Back in December, a special concert took to stage in Los Angeles. Headlined as That 702s Soul , the show paid homage to soul greats, backed by appearances from Sly Stone, George Clinton, Shuggie Otis, Sue Jorge and more. ArtDontSleep captured the entire night by way of film, and is now ready to liberate some of the footage. The first performance to see the light of day is a fantastic cover of Isaac Hayes' "Walk On By". Backed by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson's ensemble, Zap Mama took the role of vocalist for this soul classic. The end result is [...]

Michael Jackson, 1978 1978 was a year when it was hard to find anything that came close to R&B that wasn't wrapped in polyester and smothered in a strobe light. 1979 was a bit better, though, with the debut of Prince, a classic album by Michael Jackson and the last great single by Issac Hayes making up the Top 10 R&B hits of the year. 10. Prince - "I Wanna Be Your Lover" When he showed up on his first album wearing panties and stockings, it was safe [...]

Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul Enterprise: 1969 Known to many of my age for voicing the late Chef on Comedy Central’s South Park and appearing on VH1’s I Love the ‘70s , we should remember that Isaac Hayes was one of the most talented songwriters and producers of 1960’s and 1970’s soul. 1969’s Hot Buttered Soul , his second solo album, is his most purified release, condensing the highly aromatic attitude of its artist into four, long, heavy tracks. The album, on which Hayes demanded full creative control, can [...]

L.A.'s The Decoders do an excellent lovers' rock send-up of the Bacharach/David classic. Fitz and the Tantrums' Noelle Scaggs styles Burt's great melody sweetly, preserving the smooth saccharine coo of Dionne Warwick's original vocal tone while adding her own full-bodied muscle to it. The Decoders - Walk On By (Feat. Noelle Scaggs) The Decoders ( Facebook ) Rating 8.3
Celebrating the lifetime achievements of Hal David, one of the greatest lyricists of the twentieth century.

A BIG TUNE from Toronto's Spek Won featuring a sick Isaac Hayes sample. Track is called Tryptamine and it's produced by Tone Mason.

It is a shame that so much pop consciousness of Isaac Hayes's work centers on Shaft , which reveals itself as a pretty crappy movie once you get over the initial Blaxploitation yucks. Like many of Hayes's albums, the soundtrack frustratingly mingles brilliance with filler. But, oh the brilliance! Maybe none more awesome than this slinky jam that spools out to a luxurious 20 minutes like the loverman himself stretched out in wait on the bearskin rug. Isaac Hayes - Do Your Thing
