Remember those times when you picked up a music magazine or a weekly music paper and read a playlist of what that publication's writers were playing in the office that week? There was power in those playlist charts. Here is my nod to that staple. No great fanfare, just ten of the best song around right now I've been playing lots of. And you thought 'Uffe's Workshop ' was the work of an madcap composer! Wait until you get a load of Battles' Tyondai Braxtons' 'Platinum Rows'. Ten minutes of bonkers off-kilter post-rock neo-classical kazoo-assisted [...]
I am not supposed to like music like Jack Penate makes. I am a 33yr old American guy who worships at the altar of bar bands and the singer/songwriter. But I really, really love this new Jack Penate record 'Everything Is New.' Really I do. It does an amazing job of taking such bleak, sometimes woeful subject matter and pairing it with this really upbeat, almost euphoric music...the contrast won me over. All 9 songs on the record are really solid, not a second of filler. I am so glad I decided to open my ears and [...]
Must Be A Sign, It Is Time! Jack Penate s second %2014album came out on Tuesday and it s opening track is proving good fodder for the task at hand: "I stop when I hear a drum beat call Must be a sign, it is time I need to take myself away From the ...

ok. so this is a pretty decent compilation. It's from the Aussie label, Modular . The release has two discs, one mixed and one unmixed. I've crapped on about this release before...you can check that out here . The mix cd is done by Andee Frost, a member of the Bang Gang Deejays . It's good good good and has a really nice track selection. Canyons, Van She, Knightlife, The Golden Filter, Bag Raiders etc etc etc. All pretty darn sweet. The disc crams 23 tracks into an hour and 20 mins though, so there's [...]
I might as well admit it to the world: I'm a sucker for a well-written pop ballad. (Maybe this has something to do with my two X chromosomes?) But it was quite a shock to me that Jack Penate , the London soul singer who earlier this year brought us the decidedly tropical-themed 'Tonight's Today' and the dance-poppy 'Be the One', should come along with a tear-jerker of a tune to win my heart. Filmed in the Jordanian desert solely on a Super 8 camera while Penate was on holiday, the [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music Jack Penate says his new, more dance-oriented album, 'Everything Is New,' was a departure for him. In a bid to alter his sound, he changed the way he wrote the songs, starting with the music fist and adding lyrics later. "I did everything in reverse," he tells Spinner, "which just made me react differently to the music, which was great." So what inspired this tactic? "I was talking to Tina Turner last week, and she [...]

I found out about the Death Ships on musicdealers.com where they are a featured artist and this band, who are currently based in Chicago, started off as a solo project by the lead singer and guitarist Dan Moloney and it has grown from there. Describing their sound as 'rock, folk, pop and alt country', it's an interesting mix, and it definitely works. Symmetrical Smiles - Death Ships (mp3) Story Never Gets Old - Death Ships (mp3) [...]

Yes you read correctly. I when indie pop was in vogue I did actually enjoy 'Matinee. I thought it was good mockney charm with some catchy tunes and I think when I first heard 'Second Minute Or Hour' on MTV TWO around new year 2006, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Now when I listen to that album I can see why it would grate, but at the time it was brilliant. His latest effort 'Everything Is New' is surprisingly excellent. I didn't expect to hear a sound which doesn't feel dated. Not as upbeat, the [...]

Tonight's Today [mp3] Young Brit-pop sensation, Jack Penate, ( Matinee ) comes back at us with a sophomore album, Everything is New , rife with current ambient/soul experiments, out 8/18/09 on XL . Penate's a catchy songwriter and his unaffected, natural accent enchants like sweet honeysuckle in the wild. The first track of the album opens bold with horns and a stir akin to fellow Brit, Rick Astley , from the late 80's. Past the first track, Penate plays [...]
