THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Rival Schools w/ The Gaslight Anthem, Fake Problems Sunday, October 8 Masquerade - 695 North Avenue NE in Atlanta, GA 30308 Admission is $20 / Purchase Tickets If I were being objective, Phantogram would have this spot on lock. It's not often anymore that [...]

It's Elephant's are the lime in the malt liquor. They're the smiling faces at a funeral. Their sort of punk, sort of acid-induced rock persona transitions into a far too demanding world with a substantial frenzy. It's sort of like a jazz choir playing at CBGB's. Their sophomore release, Gets Along , beats you over the head with a rock 'n roll NERF baseball bat till you want to shoot up your nearest supermarket. This is one of the most deliberately entrancing discs that has come out in some [...]

Southern rock is and always has been a genre that I find quite appealing and relatable. I think it probably dates back to my youth growing up in a rural town in southeast Ohio. Down there country and southern rock are pretty much the only two kinds of music that you can listen to without being assaulted, or at least chastised. Obviously that is a bit of an exaggeration, but you get where I'm coming from. The only problem with southern rock is that it is often overwhelmingly formulamatic. Even the greats of the genre, acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The [...]

Atlanta, Ga.'s It's Elephant's have recently released their sophomore album "Gets Along" on June 26, which follows on the heels of their debut album "Little Trouble in Chinatown" (released in early 2008). After only a year of playing together, the band is already a hometown favorite, and has toured extensively in the southeast as well. They're on the brink of exploding nationally, their debut album garnered positive press in regional outlets that range from Paste Magazine online to Southeast Performer Magazine to University of Florida's student newspaper. Band members include Brent Jay (The Letters Organize), Garrett Range [...]

It's Elephant's were among the first publicity clients of my friend Liz at Deus Ex Machina PR , and they've really been blowing up lately. They're tons of fun live, and bring a real work ethic and sense of humor to everything they do, it seems. I got to write a spotlight on them for Southeast Performer after their first album Little Trouble In Chinatown last year, as well as edit my friend Nikki's Catching Up With... piece on them back in the Paste:Local Atlanta days. Now, I [...]
There's a program on the History Channel called "Modern Marvels." It's what they show in between the Hitler documentaries and all that footage of airplanes from WWII. Generally speaking, episodes of "Modern Marvels" focus on incredible feats of science or engineering - things like the combustion engine or the world's tallest skyscraper. It's what you would call edu-tainment ; informative enough that you might watch it in one of your GE history classes, but with the kind of sensationalized footage and booming voice overs that catch the attention of pot heads flipping through the channels late at night. [...]
