vernal Pool. For braving the cold, fans in attendance were treated to a perfectionist display of some visionary one-of-a-kind doom, post, and progressive metal from some bands that the music [...]

Claiming itself as "the oldest city in the United States," St. Augustine, Florida is certainly a city to behold. Not only is it home to one of the nation's leading sports programs at Flagler College, it houses some of the most beautiful Spanish architecture from the voyages of Ponce de Leon, which include the magnificent Castillo de San Marcos just off the city's edges. Another somewhat overlooked treasure is one of the city's heaviest and musically interesting bands, Dark Castle . Proclaiming from their Myspace page that the "sands hold the time, [...]
Since joining Twitter last week (follow us!) my brain has been systematically reprogrammed to process information only in pieces of 140 characters or less. After the jump, quickie haiku-like reviews of all the new music that's arrived at the doorstep of the MS Mansion in succinct, Tweet form, plus MP3s! New releases from Mongoloid Village, [...]
Download audio file (sol_eye_sea_i.mp3) I was literally refreshing the Irepress iTunes store page to make sure I got this album as soon as I could. I haven't found another band quite like Irepress. I could probably come up with some concoction other rock/metal/experimental bands that might indicate what you're in for when you buy Sol Eye Sea I (2009), but where's the fun in that? Half the appeal of Irepress is that they're largely unpredictable. The music is about as crazy as the album cover indicates... and yes there seems to be a few [...]
It's unlikely many metal fans know it, but I want to go on record and say that the small independent Translation Loss Records label is home to two of the most noteworthy progressive metal albums that are being released this winter/spring. On February 17th, IREPRESS will begin selling, Sol Eye Sea I, their 1st album [...]
Our neighbors up north sure seem to know how to craft music in just about any light under the sun and make it sound awesome. This is the case with North Dakota's very own doom metal band Battlefields . The heavier than air quintet are currently set on releasing their debut album on Translation Loss Records , the downtempo and heavy handed Thresholds Of Imbalance. The album will see a March release next year, but that doesn't stop for the band right there, not by a long shot. Currently the band is gigging around a few [...]

Fans of Russian Circles and Pelican may want to look up at the storm known as Irepress looming above. Irepress shook up the instrumental genre with their debut Samus Octology back in 2005 and with their reissue in 2007. The album is filled with their insane brand of prog atmospherics and face melting instru-metal that has been generating fans from all over. According to TheHyp ; their follow-up, Sol Eye Sea I, will be released in January under the label Translation Loss. From the sounds of this recently leaked demo track, you can [...]
