You had to think I would have this as a song of the day, come on. J. Tillman treads only on paths made of flower petals and breathes in only perfumed scented air in the minds of the Slowcoustic crew. Nuff said. The song is "Three Sisters" and it is the opening track from his upcoming Singing Ax album on Western Vinyl. The album is spectacular as a J. Tillman album would be. In fact upon first hearing the album, Three Sisters immediately stuck out as the feature track and may be the one that sticks in my [...]

Fleet Foxes' drummer J. Tillman is no stranger to the music scene and with the upcoming release of his 7th full-length record and the announcement of his upcoming tour with Phosphorescent he proves he knows more than a thing or two about his craft. The first single off Singing Ax , Three Sisters is slow and steady, but manages not to bore. One of the few tracks on the album that features accompaniment, Three Sisters features the deep, emotional vocals of Tillman backed by a mellotron and drum [...]

On Wednesday, July 28th at Bottom of the Hill , J. Tillman sat alone onstage with his guitar and a cymbal (that went almost completely unused). The crowd was so enraptured they were silent. The only thing you heard besides him was beer being poured. Tillman played almost exclusively new songs, for which he apologized. In-between songs he was like a folky stand-up. He had the audience in stitches, and was making the ladies swoon. The girls behind me wanted to jump his flannel. The new songs were good, but didn't take the [...]

Pearly Gate Music, essentially just Zach Tillman with help from a few others, including his brother Josh (aka J. Tillman), has just put out one of the finer debuts of the year. And while its sound is not easy to label, it is certainly easy to enjoy. On first listen I was immediately reminded of Elvis Perkins, another songwriter with unique ideas and a lo-fi aura. What really stands out is the album's spontaneity and authenticity. It feels as if it was created on the fly in the studio. Some of my favorite tracks include The Big Escape, [...]
The Buzz Box is your weekly sniff-test for tracks that have been garnering attention on the blogosphere. This week we hear a new track from prolific indie favorite Deerhunter as well as the first single from Ra Ra Riot's new album, The Orchard . Also featured are two rising acts that we've been loving over here at BCB, Beat Connection and Wise Blood (see Brandon's interview with Wise Blood below ). Co-starring in this week's box are J. Tillman (from Fleet Foxes), SLEEP ∞ OVER and Delorean. Enjoy. Deerhunter :: [...]
The debut seven song EP from mysterious lo-fi band Guards dropped in its mastered form on July 21st via Bandcamp . Other than a series of tweets from fellow 60s revivalists CULTS (who feature on one of the tracks), very little is known about the band. Perhaps the trend of having an unsearchable one word band name and making surfer garage punk is an increasing trend, which sees Guards join Tennis as the latest bands to sprout up out of nowhere to possess an immeasurable internet following. The music is screeching garage punk (with sound not far [...]

Last year, J Tillman broke my heart when I heard him play at the Horseshoe in an electrified spiritual performance, it felt as though the room stood still in silence to watch him in a Jesus like trance, he must've drew us all to tears. I will only put on J Tillman if I'm feeling introspective or sad, and in no other time. His music is ethereal, the kind of music that shakes your bones and wakes you up from a dullness that will grow if you don't keep your heart in check. J Tillman's 7th [...]

The emotional experience of music is hard to describe. Whether you're riding high in accomplishment or can't get out of bed, there is often music to accompany it and music that you couldn't handle hearing. There are probably songs that you associate with a certain person or event that you can't even listen to anymore, like a fossil of an emotion once felt that comes to life when the song plays. And then there are days, like on Tuesday in West Hollywood, when I just know that a bunch of sad s0ngs are not what my mood was good for, [...]
Between all the festival hubbub of last week, and the growing excitement for next week , you may find yourselves in an odd position. You're exhausted from the recent festivals, but there's still one more giant to tackle: Lollapalooza. Now, I'm no doctor, but I can prescribe Friday Mixtapes by the handful. Included in each are the top singles, covers, and remixes plus songs from up-and-comers you just might want to check out. While listening you'll find yourself relaxed enough to recover from the past week, as well as excited to get back out there into the [...]

Let's be honest here, J. Tillman has been doing his solo thing for a lot longer than he really became famous as the drummer for Fleet Foxes. The guy already has 6 solo albums and is now about to put out his 7th, Singing Axe, on Western Vinyl on September 14th. That's pretty prolific if you're asking me. You'll only be able to pick up that new one on vinyl or digital download, so that means no CDs you people that are living in 2002. Below you'll find the first single from the upcoming [...]

On August 24 !!! - pronounced Chk Chk Chk for those who want to Google them - will release their fourth studio album and first in three years, Strange Weather Isn't It , via Warp Records. The dance-rock act, who had previously announced a headlining set at the August 15 Pool Party at the Williamsburg Waterfront, has revealed the North American leg of their lengthy world tour which will kick off on September 4 in Los Angeles with an appearance at the FYF Festival and will run through the end of November. HANK ALTOGETHER: You probably know J. Tillman best as the drummer of Fleet Foxes. But he's also made a name for himself as a solo artist, releasing 2 albums last year alone. This year's offering Singing Ax comes out Sept. 14 on Western Vinyl . The first taste is the haunting, prone "Three Sisters" where Tillman plays it close to the chest, until the chest bursts open. J. After releasing two of 2009's finest records , I figured J. Tillman would keep quiet on the solo front in 2010. After all, as the drummer for Fleet Foxes (who are busy on their next release) it would seem he would have his hands full these days. Well, Western Vinyl announced today that that isn't the case. The ever-prolific Tillman found 3 days back in February to lay down his 7th studio album, the upcoming Singing Ax . "Three Sisters" is the stark opening cut, and one of the only [...]
