Another night, another great show at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass. This time we were treated to the sensuous and beautiful rhythmic flow of the indie hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux. Frankly, I'm still surprised her tour took her here of all places, especially how the majority of the performance's audience turned out to be mature to older white women. Not exactly the most lively and ethnically diverse crowd New England has to offer... but at least we were there to represent the under-40 crowd. The opener, A Severe Joy, plays like [...]

While every other blogger is busy posting the new Girls track (which is awesome even though I'm not a huge fan their last album) or the M83 song (less than awesome), and whatever else is generating a buzz, all I can think about and listen to at the moment are bluegrass tunes. If Bluegrass was a season, it'd be summer . It is best enjoyed outside, preferably near a river and a campfire. Recently, I've been voluntarily taking heavy aural doses of mandolin and banjo. I had a hard time resisting doing a jig while waiting for a train [...]

i used to love, and still do, the pickin on modest mouse record, and the ignorant person i am, assumed, that was the only one of its kind. yeah, as it turns out there are hundreds of pickin on compilations. who knew? clearly not me. here is a brief sample of them. come sail away - cornbread red - styx rocket man - iron horse - elton john self esteem - the offspring kissing the lipless - the shins [...]

So, cover songs? It's almost a taboo term in the music blogosphere. It almost goes without saying that everyone who makes a post about them has to start with 'I'm not usually a fan of covers but...". I don't see the big problem; I'm a massive fan of remixes and covers. I know the standard arguments: lack of personal originality, lazy musicianship etc., not to mention the horrible Pop Idol style covers you can hear on the radio all day. That being said, I think it's just as easy to criticise a horribly derivative artist under the same banners, just [...]

Choice of coverage says so much about a folksinger's generational outlook. Okay, every once in a while, someone like Peter Gabriel comes along with a Bon Iver cover, or Richard Shindell takes on Josh Ritter, and the world turns topsy turvy for a week or two. And though she's not really my cup of tea, Joan Baez has made a point in her middle age of promoting and celebrating the works of others younger than herself, from Ritter to Dave Carter. But generally, such things are the exception, not the rule. [...]

We are enjoying the Swedish summer. Meanwhile our promo box is enjoying some dubby house tunes that would make any summer twice the pleasure. First out is a recent promo drop from Nude Photo Music. Two Trains Running build around smudged out vocals and such a thick, rolling bass that will make your teeth vibrate when [...]

With the success of her seventh studio album, July Flame , Laura Veirs isn't stopping for anything - not even for her baby on the way. Well into her third trimester, the idea of initiating a second tour almost immediately after a European tour seems absolutely ridiculous, but her pregnancy didn't seem to phase her one bit when she performed at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA with the help of her three-person band, The Hall of Flames . As the third stop [...]

For those who have only heard of Northampton, Mass and have never visited, the first thing that probably comes to mind about this Western Mass small town is that it is Lesbian Town U.S.A. Yeah, okay, this is true. Northampton, or NoHo (as the locals like to call it) is home to many lesbians as it's in a state where gay marriage is legal and the town is home to Smith College, an all-girl private institution notorious for its liberal and feminist student body. On just about every corner you can pick up The Advocate or The Rainbow [...]

I figured it was time to start writing again, after i found a horse's head in my bed this morning. I suspect it was mersenne, making me "an offer i can't refuse". Since we're all caught in this folk wave, it would only be fair to write about the clash of these two very All-American traditions in music: Bluegrass and Metallica. They're similar in so many ways that it's a mixture that can't go wrong. Like Bluegrass, Metallica is all about heaven & hell, war and peace, struggles and perils of life and [...]
Today is the start of the holiday week in Istanbul and to celebrate the holiday spirit here's the second part of our 5 Star Monday series with all kinds of cheerful bluegrass, ska and world music. Club Nisei compiled by Hawaiian music preserver label Hana Ola of Hawaii's post WWII Japanese Music Scene from the 1940s. Charlie Haden track off his new album Rambling Boy where he sings country and bluegrass. Bluegrass covers of Iron Horse playing the Metallica thanks to a tip by error101. Horst Jankowski leeched off Flageolette [...]

Peace New York, let me put you on. In these times of financial downturn, everyone's looking for ways to save a few bucks here and there. Many people I know have been cutting cabs from their repertoire and have been iron horsing it round town. Now nothing can beat the MTA in terms of reliability & cost per ride, but lets face it - trains are kinda bullshit from time to time. For those in the NY metro area, Ride Amigos is here to be a affordable solution to the expensive cab problem. The website offers [...]
Welcome to a new Popwreckoning feature called "Under Cover" because we know that everybody loves to hear a good cover of their favorite songs and artists. There's no better way to kick off our cover songs feature than with Modest Mouse 's "Float On." While plenty of bands have covered this, we've narrowed it down to our favorite three covers: First up we have the "American Idol" Contestants' cover. Just kidding, we wouldn't put you through that, but we are going to feature another version that was used on the same network. [...]
