The new Aquarium Drunkard/Autumn Tone HQ is now located in downtown L.A., on the office side of Little Radio's operations, aptly entitled, SPACES. Being that it is a converted warehouse, the digs can get (yes, even in Los Angeles) chilly from time to time, but that's where J. Tillman's upcoming album, Vacilando Territory Blues, comes [...]
Not much else to say really. Well, except it features Bill Patton and a slew of other musicians. [ MP3 ]:: Steel on Steel web site

" In Spanish there is a word for which I can't find a counterword in English. It is the verb vacilar, present participle " vacilando "...If one is vacilando, he is going somewhere, but does not greatly care whether or not he gets there, although he has direction ."-- John Steinbeck j. tillman It's been a while since we heard from J. Tillman , but he's back with the soon-to-be-released (we think) Vacilando Territory Blues [...]
1. Via Audio - Enunciation - I'm fairly sure there are multiple points in this song where you'll think you know where it's going. Then, 10 seconds later, you're wrong. But you're not upset about it; you revel in it. You listen to it on repeat. [from Say Something... | buy ] 2. The Basics - Baby, Let Me In - Wally De Backer (Gotye) has those golden pipes and the rest of this Australian 3-piece has the '60s groove down pat. [...]

Undertow Music has issued J. Tillman's "Minor Works" for the first time in the U.S. "Minor Works" is Tillman's first proper studio record and was released in Europe in October 2006 by the French label Fargo Records . "Minor Works" is at it's essence, 9 beautifully stark soul-baring tracks. With a vocal style reminiscent of Ray LaMontagne, Tillman crafted a "Harvest" era collection of touching ballads. The record maintains its minimalist feel despite a full backing band featuring pedal steel guitars and strings, which is a true testament to the power of Tillman's musical [...]

Anything with a title that long must be note worthy. It's no secret herohill is card carrying members of the J Tillman fan club, so it's with great pleasure we can tell you that Undertow Music is helping J release Minor Works on this side of the pond . Minor Works was J's first attempt to record his songs with a backing band and the results are fantastic. Although our review was far too brief, the sentiments still hold true: His songs are soft, soothing, and melancholic, highlighted by his weary, hushed voice. Dripping with [...]

I was going to feature East Van's Bison here this morning, as they've owned the city lately and their heavy riffage sums up my anger over last night's Steeler loss, but I'll go with something a bit more shake the cobweb friendly. Two-Minute Miracles are one of the most ear pleasing acts in Canada and if they were a bit more prolific, they'd be huge. Led by the frontman with the best beards in rock n' roll ( J. Andrew Magoffin ), Two-Minute Miracles write songs that bore into your head and one [...]

For my top 10 albums, I'm judging the albums as a whole, not just by a couple of songs that might be my favorites. I'm considering not just how good the artist was, in my humble opinion, but how well the album worked as a unit. That is where In Rainbows failed in my judgment, although musically I liked all of my top three albums nearly equally. In Rainbows seemed like a crazy quilt of songs not having much connection to each other and rather patched together, while both The Shepherd's Dog [...]

Josh Tillman started his set off Monday night at the Glass House with an apology of sorts. After the better-than-decent but ill-matched opening band The Color Turning seared everyone's eardrums with their high-energy rock, the stage was stripped of every piece of musical technology and equipment, and Tillman came on with only his voice and sparing acoustic guitar to fill the cavernous little hall. This crowd, however, primed for whatever former Pedro and the Lion frontman David Bazan would bring, were extremely courteous and open to the difference. Even though most of [...]
I first heard Seattleite and former Saxon Shore J Tillman ( myspace ) almost two years ago now, but he's a hard time to track down, given that most of his recordings were only available through Sonic Boom and that he didn't seem to tour much, if at all. That wouldn't be much of a problem except for the fact that he makes fantastic music. Good news, though: Undertow will rerelease/ distribute Minor Works in January so it should actually be widely available. That album [...]

" With the first gray light he rose and left the boy sleeping and walked out to the road and squatted and studied the country to the south. Barren, silent, godless. He thought the month was October but he wasnt sure. He hadnt kept a calendar for years. They were moving south. There'd be no surviving another winter here ." -- from Cormac McCarthy 's The Road photo by douglas roesch [...]

Ok. The last installment. It's my favorite records. Read the my part carefully, so if you disagree because I don't like Beirut or Justice , well we have some freshly combed sand to pound. I kid. I kid. But seriously, this list isn't the "best" records, it's the ones that affected me the most. 10.) J Tillman - Cancer & Delirium - review "Tillman is not afraid to offer himself up on every track. He doesn't hide his feelings behind solos, bridges, instruments, or even harmonies. He's able [...]

This was incredibly tough to put together considering all the great music that came out this year. Each song is from one of my 13 favorite albums of 2007, and the songs go in descending order from 13 to 1 (effectively ranking the albums). I had to leave off a lot of albums that I really enjoyed: Great Lake Swimmers' Ongiara , Rocky Votolato's The Brag & Cuss , The Twilight Sad's Fourteen Autumns , Band of Horses' Cease to Begin , Iron & Wine's Shepherd's Dog , Modest [...]

J. Tillman ( MySpace ) has been compared to the likes of Nick Drake, Ray Lamontagne and Ryan Adams for his stripped down bare-your-soul songs. Strong comparisons indeed, but one listen to his 2006 debut on Yer Bird Records and you will understand. Any album named Cancer and Delirium carries with it a certain weight. And as you would surmise from the title, the songs are stark, bleak and absolutely beautiful both musically and lyrically. If you are looking for a sunny, top-down, wind-in-your-hair record, look elsewhere, but if [...]
Many many moons ago my fellow blog mate Geordie sent me a few tracks from Tillman's "Minor Works" album and I fell right in love before the 1st track was over. After that I searched out just about anything this man recorded and could get my hands on.... I Will Return, Long May You Run, Documented (2006 Tour EP), Cancer and Delirium (his most recent)...readers, if there is any other J. Tillman CDs out there that I have not listed, please do inform me! Id even go as far as saying "Minor Work" [...]

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): Aimee Mann - Calling on Mary (mp3) [...]

Part 4 of our 7 part series... Thursday: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS) – Grissom is another of the introverted, tortured genius, and dark and mysterious protagonists who dominate my season passes. "CSI" has stayed true to its formula since its early days. Fans of the show enjoy the wide spectrum of characters and their quirks, in addition to the high-tech (and sometimes imagined) crime scene tools. Neil Young - [...]

the horse latitudes are looking for a new home at the moment; a real, four solid walls and well appointed roof terrace type home. when we do find it however hopefully the moving process won't be quite as traumatic as swapping servers (i'm not sure jak could cope with that). and while the all new hl towers's precise location and number of bedrooms has yet to be decided the fact that we're moving out of familiar digs into some place is becoming more real by the second. when horse latitudes moved virtual house late last month [...]
