Hi kids. Happy Sunday. How was your weekend? Mine was good, thanks for asking. Last night I ventured out into The OC to hit up Pizza Port San Clemente with an old high school friend who is visiting the west coast this week. She was a bit tired after a long journey but she was [...]

Ben Seretan - My One True Love I’ve been thinking a lot about death lately (those who know me know why). Today is the 3rd anniversary of my friend Jack Rose ’s passing - an event that spiritually marked the end of an era in the Philly music scene. He was a pinnacle of our group of friends, gruffly making sure his hat was filled with dollars and coins for anyone sitting on the stage performing at our backyard bonfire parties if he weren’t up there himself creating magic on his guitar. In Jack’s [...]

2-6-4-8 who do we appreciate!? People with dyslexia. I'm learning to appreciate the quiet side of life. Like not so much drinking. Like showing up to work without a hangover. Like having a few extra bills in my wallet. It's a good thing, too, because I'm about to drop $2400 to fix my car this [...]

I am a brother to dragons and a companion to owls. Job said that, but I sure can relate. I'm southbound tomorrow, looking for some sunshine, but will write the odd post provided there's WiFi on the menu somewhere. As usual, you won't get a christmas ditty out of me, but I do wish you all a feliz navidad . The Mighty Upsetter - Flames Of The Dragon Jack Rose - Song For The Owl Beasts Of Bourbon - Chase The Dragon [...]
Jack Rose - St. Louis Blues (by HoneyboyWalter ) Jack Rose plays ‘St Louis Blues’ on his Koa Weissenborn guitar built by welsh luthier Pete Howlett. Friday 2nd September 2005.
Cian Nugent’s tribute to Jack Rose, from Honest Strings . “Not long after Rose died, Rayborn sent a late-night mass e-mail to most of the musicians he’d met as a listener or label head, asking if they’d like to offer a tune for his tribute to Rose. There were no length limits and no style guidelines— only no covers of Rose tunes because, as Rayborn puts it, “Jack would not dig that.” By the next morning, he’d secured a contribution commitment from a musician who hadn’t even received the original invitation. [...]
Jack Rose - Excerpt from Arthurfest (by Lance Bangs ) Jack Rose passed away two years ago on this day. RIP Soulbro, I’ll never forget you.
Feeling slightly better this morning (my fever broke in the middle of the night, which is always a weird feeling - waking up in a pool of your own sweat but cooler and somewhat relieved) I donned my Sunday Best and drove out to Topanga State Park for my dear friends Fawn and Brian's wedding. [...]
Download the full Brown Bunny soundtrack HERE (then buy it, if you can find it) As at least one or two of you might know, I've developed, through my wife, an obsession of sorts for Vincent Gallo, whether it be his ... Continue reading
Sonic Youth man set to release instrumental Jack Rose tribute album.

Hello, dear readers. As is tradition, we're in 2011 and we've barely started posting our best of lists. So, let's cut straight to the chase. The Top 25 list is in alphabetical order, but of course some have been way more significant for me this year. Chris Abrahams ' Play Scar, Forest Swords ' Dagger Paths, Nerve City 's Sleepwalker EP, Swans' My Father and Sun Araw 's On Patrol will probably be the defining sounds of 2010 for me. Some like Gonjasufi, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Dum Dum [...]

For those who aren’t familiar with him or his work, American folk guitarist Jack Rose died a year ago last week on December 5, 2009. He was only 38 years old but had already compiled an extensive discography of amazing material including Red Horse, White Mule (2002), Kensington Blues (2005), and the posthumous Luck In The Valley which was released earlier this year. It is a simply amazing album. Now there are plenty of originals on Luck In The Valley but a number of songs are covers, and Rose [...]
Whenever a new instrumental acoustic guitar album reaches my ears, I'm always thrilled. I'm a sucker for new ideas of compositions on this instrument and always in search for inspiration from other musicians, to see how far they went in terms of innovation in their music. Acoustic solo guitar can be a tricky thing. It [...]

Told y'all I'd get back on the grind. I'd like to say that I'm sorry for missing last month and the truth is....I am....mostly. At the same time, the month off was nice. Unless you're doing a monthly podcast, I don't think you can appreciate just how fast each month passes. How people do weekly podcasts is quite simply beyond me. That said, enough about my whining. Let's talk about this month's podcast.... Most months I make a pretty concentrated effort to play new music, so I decided to just let [...]
John Fahey - "Yellow Princess" MP3 John Fahey - "Orinda-Moraga" MP3/download Well, I still didn't get around to publishing anything this week but it's been crazy. I offer my humblest, sincerest apologies and proffer this great John Fahey MP3. Got Yellow Princess at Record Store Day and haven't stopped listening or ruminating. Fantastic and [...]
Hans Chew plays the keys, and can only imagine that the board in which these keys rest is not the burnished wood of a baby grand. Oh no, I picture cracked ivory and plywood, strings tuned so many times they moan with their collected age. Hans Chew, a contemporary of the late, great Jack Rose, [...]
