NBA Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving got together with Pepsi MAX for an interesting marketing ploy for the cola. The young melbourne native gets done up like an old man to prove the old "more than meets the eye" adage. Irving pulls off the stunt well, getting into character and schooling a couple of these 'young bloods' with relative ease. Check out the Uncle Drew video below

A year ago last week, I wrote that L.A. septet Afternoons were a good bet to release one of the finest albums of 2009 . So much for my crystal ball. Instead, the business of writing, recording and releasing new material has moved glacially (and carefully) for the band, whose operatic pop anthems grabbed L.A. by the ears in 2008. Finally, at the outset of 2010, there is news to report: The group has changed its name to Shadow Shadow Shade (no MySpace page for that moniker yet) and has nearly completed a six-song release [...]

The Mass Industry Committee ( MIC ) doesn't mind that throwing Boston music award shows is more thankless than drumming. Nor do they anguish over criticism that their first two MIC Awards played favorites. A few weeks ago, committee organizers voted to ignore naysayer player haters and announced plans for a third gala in four years. "This year we're doing more of a people's choice type of award show," according to MIC spokesman Daneja, who says the ceremony will soon return to John Hancock Hall in Back Bay with added dimensions. "This [...]

You'd think i'd break five months of silence with some yet-to-be-released, white-label, promo-only B-side REEEEEmix... No. It's a Los Angeles band that hasn't put out a record since 2006. But hey, it's new to me (discovered via Pandora of all places). Irving serve up carefree pop in a variety of flavors - thanks in part to the fact there are five songwriters in the group. My personal favorite is "I Can't Fall in Love," which I can't seem to listen to less than twice in a row. eeniemeenie.com [...]

Remember when you fell in love with John Vanderslice or the National? You'll be seduced by Sea Wolf too. "Black Dirt" begins as a folk song sang to on a stormy night, transforming halfway through into rock number performed from death. The song documents an imagined murder committed over broken promises and lies, but the song makes a promise of its own: "But my heart no longer beats My blood makes black dirt under your feet [...]

Irving are the band that Fountains of Wayne should have always been but could never quite manage. While the latter band often tends to wander far too far into mawkish territory than I may like as well as crafting some painfully bad "hits" ( Stacy's Mom comes to mind), Irving have been quietly in the background making perfect pop records. That the band is nearly ten years old and has only managed to release two full length records may offer up a clue to their obscurity. I wonder when I started calling albums records. [...]
Dear Crackheads who climbed up on the office roof to steal copper from the air conditioner so that we have no air conditioning in our office on this hot Alabama summer's day...yet you only made off with 10 dollars worth of the stuff, Thanks so much for converting our office into a sauna...and you did it for only $10! While I'm enjoying sweating out impurities in a dark office, you're probably down at Shop-a-Crack haggling with your dealer for a discount on a rock suitable in size for Tinkerbell if she were strung-out on crack instead of pixie [...]

Let's Go Sailing The sequence of events that has boosted Let's Go Sailing into popular awareness does not reflect the years of work that singer-songwriter Shana Levy has put into it. Levy studied classical piano from a very young age and began writing her own music before she was a teen. In college, lack of access to a piano forced her creative skills into poetry. Elliott Smith was her inspiration for putting the poems and music together as songs with lyrics. Levy joined Irving, a [...]

I've seen Irving open for two bands last year, Of Montreal and Rogue Wave, and both times they've received the most positive reaction I've ever seen for an opening band. It's with good reason; although the brand of retro-indie-pop they play isn't anything particularly innovative, Irving stands above the "competition" with pitch-perfect harmonies, tight, punchy melodies, and more energy than any

Here's another handful I'd been hunting awhile and have finally run to earth. At left, The Weepies in a less briny moment. The Galactic Heroes - Sum of Your Parts mp3 Irving - Situation mp3 The Village Green - [...]
