Posted in General Clickable Something For The Weekend Occasionally on my recent travels, but all too seldomly, I would converse with a fellow traveler about music and they would have something more to offer than "did you know Rihanna's real name is Robyn Fenty". Through one of the more productive chats I was introduced to this band, Isbells from Belgium. A harmony rich [...]

It's New Release Tuesday, and this week's is one of the biggest days of the year, with new discs by the Foo Fighters, a reinvigorated Paul Simon and TV On The Radio leading the pack, plus a few ot... Continue reading "Out Today: Paul Simon Resurgent, Foos Get Loud, Isbell Kills" >
I got an email from one of our readers telling me about a site that flat out ripped off the entire EMPT style, I mean we're talking a straight bite here. I have no problem with people borrowing from us but completely stealing our names, concepts and vibe doesn't make any sense to me. EMPT is a complete reflection of me and my friends and I won't sit here and watch pose as us - You gotta see what I've seen, look where I've looked Touch what I've reached, and take what I've [...]

Here we are with another of the bi-weekly "Sad Bastard Sundays" from yours truly from Slowcoustic . Today, I thought I would possibly introduce you to a band from Belgium that shouldn't be overlooked. I also thought that I would try to show that just because songs are slower, mostly acoustic, enjoyed by Sad Bastards, they in fact might not be sad at all. These songs while on the mellow side of folk-pop almost feel uplifting as opposed to being the backing to your most recent break up. Please enjoy Isbells. ~~~ [...]

As a native Floridian for the first 31 years of my life, I never experienced Autumn. Yeah, it gets chilly down there in the winter and things die and stuff, but really winter is seen as more of just a break from the heat and humidity that permeates the state the other 10 months of the year. My point being... Weather-wise... I do not miss Florida in the slightest. Moving to Ohio over 6 1/2 years ago I discovered seasons. Genuine seasons. Bits of similar weather that last for about 3 months [...]

There's something in bedroom recordings that I really like. It's a fusion point of the artist with his songs, his natural surroundings, his familiar view outside of the window, and the freedom to record in the exact time it feels right for him. Isbells is essentially Belgian songwriter Gaëtan Vandewoude who played in couple of bands [...]
Belgian stereotypes are mostly culinary-centric. The dudes have got sweet, rich beer, powdered sugary waffles, and some lovely fries. And let's be honest, all of these things are great, but they don't exactly speak to sound. So-knowing that it was the work of Belgian Gaëtan Vandewoude-when I picked up Isbells ' self-titled debut with beer-drenched waffles on my mind, I didn't really know what to expect sonically. Though, I guess on a subconscious level I had a perfect hypothesis, because by some strange associative mind trick, the thing sounds exactly like powdered sugar washed down with some wheat ale-if [...]
Hey all - sorry about the silence, my last post ought to explain it. On with the show... Sexion D'Assaut - Désolé ( mp3 ) On this popped in H&M. Out came my Shazam app. Did it work? Did it fuck - the bastard just 'searched' for ages, then finally admitted its miserable, pathetic failure. I swore a lot (hard to believe, I know), sulked, and then typed in a guessed translation of the only lyric I remembered. And Safari came up trumps where Shazam failed. Well done Safari. Go fuck [...]

Well, I don't use this phrase often but the Tour de Cure turned into what can only be called a #EpicFAIL. First off, let me say thank you. Because of all of you, we raised $750 for diabetes research. THAT is pretty awesome, in my opinion, especially considering how little we pushed it this year (I just wasn't 100% that I'd be able to do it). Again, thank you! Okay, on to the disaster... I'll keep this relatively brief, as I really would like to put this behind me now. It goes a little something like this: [...]
If you're like me, you are in love with Bon Iver (Justin Vernon), and want to ask him "Hey IVER-yeah you- when's your next album coming out?!" Truthfully, it makes complete sense why it's taking so long to get a sophomore album released. Similar to Sufjan Stevens, Vernon quickly became an icon for indie music, and now has a ton of pressure riding on his flannel-covered-shoulders. It must be weird going from writing a reflective album, in complete solitude, to knowing that your next album will be critiqued by 100,000+ people (not to mention the wrath of a Pitchfork) just [...]

There's not that's gotten me out of my music blogging hibernation, but on a tip from Slowcoustic , I checked out the Belgian band Isbells ( myspace ). Their self-titled album from 2009 struck me immediately. Fairly simple acoustic songs with lush vocals, often in falsetto ala Bon Iver, dominate the album. (But I think it would be a mistake to dismiss this band as a Bon Iver knock-off.) The songs are melancholy and beautiful, filled with yearning. While the album isn't perfect-there are a couple weaker songs-and it sits as much [...]

Photo courtesy I don't think every one who visits here know this but I used to hold monthly mixtapes (Hardcore Mixtapes). But, since the whole process took a lot of time (all the sorting, ranking so forth), I resorted to weekly, shorter versions of it. Now, I'm returning with my monthly mixtapes and I'm putting in the more recent tracks of January that seemed to rise above the rest. I'm planning on changing the individual files into podcasts next month until I find a suitable podcast program for non-Mac pcs like mine. [...]

Hello hello, it's Friday Friday and man o' man another fun weekend ahead! Lots of craftin' and artsin' and cyclin' and even a little road trippin' to Cincinnatin' for a photoshoot. This time, it's Baby's turn to get in front of the lens (tech speak, sorry) and amazing photographer and model Claudia's turn to shoot! Now, I'll be there, camera(s) in tow, to shoot the shoot (did I just blow yer mind???) as 1) I want [...]
Isbells - As Long As It Takes For a sound not dissimilar to Bon Iver, there's a hint of familiarity about Isbells' back story: Belgian Gaëtan Vandewoude spends 15 years working with various rock bands before retreating to a decrepit stable where he would spend the nights recording a series of introspective songs inspired by his surroundings... before drafting in some friends and releasing a surprisingly beautiful collection of acoustic material. Official MySpace Photo by [...]

If you haven't heard Belgium's the Isbells , do so soon. Their self titled debut album is one of my favorites of the year, and "Reunite" is on my top ten of FaveSongs2009 list [check this space in the next few days to actually see the list]. I absolutely adore the original song "Reunite"; I merely wanted to add just a little bit of something to it. It's merely a.... well, it's just a subtle re-edit using only elements of the original, not anything added from the outside. [...]
