For the first time in forever my inbox is down to less than 100 unread messages. Getting it below 500 took the better part of three days. What's crazy is not that there is so much crap out there - anybody who has spent more than ten minutes looking at the internet knows that the world is full of dumb shit - but rather that out of 500+ promo emails that I've gotten over the past few months, there were less than 20 post-worthy submissions. I know I have some pretty [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the release of the new album Fang by Portland-based avant-pop quartet Iretsu . Fang is full to the brim with intention and energy. Iretsu set out to write and record a playful, diverse yet accessible album – and they've nailed it. Written in four improv sessions and then broken apart and rebuilt, these songs bounce off each other in compelling directions, revealing addictive new pop dimensions with each spin. From the chiming glockenspiel and wavering synth of the opening title track to the atmospheric [...]
Iretsu - Humbuzzer Here is an awesomely catchy song that I came across the other day on YANP which got my foot tapping to the beat faster than any song of late. It has an edgy sound that borders between indie pop and punk. Their upcoming album, Fang , is coming out for download on May28th. Find out more at their Myspace .
Yesterday I knew nothing about the existence of Iretsu. Today I'm anxiously awaiting May 27, when I can hear the rest of their new album. MP3: Iretsu - Humbuzzer This track reminds me of how music used to sound when I was 18 and everything was new to me. It's not just that I can't give an [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings has announced the release of the single 'Humbuzzer' by Portland-based avant-pop quartet Iretsu. The track is another masterful example of Iretsu's signature experimental pop sound, tightened to its maximum potential around an elastic post-punk tune. Driven by a wonderfully insistent rhythm section and given lift-off by Ryan Cross's keening vocal, this brief yet muscular beast will stick in your head for the foreseeable future – at least long enough to keep you sated until the forthcoming album Fang drops in May. The impish kings of addictive and inventive songwriting are back. [...]

The first of Saturday's free shows at the Wonder Ballroom was from Ratatat. Photo taken by Flickr user Kyle kjten22, he's also got some other great MFNW shots. MP3: Ratatat - Mirando MP3: Ratatat - Shiller MP3: Ratatat - Seventeen Years After 90 minutes of a packed house dancing to the some amazingly danceable music, the Wonder was really, really hot. So hot, that Les Savy Fav lead singer Tim Harrington removed his tye-dyed shirt just one song into their set, revealing a chest so white that my camera's flash ceased to function [...]

If you haven't already been made giddy with sheer joy by the musical splendor that is Iretsu's Name Our Numbers, Numbers then you should let go of your shame and head to the HSR Store for a full EP preview and CD or Digital purchase. And if you still need more proof (is there not trust between us?) then check out the glowing review in the latest edition of Perth's Drum Media. Read then listen and then quietly say to yourself as you go to sleep tonight, "damn, those [...]

Making quirky, structurally complex avant-pop in the style of Menomena or a less ornate Broken Social Scene, local three piece Iretsu manages something quite special—persuaded me to hit repeat after a week spent listening to way too many bands. One of the nicest surprises on "Name Our Numbers, Numbers," the title track from its new 3-song EP, is how weightless the whole thing feels. The songs got a lot of things going on—wide, reverberating slabs of guitar; a spiraling keyboard line; elegant notes of glockenspiel and moaning violin. After a minute-long intro, you almost expect it to [...]

Iretsu released the addictive, serpentine pop constructions of Name our Numbers, Numbers today via Hidden Shoal Recordings. The EP is available now through the Hidden Shoal Recordings online store in both CD and digital formats as well as all good online stores. "Name our Numbers, Numbers is a masterful example of Iretsu's signature experimental pop sound – emotionally rich, melodically and rhythmically dynamic, and deeply satisfying." We enjoyed the single, and the two new songs are even better! Listen to the single below [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the release of the new EP by Portland-based avant-popsters Iretsu . Following hot on the heels of the release of the EP's superb title track , and last year's acclaimed album The Moon and Stars Remain in the Morning Sky , Iretsu present the addictive, serpentine pop constructions of Name our Numbers, Numbers . "If you haven't yet checked out Iretsu, then this is your chance to hop on the bandwagon before this Portland-based trio really take off. Currently [...]

Portland-based avant-popsters Iretsu have a new EP forthcoming from Hidden Shoal Recordings. This in and of itself is fabulous news but the awesomeness factor is cranked up twofold by the fact Hidden Shoal Recordings is offering a free download of the first single Name Our Numbers, Numbers . "All the elements are erratic if you were to try to isolate all the parts of the song and parse out what is happening. The song is marching. The song is staggering drunk up a hill, then tumbling down the other side, [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the release of the new single ' Name our Numbers, Numbers ' by Portland-based avant-popsters Iretsu . "All the elements are erratic if you were to try to isolate all the parts of the song and parse out what is happening. The song is marching. The song is staggering drunk up a hill, then tumbling down the other side, tearing its jeans and getting twigs in its hair—all of this in the first minute or so, but all the ideas and directions are calculated to a sum that is decidedly [...]

After an inordinate wait, Hidden Shoal Recordings are happy to announce that the amazing full length from Iretsu, The Moon and Stars Remain in the Morning Sky , is now available on iTunes and Amazon and will be also be available through eMusic and Rhapsody shortly. Due to some technical issues outside of our control the full version of the album was delayed in getting into these stores (even though the always trusty HSR Store has been shelling out copies since it's release). So if you haven't [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the release of The Moon and Stars Remain in the Morning Sky , the brilliant new album by Portland avant popsters Iretsu . The Moon and Stars Remain in the Morning Sky presents such a wonderfully individual and engaging musical vision that descriptors which suddenly seem to fit become redundant moments later. If you had to find a contemporary marker then perhaps a starting point might be Sufjan Stevens conducting The Arcade Fire. The album is a masterful example of the band's progressive [...]
