Nope. No Ivan. No Alyosha. And Seattle duo Tim Wilson and Ryan Carbury, who took their moniker from Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov, aren't even just a duo anymore. Now expanded to a foursome, Ivan and Alyosha are writing and recording the full-length followup to a pair of promising EP's, 2009's The Verse, The Chorus and the recent Fathers Be Kind, where we find the wonderfully infectious title track. As we first noted a couple of years ago, I&A peddle "gloriously hummable and inventively twisty melodies intact to stand up to the most meticulous retro [...]

I can't believe it's already that time again- and I'm just mildly envious/sad that I'm not there to be apart of it this time because last year's Invisible Children Holiday Benefit show was pretty much the highlight of my 2010. This year, the guys have totally outdone themselves with TWO nights of music back to back. Check out the lineup below. And get your tickets now because it sold out quick last year- and with a lineup that includes, MOUNTAIN GOATS, FRUIT BATS + VETIVER playing together- it's most definitely going to sell out. I'll be [...]

Ivan and Alyosha began as the project of Tim Wilson and Ryan Carbary. After recording an EP together, the group added members Tim Kim and Pete Wilson to round out the group. After the release of their much praised Fathers Be Kind EP, the group is preparing the release of their debut LP. Early buzz of the band has them gaining comparisons to Fleet Foxes and Local Natives, two bands that aren't that shabby. Check out tour dates for the band as well as them performing the track "Glorify" from Fathers Be Kind [...]

I was browsing the artists on the Pygmalion Music Festival line-up the other day and was introduced to Seattle folk duo Ivan & Alyosha (the name comes from the Dostoevsky novel, Brothers Karamazov ) and I've had their EP, Fathers Be Kind on heavy rotation ever since. If you're a fan of earnest, stunningly pretty folk songs in the vein of The Avett Brothers and Ferraby Lionheart, this will be right up your alley. The EP's closing track, "Glorify" is a great intro to the [...]
After making up the summer mix i came away craving some lyric heavy songs. Those ones that help hold the heart rather than moving the feet. This week is a slow build but it still delivers Stornoway- Fuel Up I don't know how i missed Stornoway last year but i did. I'm on such a [...]
Can you believe that the year is already half over? Yeah, neither can we. Here are our 20 favorite tracks of 2011 from January through June, featuring everything from indie rock to folk to punk and creating a narrative of what the year has been like for us so far. Amanda Palmer - In My Mind I sometimes forget how very much I adore this song, then when it comes up on my iPod, I'm in love all over again. This is a really honest self narrative that I relate [...]

Toronto - Not quite sure if this peaceful track from Seattle band Ivan & Alyosha is an ironic Christian folk song but the lyrics sure make for an interesting listen. Nice harmonics, the use of a harmonica and wicked lyrics such "Glorify the lord my son, with your whiskey and your gun" make this folk tune a lovely listen on a warm June afternoon. I can almost visualize sitting in a park, nice fruity drink in hand and watching this band sing away the afternoon. While you won't really be able to see ivan & Alyosha in [...]

May is an awkward month. May is the month which barricades itself in the bathroom and won't let anyone in. May is the month which sits between two lovers and forces a conversation. May is the month which answers the door naked to your catholic landlord. I find May irritating...mainly because of exams and the eternal itch to reach summer. Is it pretentious for me to tell you to listen to it in the order below? Perhaps, but I really would advise it... Nosaj Thing-Aquarium [...]

Seattle band, Ivan & Alyosha , are currently touring with Brandi Carlisle which is huge for them considering not many people knew about them a year ago. A few months ago they offered their latest album Fathers Be Kind on a name your price basis on bandcamp and the blogosphere exploded with kind words for them. In some songs they sound like a smaller The Head & The Heart and have that indie folk/pop sound that makes you wonder why songs like this aren't on the radio. It's music that's easy to attach [...]

The summer concert season is upon us and the Hidden Track staff knows that it's virtually impossible for us to afford every show we want to hit, and still be able to pay our insanely expensive New York City rents. Luckily for us, there are a plethora of fantastic free concerts throughout the summer that don't cost a dime. We decided to weed through all the listings and present to you our 4th Annual NYC Free Summer Concert Picks. Let's take a look… [...]

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Ivan & Alyosha 's "Fathers Be Kind" a band name taken from Dostoevsky's "Brothers Karamazov". This Seattle-based band first came to me on a monthly mixtape secret society called Porchswing . A friend of a friend from Austin that puts together some of the best music you've ever heard, whenever he gets around to it. Sorry friends, invite-only. I first heard the song "Glorify", initially I wasn't too sold on another Christian folk song, yet this one was refreshingly earnest, "Glorify the Lord above with your drink and [...]

Just came across another great music blog out there called I am Fuel, You are Friends . She is a great writer, has dyno-mite taste in music, and uncontrollably throws her readers goodie after goodie. One recent post in particular got my attention when I scrolled down the tracklist and saw a bunch of my favourites. Here is the link to the Springtime Playlist as well as the mp32s below for your listening/downloading pleasure. Free mp3: David Wax Museum - Born With a Broken Heart [...]

Meh. Sums me up right about now. I have very little left in me this evening. Just the music... Always the music. Everything is Burning is a beautiful singer-songwriter folk song, absolutely what I need this evening. Check out the rest of their new EP, Fathers Be Kind , quiet gorgeous. They create unique indie rock folk songs about family, faith, disbelief and all around life. Everything is Burning - Ivan & Alyosha Fathers [...]

I feel like I worked my balls off this week and yet, I got absolutely shit accomplished. THE MAN HAS GOT ME DOWN. I feel like I can only talk in very short sentences, which is not my style, man. So today, fuck sentences. Let's listen to some jams. Cue up the playlist, fools. We're calling this one "Beware The Dinosaurs: THEY WILL FUCK YOU UP." ** The Middle East :: Hunger Song [MP3] I tell you what, this jam is so fucking relaxing, that banjo so soothing, I [...]

For a band whose name derives from two deep characters of Dostoevsky's "Brothers Karamazov," Ivan & Alyosha 's repertoire is rather lively. Originally just a two-piece consisting of Tim Wilson and Ryan Carbary, the Seattle-based band has upped their charming folk pop-rock songs with stronger harmonies now that they have added two more members (Tim's brother, Pete, and Tim Kim). Wit and beauty from earlier songs such as "Easy to Love" on their "The Verse, The Chorus" EP persevere on the new collection of songs and even sound lighter despite sticking to some heavy themes. "Glorify" off of their [...]
