![Review: Dinosaur Jr. Bug Live at 9:30 Club, In The Hands Of The Fans [DVD]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4131741_lg.jpg)
At least as far as this DVD goes, you can judge the contents by the cover: herein legendary indie rock trio Dinosaur Jr. performs the third album recorded by its original line-up. The proceedings feel a little rote at times, but it's all there, and, damn, is it good. This performance of Bug was one of many the band executed in 2011, and this particular show was captured to video in late June (here's DCist's review ). From a cinematographic standpoint, the concept of the DVD -- that six Dinosaur Jr. fans were [...]

you ever have a week where you not sure if youre coming or going? my last, actually, two weeks have been like that. i have had serious doubts about this site, and really the never ending onslaught of bullshit pr emails who want the world but offer nothing in exchange, and a host of other things almost caused me to walk away from my beloved captains dead. shit, i even started a new site which is just like captains dead, but of course not. i have been working on this for almost 7 years, and it was really a struggle [...]

If you've ever pondered what Dinosaur Jr. songs might sound like if they were synth-pop songs, then on April 21st, your though process can be fully complete, as that dream will come to light. In a quite inventive way of looking back and remembering his time in Dinosaur Jr., J. Mascis will release an album that will consist of nine different Dinosaur Jr. tracks reworked, with the help of Built To Spill's Brett Nelson, all in a synth-pop style. Come April 21st (which is also Record Store Day), a limited edition (of 500) purple vinyl of the [...]

Dinosaur Jr. have reissued their back catalog and made a tonne of fans very happy by touring full abum sets but J Mascis is now changing direction with a project alongside Built to Spill bassist, Brett Nelson. The Electronic Anthology Project is looking to release a synth record full of Dinosaur Jr. covers which will be released as a limited pressing of 500 on purple vinyl. Today you can see what the project sounds like in the shape of the "Tarpit" cover below which originally featured on the 1987 album, You're Living All Over Me, [...]

Bizarro world continues to expand , this time it involves J Mascis and Built to Spill bassist Brett Nelson's Electronic Anthology Project. As Pitchfork reports , the two are currently working together to rework past Dinosaur Jr. anthems into synth-pop tracks. Try and swallow that one for a second...okay, let's continue. Due out Record Store Day (ahem, April 21st), the nine-track project will receive a limited-edition run of 500 purple vinyl records, to be followed with a proper digital, CD, and vinyl release later. For a first taste of the mayhem, head [...]

The J. Mascis bobblehead, available now . $20 seems like a ridiculous bargain.
J Mascis recording electro-pop takes of old material with Built to Spill.
Here are 50 songs that defined 2011 for me. Listen. Enjoy. Tell me what you think. And yep, that's my ugly mug on the cover. Given and Taken in Ink's Top 50 Songs of 2011 from gtimusic on 8tracks . Here's the playlist: 1. Wilco - One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend) 2. City Reign - Anywhere Anyway 3. The Mountain Goats - Never Quite Free 4. Zaac Pick - Whitewater 5. Yuck - Holing Out [...]

On Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson's inaugural release as the Electronic Anthology Project , the Built to Spill duo took on music by their own band, re-recording popular BTS tunes in an '80s electro-pop style. The result was both an oddly appealing experiment and entertaining way to deconstruct the guitar-driven work for which they're better known. Now EAP is back with perhaps the best indie-rock guitarist ever in tow: J Mascis and Nelson have teamed up to electrify the Dinosaur Jr. catalog with Mascis providing lead vocals on a new set due out April 21 for Record Store Day. [...]
Last weekend, Backstage Rider 's Mikala Taylor hit the high seas for five days of distortion. She returned safely and unscathed, though we can't speak for her ears. We're pretty sure she had a blast, nonetheless, but we'll let the photos do the talking. We're not sure when, exactly, the full surrealism of being on a boat sailing from Miami to Mexico as part of The Weezer Cruise actually hit. Was it when Weezer played "Hash Pipe" shortly after the ship's horns sounded and we left Vice City? Or was it [...]

6. several shades of why j mascis sub pop, march 15, 2011 "several shades of why" i hadn't listened to j mascis since the mid-90s, with dinosaur jr., and so it was a surprise to hear him turn up again on my radar nearly twenty years later. it was even more of a surprise to see him now, a little heavier and hair all grey. but, in some [...]
Did you love seeing Dinosaur Jr. play Bug live in 2011? Or maybe you missed it, and now you're kicking yourself-literally? Maybe you're doing crazed yoga moves while wearing metal cleats so that you can really pound the spiky soles directly into your own eye sockets again and again, each time hoping that this bloodied kick might be the one to flood your body with enough pain to extinguish the burning RAGE you feel at yourself for missing the ultimate band reunion experience of your lifetime? [...]
Nerd culture collides again for Aggronautix's new bobblehead , facsimile of J. Mascis. There is some precedent for this. But they're thinking big this time. J is accurately sculpted right down to the big ole glasses, rockin' riff grip, and signature silver mane that features REAL DOLL HAIR - a first for Aggronautix! Barriers are being broken here, people. I would still rather have any of these , honestly (#16 is the best).

I bought this on CD back in 1995 after seeing a live performance of Mike Watt featuring Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl performing "Big Train" on John Stewart's late night show . Remember that show? Ball-Hog Or Tugboat? is anything but consistent as its detractors will undoubtedly raise as it's main flaw. Yes, it's Mike Watt showcasing his incredible cast of musical friends. But, you can't argue with songs like Piss-Bottle Man (featuring vocals by Evan Dando), Chinese Firedrill (featuring vocals by Frank Black), [...]
Here are my obtuse meanderings vis-a-vis the best records of the year. Please forgive my inanity. 11. Let's Wrestle – Nursing Home Nouveau '90s rock was to 2011 what dance punk revivalism was to 2001. And of all the bands channeling classic slackercore this year, Let's Wrestle did it the best. 10. Russian Circles – Empros I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of instrumental rock — particularly metal. After all, it usually involves more noodling than a Pauls [...]

I've been thinking a lot about the list-making process. Someone recently asked me: What is the purpose of making a list? My initial reaction - because it's fun - is actually somewhat shallow. Is it really? Yeah, probably...somewhat...maybe? But if so, still: Why? In listening to me think out loud about this, my wife commented that she doesn't make lists for fun. Why, then? "To keep myself sane. To make sure I don't forget things I need to do." In other words: To make order out of chaos. To provide structure to an unstructured world. As [...]

I guess I lose what little blogger cred that I have if I don't post an end-of-the-year "Best Of" list before 2012. I'm getting it in just under the wire. These are my favorite albums on this day, the 31st of December, in the year of our lord 2011, and it is subject to change whenever I feel like it. Seriously, it's been a great year for music, and it was really difficult for me to make this list. Feel free to heap praise on me or call me a pretentious overbearing wretch. [...]
