I was planning on doing some sort of "Best Covers of 2007" retrospective or something, but I'm sure you're already as sick of those lists as I am, so instead of looking back this week, I'm gonna look forward, to 2008. Lord knows I'm not the only one hoping that year brings some major changes in the world and this country in, oh let's say, November. So in hopes of that today's theme is revolution at its most extreme, social change at its least. This country's direction needs to change fast for a litany of reasons you [...]
With the craziness of the ice storm and then the holidays I haven't been able to check in much here but each time I do I find lots of emails asking about an end of the year list. And instead of emailing everyone back individually, I thought I'd just post and tell you it's coming. I'm actually finished with it but it's the posting/uploading of it that takes so long. I've also taken on my

Much like last week, this is NOT the end-all lists of Rudolph songs. In order of shortest to longest: Johnny Cash and Roy Clark ~ Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Jack Johnson ~ Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Sy Mann ~ Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Dean Martin ~ Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Los Straightjackets ~ Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Smiley Burnette [...]

I was planning on posting this entry for the Sabbath, but the snow's getting deep outside, and in my rural area, that often means long-term network outages. Hope no one minds getting this "Friday" post a bit early... Today we celebrate the holiday coversongs of Jewish-American songwriters, most notably the prolific Johnny Marks , who is best known for penning a holy host of non-canonical Christmas songs, and lesser known for being the head of ASCAP from 1957 to [...]

This week, I've gone back to a few artists from last week's mixtape because they were great (The Dimes, Minipop, Maia Hirasawa), then trown in a couple radio-play wonders (Jack Johnson, The Wombats), and sprinkled with several newbies. I've been having trouble this week with a couple of plugins I wrote for WordPress- so if you happen to notice somethings not working properly let me know, would ya? Otherwise, I'm just drawing a blank for things to say. Download the mixtape, listen, enjoy, comment, and I'll be back after the weekend. Tracklisting: [...]
Right now, I find myself unable to do an album review on Maritime as I feel like I'm jumping the gun. Anyway recent developments that have altered the way I blog (discontinued my two other blogs) is the non-sense with Google punishing blogs for having paid content. This has affected me personally. Just know that this music blog would not be possible with the money I made from paid blogging. I can host my own songs and I can purchase albums for reviewing whenever I want (a HUGE luxury). If you've come here from the [...]

jack johnson 's new album sleep through the static won't come out until next february but the first single will be available for download in a week or so. you can also hear it on the featured track section of brushfire records . or, without having to travel anywhere at all, just below. jack johnson - if i had eyes some hammock music might be just the ticket, for those of you in the northern hemisphere, as december creeps on in. come warm your hands with four minutes of [...]
With temperatures dropping and winter approaching, a new Jack Johnson single seems like the perfect natural cure for seasonal affective disorder. "If I Had Eyes" is the name of the new tune and it delivers on all of the breezy and mellow sounds the surfer-singer has become known for. Starting ...

Photo by Craig "CraSH" Hattori Toots and the Maytals' songs span and define the evolution of modern Jamaican music. Bob Marley's connection to marijuana culture puts him on all the posters, but it was The Maytals that are actually believed to be the first group to have used the word "reggae" in a song. Not enough to convince you of their worth? The Maytals hold the record for the largest number of number one hits in Jamaica, with 31 to their [...]

a.g.'s niece marley , shown at left unveiling "squinchy," her inspired response to zoolander's " magnum ," has been chosen as one of the finalists in the baby gap modeling competition. you can check her out in the bathtub (hubba-hubba), and vote for her as america's next top model, baby division, over on the other side of this link . & here are a couple of marley's favorite tunes, as she kindly broke down for the gap p.r. folks at the recent fitting & photo shoot: jack johnson - upside down [...]

And what about your soul? Is it cold? Is it straight from the mold and ready to be sold? . . . Gone, going, gone - everything. Gone, give a damn... Gone be the birds if they don't wanna sing. Gone people, all awkward with their things... Gone. . . . [...]
In all honesty, I would rather have to eat raw ground beef that I found behind a radiator than listen to anything written by the Turd-burglar in Paradise, but it fits for this week's theme. Nic and I are off to Hawaii this week, so I decided to do a sun vacation themed battle. A Pirate Looks at 40 - Jimmy Buffett I don't get the appeal of Buffett. No offense to the balding skullets who travel along with him to get that beach vibe in a field in Wisconsin, but I'll pass. I [...]
Emotionalism was released in May, and the Avett Brothers have released a number of records since 2000, so I'm very distraught realizing I'd never heard their music before. I was listening through my recent musical acquisitions and one song stuck out in its simplicity, "The Ballad of Love and Hate." In the song, Love and Hate are not abstract ideas but two people caught in a relationship that exists in despite of their opposing natures. What these natures are should be obvious. The song works because Love's name could be Lily and Hate's name could be Severus [...]

"Ninety-five degrees on the blacktop/ I hear its cool on Mars" It's that time of week again when we go bat-crazy and hit the shuffle button with all our might. here goes nothing. Third Eye Blind - The Background Interesting big of background on 3eb: when they played at Spring Fling, the guitarist tried to make out with a certain McKean girl's 9th grade sister. Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer First of their [...]

The little bean sprout and I are home alone this weekend while Amy is off at an out-of-town wedding shower. So far Hailey has tried to put sunglasses on the cat, she has hit him with a plastic baseball bat, and fetched plastic practice golf balls for me. We've been having a good time. Anyhow, here are a few songs that remind me of her or remind her of me. Some of them go back to the first mixtapes we made each other almost ten years ago. Enjoy. MP3 | The [...]
I'm going to post something completley unprecedented throughout IGIF history - an entire weekday's worth of history mixery. There is no better way to get back in the groove of things than cracking my dorkishly delightful whip, eh? Time for a mixery with an emphasis on history - and what a week it's been. While baseball may be considered "America's national pastime", it's hard to argue any American sport is more popular than (the once) American-exclusive sport of football. With the pinnacle of football popularity hinging [...]

This week's Contrast Podcast theme has to do with planets and other celesital bodies. The contributors scoured the vastness of space to bring you excellent planetary tracks. Even ex-planet Pluto was included in the bunch. I must say this week's podcast is by far my favorite one so far. Not only for the tracks from the other contributors (I especially like the Moonbabies' "Stars of Warburton" and Ash's "Girl from Mars"), but also beacuse I had way too much fun going through tracks to decide what to submit. I seriously had no shortage of [...]

It's Christmas Day! Jollywoohoo! So yes, I finally got it done. Consider that an accomplishment. Here I proudly present: Zeon's Mixtape Vol. 3! I save the best for last, so this collection of songs consist of my favorite, traditional and original, from most of my favorite artists & bands of different types of music, all served for one purpose: making you feel festive & all warm up inside, and appreciating the spirit at this time of the year. You can tell I've put quite much effort into making this, so I hope you will enjoy the mix as [...]
