Welcome back to the second installment of the songs that rocked my world in 2012. A small re-cap for those of you who missed out on yesterday's post: without any fanfare, ranking or listing, I'm giving you the 75 songs, split into five collections of 15 songs each, that soundtracked the year for me. There will be a post a day this week from Monday to Friday (You can click back to Monday's post to get the first part) , and you can collection them all to get a pretty awesome compilation that I think is a good [...]

The Killers have posted a video for their Christmas song "I Feel It in My Bones." Proceeds from sales of the single go to (PRODUCT)RED , which benefits The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria .
This week at the IFC Center in NYC, Oscilloscope Labs presents the opening run of its latest critically acclaimed film, Only The Young . ( Get tickets here , film folk. It looks nice!) It focuses on three charming teens teetering on adulthood in an economically depressed town, and its directors (Jason Tippet and Elizbeth Mims) and producer (Derek Waters) were smart to commission original music from Nick Thorburn, whose work with Islands and Unicorns and all manner of comedians makes him particularly well qualified to spin gold from the themes of young adulthood, suburban ennui, depression, and general [...]
If you're seeing the Biebs or Aerosmith tonight, you could be on the wrong blog: ► Montreal's Islands are doing a Hurricane Sandy benefit (proceeds to the World Cares Center and the Rockaway Action Center, $20 at the door) at the Virgil. Comedy guests include Tim Heidecker, Rob Delaney and more. ► The Henry Clay People's residency — which benefits the Songs for Kids Foundation — will be recorded live all month. Helping them kick it off tonight are So Many Wizards , Steelwells and Future Ghost [...]

El-P is back once again with his new favourite collaborator, Nick Diamonds of Islands fame. Calling themselves Stepson , the duo marry melodic, almost poppy vocals with distortion, overwhelming low-end and a lurching rhythm that could only be a harbinger of doom. This new track 'Movie Tit', is unmistakably an El-P production; full of distorted electronics and leftfield studio flourishes. What marks it out is Nick Diamonds' vocals; though beautiful and melodic, they carry an undoubted eeriness that sits atop the dirge and the 8-bit bleeps perfectly. If [...]

The prolific rap god known as El-P has made serious waves in 2012 as the force behind two excellent albums and one of the best tours of the summer. . Now, he's back with a track from his collaboration with Island's Nick Thorburn, aka Nick Diamond. They call themselves Stepson, and their track "Movie Tit" features some tripped out electronics.
El-P and Islands' Nick Diamonds are no stranger to collaboration - most recently, see " Stay Down " from El's excellent Cancer For Cure , or that screengrab above from their joint stop by Letterman's place - though this is the first listen from their dedicated joint-venture Stepson. "See you at the movies" is a fine and fair lyric for a song called "Movie Tit," and it's mouthed by Nick alone; on this one, at least, El-P is solely el Producer. Hear it here: Read More...

Sum 41 is kicking off the new year with a west coast tour, and will be bringing along Hunter Valentine for the ride.

Once I listened to Rikers ' track I'm On the Radio , it drew me in. Between the catchy song and uniquely intriguing video which accompanies it, what's not to love? Typically, I don't really enjoy a ton of music on the radio, but if I heard Rikers' I'm on the Radio , there's no way I'd change the channel. Rikers' vocalist Ryan Kennedy took the time to speak to us about their debut album Islands , playing the 100th Grey Cup Celebration TONIGHT , and bands they love! AMBY: [...]
For reasons unknown, all names shall be culled from this blogaruu. Except for mine. I'm going full on narcissistic. Tropical Hayes all the way! So it's the day after Halloween. Actually, the night. Limo pulls up outside my abode. It's time. Put on my private jet pants. Grab my bag. Scuttle out. Hop in. High fives. [...]

For those who like their music nicely textured, then look no further than Volcanoes Make Islands if you haven't already. The band is not a stranger to our bandwidth as they caught our attention with their eclectic 2010 EP, Sick City , which was part noise, part dance, part folk but all rock. Next week, on Friday, November 23, to be exact, Volcanoes Make Islands are dropping a new record, Museum of Endangered Sounds , and celebrating it with a release party at Schubas . But not only that, we have the [...]
They are valley girls. They sing the blues. They're playing rock'n'roll. They sweat. They move. They groove. They walk their electric rock on all roads. Lindsey on the guitar and on the vocals, and Julie on the drums and on the vocals too. They are Deap Vally and certainly one of the best things that ever happened [...]

One of the most recent releases from the Famous Class stable has really won me over today. Of course, it does come with a bit of sadness, as the band in question, Tough Knuckles , is the one of Ariel Panero, a promoter and popular man in the NYC music scene who passed away last year. I'm pretty sure this record came to light awhile back, but FC just out up VANNAWHITE on their bandcamp for FREE , which means you need to [...]

Words: Saam Das Uni isn't all about studying. And for a lot of musically inclined students, putting a band together is high on the list of priorities. London quartet Islander comprise of students from three different universities, including two of my former places of study. (Although I guess I can't take all the credit, right?) The band's affecting tone is evocative of Bon Iver . The band came together having been part of [...]
I love Atlas Genius. I love The xx. That makes this a no-brainer for me. Keith Jeffrey (lead singer of Atlas Genius) swung through Crown City Recordings in Pasadena, CA and laid down this flawless cover. Future collaboration in the works? I'd support it. Stream/download below. .
