Albums of the Month - February 2012 There's an ounce of guilt here, never completing what I considered to be the best albums of January. Part apathy, part neglect, and part of no albums really capturing my attention, January 2012 is forgotten. But rather than tread on the mistakes, I'd rather just get back to normal and act like it never happened. So, it never did. And here are my three favorite albums from February. [...]
Santigold is out to be a trend setter in her new video for “Disparate Youth”, with her fancy floral pants. Just remember when you see pre-teens wearing them 10 months from now, You and I will know who started it. The video starts off as a nice tour of the island, untilt hings gets weird and creepy with a Jungle tribe. Song is still excellent to my ears. Master of My Make-Believe is due May 1st. Patrick Stump , best known from his time in Fall Out Boy but also known for his recent solo album, Soul Punk , has posted a lengthy blog post talking about "being a 27-year old has-been." Mostly he talks about his reluctance to perform publicly anytime in the near future. He notes: I had always been prepared for "Haters," because there's never been a moment since I graduated high school where I haven't been the guy in "That Emo band." First said emo band was dismissed as third rate pop-punk [...]

I interviewed Nick Thorburn of Islands for Exclaim! , and also reviewed the band's latest album, A Sleep & a Forgetting . Below is a music video for the single "This Is Not a Song," which is a wonderfully simple piano-based soul ballad that's probably my favourite track on the album.

Amazon Yesterday was a pretty busy one as far as festival announcements went - the first acts for this year's Pitchfork Festival , happening July 13 to 15 in Chicago's Union Park, were revealed; Sled Island made a pretty compelling argument for visiting Calgary from June 20 to 23; and though an official announcement is still a little ways off, the fact that Florence & The Machine , The Walkmen , tUnE-yArDs , Black Keys and The Shins will all be passing through during the August long weekend [...]
Just when you think Nick Thorburn has put out his last album for a while, he hits you with another. Besides collaborating with Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, The Shins) and Ryan Kattner (Honus Honus of Man Man) to create Mister Heavenly - creating the budding genre of doom wop's character album Out of Love (August 2011) - Thornburn has had his own solo project (Nick Diamonds) where he released it's debut album in July 2011. Besides that, he's been a part of lo-fi legends The Unicorns who released Unicorns are people too and Who Will Cut Our [...]

If you didn’t know the story behind A Sleep & A Forgetting , last Friday's Free At Noon show might have left you wondering, “What happened to Islands ?” The answer is that front man Nick Thorburn broke up with his long time partner, moved from New York to LA and, heartbroken, started writing the album on Valentine’s Day of last year. Released a year later, (on Valentine’s Day, appropriately) A Sleep & A Forgetting is a mellow, beach-rock handling of heartbreak and the moving-on process. And crying. Lots and lots of crying. It [...]
Lex Halaby ha diretto il video di Hallways , dal nuovo album degli Islands uscito questo mese, A Sleep & A Forgetting .

“It’s just beautiful music.” The guy next to me must have said “beautiful” at least 10 times over the course of Islands ’ set at Le Poisson Rouge, whether to his equally eager friends or over the lip of the stage to frontman Nick “Diamonds” Thorburn. As much as I wished he had thought to tuck a thesaurus in the back pocket of his skinny jeans, I had to agree. Thorburn and his very good-looking, well-dressed backing band lavished attention on their arrangements and expression that belied lyrics like, “This is not a band” and “This is not a [...]
This week, we ran into a bit of a problem as it pertains to this list: For some reason, YouTube embed aren't rendering when we put them in. We're not sure why that is, but we're looking to fix it. (And if any readers know anyone at YouTube or Google who could help us out, please do!) In the meantime, we found Vimeo embeds for four of these five videos and posted a link to the other. Islands FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24 Islands fans were shown some love on Valentine’s Day with the release of the Canadian indie-rock band’s latest full-length album, A Sleep & A Forgetting . Yet blissful romance is hardly the album’s focal point: it was written following the end of frontman Nick Thorburn’s thorny relationship. One of the album’s earlier tracks, “This Is Not A Song,” is a somber telling of the past, and is indicative of most of the album’s tone. Not much has changed, however; we’re still [...]
