For those that may have missed the season finale of Saturday Night Live , the show was notable for several reasons. It was the fifth time Ben Affleck, now an Oscar-winning director, hosted, and Kanye West performed some insane new material from his upcoming Yeezus album. But, at least for myself, what ended up stealing the show was the delightful and heartfelt send-off the two of the show's biggest names - Bill Hader and Fred Armisen. The former saw the epic finale of his beloved [...]

by Bill Pearis Fred Armisen & friends / Stefon & Seth / Kanye & Ben on SNL Even without Kanye 's musical appearance , last night's Ben Afleck hosted Saturday Night Live season finale was especially eventful (and teary) as it was the final show for three long-running star players: Bill Hader, Fred Armisen and Jason Sudekis . Fred got his farewell moment via a [...]
It seems Fred Armisen is leaving Saturday Night Live . In addition to two epic Kanye West performances , last night's episode also featured a super-group of indie rock stars joining Armisen on stage for what appeared to be a send-off. Armisen (who hasn't officially announced he's leaving SNL) played his rock band character Ian Rubbish, leading a band featuring two other departing SNL staffers Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis, as well as Armisen's friends Carrie Brownstein, Kim Gordon, J Mascis, Aimee Man, and Steve Jones. Watch them all play "I've Had A Lovely Night" below. [...]

Last night marked the season finale of Saturday Night Live and the final episode for several veteran cast members. Though he has yet to formally announce he's leaving the show, Fred Armisen all but confirmed his departure with an epic, heartwarming musical send-off during the final moments of tonight's episode. Armisen's punk rock alter-ego Ian Rubbish led a star-studded performance of "I've Had a Lovely Night" featuring fellow cast members Bill Hader (who's already announced his departure from the show) and Jason Sudeikis (who's also "probably" leaving), along with Armisen's longtime friends and collaborations Sleater-Kinney/Wild [...]

Today we flash back on another of our favourite labels: SUB POP RECORDS . They're responsible for the careers of a diverse range of bands, from Nirvana to Dum Dum Girls to our very own Husky . And they're celebrating 25 years in the business on July 13. That means that they've been around since 1988. Before that founder Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop about American independent artists and their labels. He started releasing compilations [...]

Here to introduce the bands, some of Sub Pop's elder statesmen: In case you hear it all over the din of industry and construction, these are just some of the bands you'll be able [...]

The compilation The Music Is You: A Tribute to John Denver sees an official release today and features artists including Sharon Van Etten, J Mascis, Evan Dando, Lucinda Williams, Josh Ritter, Emmylou Harris and many more reinterpreting some of the pop icon's classic tunes. First J Mascis put a pretty stupefied spin on Phoenix' Entertainment, and now the buck stops with Dev Hynes, aka Lightspeed Champion, aka Blood Orange who, in a bizarre twist of fate, has roped in dejected onetime Sugababes Mutya Keisha Siobhan to chip in some almost unfeasibly impeccable pop harmonies on what aurally resembles a cut and paste patchwork quilt of contemporary musical culture. From the princely Purple Rain guitar solo the middle eight comes showered in, to the humid R'n'B rhythmic agitation, the primordial Balearic mating calls à la Crystal Fighters as the [...]

The distinction between remix and rework is rendered that bit more blurry daily, yet there's a transparent brilliance to Dinosaur Jr.'s radical redux of Phoenix' Entertainment. It once sounded thus – an ebullient, '80s-indebted pop stomp – and yet the perennially despondent J Mascis has deftly managed to transmogrify the lead single from forthcoming fifth Bankrupt! into a morose sophomore slump of a thing that sounds lonely, jealous of the effervescence fizzing forth from its point of origin and, ultimately, stoned. No surprises there then, though this exhaustive rework is unforeseen in the [...]
J. Mascis and Sharon Van Etten honor John Denver. John Denver is receiving a new tribute via ATO Records. The label will release, The Music Is You, a new compilation album of covers...
How many times have you found yourself thinking that very same thing this afternoon then, eh? Can you even count them on the one hand? If you're struggling to truck on into the weekend, then we've a rather apposite one to throw on and haul you through: the conjoining of the respective creative forces of Dinosaur Jr. main man J Mascis and the ever resplendent Sharon Van Etten , the collaboration is to my mind – and indeed my ears, as it just so transpires – something of a dream realised. In fact, I'd go so far as to [...]

Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis teamed up with Sharon Van Etten to cover John Denver's "Prisoners." It will appear on the tribute album to Denver, The Music Is You , out April 2 via ATO . You can hear their cover over at Pitchfork .
