Thank-you to everyone who came down to see Mr Julian Balme play his train-inspired dj set (playlist to follow) at The Beat! on Saturday. Here's the Glass Candy track I played - seems the sample is from Geto Boys' My Mind Playing Tricks On Me ( pick a copy up from Clone ) which in turn samples Isaac Hayes' track "Hung Up On My Baby". I know, it has been a while. I can't say it won't be a while before I'm back, so tonight I'm packing this post with music... and total fucking randomness! If you're the kind of person who doesn't mind mixing his Sinatra with his Pearl Jam and his AC/DC, this one is for you. "Shake a Leg" by AC/DC : I must have heard this song dozens of times over the years, but it never grabbed me by the throat until it popped up on my iPod shuffle a few [...]
My dude Jay just put me up on this after he spotted it on BETJ a second ago. Not sure how many sites posted this video (shot in support of the song's inclusion on the Dead Presidents soundtrack back around '95) right after the announcement of Isaac Hayes ' untimely passing a couple weekends back but it's f-cking GREAT. Black Moses, R.I.P. forever.
I know I'm a little late but I have to admit I still have Olympic fever. Maybe it's from lack of sleep. The underwhelming performance of the US track team is kind of upsetting but hey at least the Jamaicans are on fire. As a reggae fan I take solace in that and you gotta love Usain Bolt! And now I present some track inspired tracks just for you. Take your mark...RUN!!!! Isaac Hayes: Run Fay Run [...]

In one of the numerous small towns surrounding Lawrence, there is a thrift store. I go there once or twice a year, wander into the basement, and ransack their record section. It’s a small section - just about ten or twelve feet of shelving - but it yields high-quality, well-maintained, ...
Ok I'm nine days late, but to be honest, nine days ago this man wasn't really relevant to me, musically at least. I was more than familiar with his voice-acting as Chef, Chocolate Salty Balls and his (unfortunate) membership in the church of Scientology. But as news started filtering through about his death I thought I'd investigate, two albums kept on coming up in tributes to him, the Shaft Soundtrack and Hot Buttered Soul. I was already familiar with the Shaft theme tune, who isn't? So I decided to check out Hot Buttered Soul and it is [...]

Okay, first off we have this track by Bloc Party that seems to draw a definitive line between the fans. I've heard all range of complaints - "Where are the guitars?!" - but I think it's a solid track, and at the very least is leaps and bounds beyond anything they did on WITC. CSS' treatment will probably be welcome from those same fans wondering where all the guitars went - they add in a crunchy guitar that sounds like it was borrowed from MSTRKRFT's remix of 'Two More Years'. Good stuff. MP3 : Bloc [...]

Andria Lisle, looks at Memphis' incredible musical legacy in today's Guardian. As the legend goes, if you plant your pocket change on the silty banks of the lower Mississippi River, copper and silver trees will spring up overnight. Maybe that's not entirely true - but what Memphis, Tennessee lacks in monetary riches has, in musical wealth, been harvested a hundredfold. It's a great piece and especially poignant in light of Isaac Hayes' recent passing. I'd forgotten how much I loved his music till I listened to the Wattstax album again [...]
Probably going to need a little bit more than luck. MTV has four clips from the movie Soul Men , which stars the now deceased Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, along with Sam Jackson. But we won't talk about him because he stars in every other movie.

Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr. passed away yesterday after being found unconscious near a treadmill in his home in Memphis. He was 65. It would be difficult to overstate Hayes' importance to '60s and '70s music. Hayes' work with Stax/Volt Records in the mid-'60s layed the foundation for the Memphis soul sound. His hugely important solo career furthered the range of soul and R&B, and also contributed to both disco and rap. Hayes joined Stax Records in 1964, and his first gig was as a pianist for Otis Redding. As a [...]
When great music artist like Isaac Hayes pass away, I often want to note their passing in some small and respectful way here in SML, but often the words fail me. But I think that Reverend Keith A. Gordon over at About.com's blues page did a good job or honoring the late grate mister Hayes. In his profile on Isaac Hayes he states; Although known primarily as a soul artist, Hayes' influence on blues music is undeniable, and blues artists such as Freddie King, B.B. King, Rory Gallagher, Earl Hooker, Tommy Castro, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds [...]

It was a shock to everyone when the news came that legendary artist/producer Isaac Hayes died Sunday morning at his home in Memphis. Hayes was a highly influential musician and created masterpieces that will span the length of time and inspire future artists to take their own, unique path when it comes to making music. I definitely should have posted this sooner, but after listening to DJ Wonder's Isaac Hayes Tribute mix, I concluded that there was no way I could finish out the week without mentioning Hayes' passing. With this 30 minute mix that DJ Wonder put together for [...]
