Well, there you have it. This is probably the last of my series on the "original" version of Gram Parsons' songs. This installment focuses on Gram's solo albums. The first three songs (1-3) were covered on Gram's first solo LP, GP , released in 1972. The next three (4-6) were covered on his second solo LP, Grievous Angel , released posthumously in 1974. Songs 7-9 are the original verions of songs Gram and Emmylou recorded as outakes from the Grievous Angel sessions (available on various compilations, [...]

" Serves you right to suffer baby. Serves you right. You gonna live alone. " Is J. Geils Band "live" Full House the greatest live rock album of all time? For me that'd be a two-way tie...maybe three-way. The tie is with the live side of ZZ Top's Fandango. So, tie and a half maybe. But why J.Geils Full House? What's the big deal? About all I can say is you have to hear it. It's made loud to be played loud. The band is as tight as if they [...]
The Allmusic Blog made my day by posting about Peter Wolf's Lights Out , the 1983 solo debut by the former lead singer of the J. Geils band that is now out of print. I never bought the album back in the day—times were tight, thanks to my $5-a-week allowance—but Tim Sendra's description of it as "soul music for a soulless time" and comparisons between Wolf's attempts to rap and Debbie Harry's run at MCing on "Rapture" are more than a little intriguing. Plus, the dorkily muscular title track soundtracked one of my favorite videos on [...]

Following nearly fifteen years of major commercial success despite being an enormously popular live draw, the J. Geils Band broke through in a major way with the release of their album Freeze-Frame in late 1981. By tempering their blues and R&B-based sound in a more pop-friendly direction, the group saw the album and lead single Centerfold become #1 smashes, as well as subsequent singles Freeze-Frame and Angel In Blue become US Top 40 hits. However, at the height of the success, tensions between lead singer Peter Wolf and primary songwriter [...]
Boston's J. Geils Band already had a lengthy resume to their credits by the time the calender turned on the '80s. Their potent mix of blues-based rock and R&B had made the band a popular live draw throughout the '70s, but ten albums since their formation in 1967 had produced only a handful of US Top 40 hits, none of them reaching the Top Ten. However, beginning with 1980's Love Stinks album, the J. Geils Band, led by singer Peter Wolf, began to temper their sound with a more pop-friendly feel. The first single from [...]

I thought about posting a super awesome mix for my first "music" post but jesus christ, it's FRIDAY! How about a CHPPD / SCWDD version of Freeze Frame instead? FREEZEFRM (Chopped / Screwed by NSFW) - The J. Geils Band
I spent a decent-sized chunk of my pre-adolescence at the local Boys' Club, which is odd considering how much I loathed the place. I lay that paradox at the feet of peer pressure from my friends and the irresistible force generated by the mother of all childhood horrors, the cluelessly proactive parent. "It will be good for you," they say as they pack you into the family sedan or set a slab of cooked liver in front of you, and no amount of whining or passive-aggressive manipulation can save you from your assigned date with destiny. Also, the club was [...]

Today in Music History: In 1986, Queen gave what would be their last ever live performance when they appeared at Knebworth Festival. This weekend on August 12 is Vinyl Record Day . I've been asked to participate in a blogswarm about the event, to write about any thoughts, memories or the love/hate relationship I have with vinyl. Jb over at The Hits Just Keep on Comin' is the one who has organized this whole deal and if you head over there [...]
A friend of mine stumbled on to some very cool Joni Mitchell and Johnny Cash videos A must see.... Joni Mitchell/Johnny Cash - "Long Black Veil" from early 70's appearance on the Johnny Cash show. Joni Anderson (Mitchell), Dave Van Ronk & The Chapin Family (w/ Tom and Harry) from a Canadian hootenany show from 1965 called "Let's Sing Out." Freak folk indeed. Greetings to everyone surfing over from Jefito today - welcome and please, pull up a seat. Seriously, you're gonna wanna sit down for this one. And don't judge me. We've talked about the unfortunate final fate of The J. Geils Band here before , but there's an additional little footnote to add to the story. After ...Odd's resounding belly flop, the group was tapped to contribute the theme to the classic '80s vampire-fest Fright Night . "Fright Night" the song [...]
This one's for my Baby Chutney on this Valentine's Day. I love you, Chut Chut! Okay, now that the rest of you have finished vomiting in your mouth a little bit..."Love" was Aztec Camera's third full-length album and the first to be completely centered around songwriter Roddy Frame, since he ditched all the other band members to work with mostly American studio musos in an attempt to finally break the U.S. market. Out was the folksy, acoustic strumming and in were the electric guitars, horn section [...]
Remember that crazy white band Was (Not Was) from the '80s? With those busted Ray Bans and Sammy Hagar hair? Don Was, the dude with the nappy hair, happened to be one of the illest producers around. Now, those of you who are not from Detroit and still remember that unfortunate dinosaur jam, stay with me here. Not only did Don go on to become a Grammy-winning producer in the '90s, his early '80s work produced some of the funkiest joints this side of Nile Rodgers. In fact, he took an old broken-down Sonny & Cher song, flipped [...]
