One of the more disappointing/frustrating projects of 2012 was the posthumously released J Dilla album, The Rebirth of Detroit . Everything about it felt haphazardly thrown together, and that remains a constant as we're seeing a video for one of the album's cuts. "Center of the Moment", which features Pierre Anthony and group 5 ELA, is a low-budget affair that is almost hard to watch because of its amateur-ish visuals. I understand that everyone involved most likely has their hearts in the right place with this, but I can't help but feel as if Dilla deserves more [...]
As a tribute to Big Proof on the seven year anniversary of his passing, Shady Records dug into the vaults and released this dusty gem, paying homage to maybe the [...]

On the seventh anniversary of his death, Shady Records drops off the audio to the late Proof's unreleased cut "Keep It On The Low". This particular track is extra special, considering it sports production from another Detroit legend, J Dilla . Apparently this song was recorded circa 1994, which explains the poor audio quality. Despite that, you can tell how talented both of these hip-hop artists were, and it gives us yet another reason to miss them each and every day. Stream "Keep It On The Low" below.

Check out album releases for this week. So what's out this week (April 9th) in terms of music? Well, for this week, expect new album releases from James Blake, Dawes, The Knife, Neon...

In the last year or so, there's been plenty of tributes to J Dilla : The Rebirth of Detroit compilation , Questlove's 60-minute Dilla set for Boiler Room , and, to a certain degree, posthumous releases like the Donuts 73 box set and the unreleased Anthem 123 . This April, New York record label Fat Beats will offer up their own homage to the late producer in the form of Lost Tapes, Reels + More . The compilation features 20 selections [...]

As we previously reported, another posthumous J Dilla album is on the way titled Lost Tapes . It's not set to drop until April 10, but the label behind the release, Mahogani, has uploaded some snippets as a preview. For those who are skeptical, you can rest assured that, at the very least, the music should be fantastic. I mean, I'm saying that based on listening to like three minutes of an entire album, but it's difficult to not feel excited after hearing these clips. That joint with the Guru sample? Oof. [...]

Slum Village is back with a new single "Forever," from their upcoming Evolution album dropping in June. World Tour Dates coming soon...
I had been increasingly frustrated with ill-fitting spot I used to stash my LPs. The only record rack I liked online was $168, which is pretty steep for me, since I'm a writer earning writerly wages. All the other options were dingy wire contraptions. Milk crates is one irrevocable step into hipsterdom I'm not especially eager to make. So I spent most of my day off driving around - to thrift stores, to Best Buy, to Target - trying to see if anywhere else sold something that would work. They do not. Also, fun fact, [...]

Yesterday, Fuse ran the newest and most-welcome addition to the site's Crate Diggers series, focusing on Detroit legend J Dilla . His mother Maureen Yancy, his brother John ( Illa J ), and J. Rocc are among the featured guests on the documentary, which takes a look at Dilla's early habits and broad-based tastes. It's a fun look at the increasingly beloved producer and gives fans a new perspective at the mind that was. Check it out below.

It has been some time since we have heard some new solo heat from Detroit emcee Black Milk . Breaking his silence today, he drops a new lead single titled "Sunday's Best, Monday's Worst". It has been almost 3 years since Milk's last solo effort Album of the Year and with his latest track, he takes listeners to church. JDilla 's disciple combines two songs as one continuous piece of dope music. The first part "Sunday's best" is a gospel-laced with an underground appeal and the second part "Monday's Best" brings the reverse, soulful tune that tells a sombre story. [...]

Last year saw the release of Dillatroit , an under-the-radar posthumous vinyl album that was put out under the moniker Dilla Dog. The label that put that out, Mahogani, now has plans of liberating J Dilla 's Lost Tapes . The label is fronted by Moodymann, a Detroit house musician who apparently had a connection with Dilla back in the day. [ via ] The details are blurry right now, but the Lost Tapes have a release date set for April 10. It is also unclear as to what these tracks are going [...]
