On Feb. 5, the Yancey Media Group and Delicious Vinyl teamed up to give one of J Dilla 's previously rare projects, 48 Hours with Frank-N-Dank, a proper release. As the story goes, the album fell through the hands of numerous folks at MCA and Dilla changed the production to sample-free beats when they were all 80 percent done. This newly released version is the " 48 Hours that we (Frank N Dank & Dilla) turned in to MCA and the way Dilla intended it to be,” according to Frank Nitt. We were given [...]
I've written more than my fair share of tepid reviews. I'm therefore unable to object to the lukewarm response a critic for The Washington Post gave to a Vinson Cole recital two months ago. Yet the famed vocalist's performance for an audience of about fifty at White Recital Hall on Sunday was as dazzling as anything I've heard in recent months. Cole's affecting renditions of John Musto's "Litany" and Margaret Bond's "Minstrel Man" during a free concert titled A Celebration of the Poetry of [...]
Earlier this month , Brighton producer Kutmah offered up a tribute to the late-great and frequently mentioned J Dilla on the sixth anniversary of his death. While NTS fans may have seen several other tribute mixes added to the collection, they kinda fell under the wire here. And while the anniversary may have passed, anytime we have an opportunity to celebrate Dilla is a good time. Stream Kutmah's two additional Dilla tribute mixes below.
I didn't grow up with the luxury of having someone near and dear to me who could properly school me on hip-hop. Sure, my older brother, Tim, had great music taste and introduced me to stuff like The Chronic in 1993, which confused the hell out of my 8-year-old self. "What is chronic?" I can remember asking him, only to receive a shrugged-shoulders response and probably a lil' punch in the arm. But when I heard the music, the beats, the mostly indecipherable (to a kid, at least) lyrics, I was hooked. You could say that Dre introduced me to [...]
Today is the end of an era. It’s been a year since we posted the first episode of Bling47 Breaks. We never could have expected the response it has gotten. After many late night Sunday edits we bring it to a close for greater pastures. We now enter the era of all things DIRT. Visit us and subscribe to our Facebook HERE. We’ like to thank all those we begged borrowed and stole from to make this year possible. Much love. Jeedo http://bling47.com/site/jeedo- tomita-finale/
Winding through to the end of Dilla Month i only thought it would be appropriate to blog this mix i put up about two weeks back. This is the first in a three part series of mixes I will be doing to say thanks to easily one of the most talented and forward thinking minds period. Jay Dee single handily changed the way I and I’m sure countless others listen to hip hop and music in general. I was a late appreciator of this man’s genius and after giving myself the time to properly digest alot of Dilla’s [...]
Since 2006, the shortest month of the year gained another layer of significance. February holds, in its scant 28 days, James Yancey's birthday and the day he left this realm. There are no shortage of words on the Internet to describe Jay Dee aka J Dilla's mastery, influence and importance in modern music. I won't go into that here. Instead I'll just share the trite meme that's spread across the globe in seven short years: he changed my life. I wouldn't have met important people in my life or had important experiences if it were not for the legacy of a [...]
One of the dirtiest music-related words of all time has to be "posthumous." Whenever we see this term attached to a press release, we are filled with equal parts optimism and pessimism. Too often, it's like seeing the glass half full, only watch it get poured out completely, realize it's actually gasoline, and then get lit on fire. It is, of course, foolish to question "WHY?!" these post-death albums come to fruition—money, duh—but somehow through all the bullshit, we still find ourselves hopeful for certain projects. Perhaps it's because the few that have worked are actually pretty damn [...]
The other night, here in Milwaukee, a few of my homies; Dj Bizzon & Jank 1 held a J Dilla tribute event in order to raise money for the J Dilla foundation. Plus, just to out right celebrate the great music that J Dilla is known for… I was asked if I would like to participate in this event awhile ago. I really couldn't refuse considering the fact that I love everything Dilla… I thought it would be dope if I got the homie Mammyth to remix the Dilla beats I chose to rhyme over. [...]
It is still February, which means we are going to continue to celebrate the life of J Dilla . To keep the tribute going, today we have compiled our list of favorite Jay Dee remixes. Throughout his career, the Detroit producer found himself taking on tracks from artists both well-known and considerably under the radar. Not only that, but he created remixes for acts from across the genresphere, including hip-hop, of course, but also trip-hop, R&B and jazz. Dilla's ability to re-imagine an arrangement was undeniable, and it's through this that we have him to thank for introducing us [...]

It features everything from Slum Village jams to solo work to some of Dilla's best beats for other artists. Yeah, this is without a doubt the best way to end the weekend right here. Suite For Dilla by DJ J-Rell "After countless rotation of Miguel's "Timeless: Suite For Ma Dukes" project, I always visioned how it'd be if Dilla was able to perform his creations w/ a 60 piece orchestra [similar to a MTV Unplugged]. Once I get an idea I won't stop thinking about it til I bring it to fruition. So I share w/ ya'll something I've created a couple months ago & felt it was only right I allow Dilla fans & music lovers alike to embrace the result w/ me...Enjoy"
We are very proud to bring you our first release with noted Philadelphia producer Swarvy , who most recently appeared on our Sam Cooke tribute project . The rising beatmaker's solo output continues to evolve in new and intriguing directions. Last year, he dropped one of our favorite instrumental projects in Trillian , completely overhauled Danny Brown's " Blunt After Blunt ", and showcased an extremely promising collaborative project with fellow Philly artist Suzi Analogue . And today, his discography enters a beyond-syrupy realm with milkmade , a mixtape of "poached" remixes [...]
