Ghostland Observatory will lazerize WaMu this weekend / photo by Christopher Nelson We've got another great week of shows in Seattle, with a ton of variety. This is a city where you can see a good show just about every night of the week, and this one is no exception. Starting on Monday night, we've got some great Northwest connections back in town with former Fleet Fox Josh Tillman's new project, Father John Misty , performing at Neumos. On Tuesday, there's a psych fest at Neumos with Black Moth Super Rainbow, Lumerians, and Pictorials . [...]
While this album does have its lovely quiet moments interspersed with scorching barn-burners, Wilson does have a bit of room to grow and mature as a musician. There are a lot of famous Jack Wilsons out there. The Wikipedia disambiguation page on the name lists no less than 14 famous people with the moniker, including, of course, Jackie Wilson, the American soul and R&B singer, along with the American baseball player, the Chicago-based jazz pianist, and various other boxers, footballers, and cricketers who have come and gone. Joining this crowded space is Jack Wilson, a sensitive singer-songwriter who cut [...]

March roars in like a lion with this week's release by Ceremony - yeah, there are like two or three bands with that name, but this is the thrashy hard-core one, rather than the mopey shoegazy one. On their fourth album, produced by Seattle's own John Goodmanson, this California band evolves into what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "an intense and expansive blend of classic '70s punk and bristling '80s post-punk, with bands like Wire, Mission of Burma and the Sex Pistols being major touchstones on this consistently stellar set of songs ranging from explosive punk ragers [...]

I came away from listening to Jack Wilson 's new self-titled album believing that he truly has a very personal way of coating a rust tinged world with some beautiful colors, and a seemingly infinite amount of them. Trying to distance himself from the idea of making a concept album, he really gave himself the opportunity to sing in many voices. This approach allows the emotional ride of this album to be as unpredictable and varying as the course of any other natural human life, allowing it to breathe. Jack is about to release his debut album on Portland [...]

Seattle and Austin are both towns with very distinct personalities, both as cities and through the musicians that reside within. Yet here is one man - Jack Wilson - that flirts with geography, calling both locations home and melding together the two sounds for a style of folk-based americana rock that is entirely captivating. On his self-titled LP, Jack Wilson bares his innermost self that evokes the wanderer's deep longing for the beauty of new sunsets, picturesque scenes of nature, and the comfort of being in the [...]

It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

Jack Wilson - Valhalla Austin's folk-pop songwriter Jack Wilson is on the cusp of releasing his debut album on Fluff & Gravy Records. As of March 6, 2012, the record will release and it will contain the sweet little dreamy love song "Valhalla," a tenderly strummed and warmly sung folk/americana sound wrapped into this beautiful package. Its a bit grandiose and a bit tender and Wilson's voice seems to perfectly fit the situation. If the rest of the album is this good I'm going to be one happy guy. Jack Wilson on the web [...]
American Girls at Slack Fest 2011 ::: Photo by Abbey Simmons How do you get a eight of Seattle's best rock bands all on the same bill on the same day? You take them to Stanwood. Stanwood? Yes, Stanwood. Far enough from anywhere to trigger a proximity clause problems, but close enough to where it can [...]
The Maldives at Slack Fest ::: photo by Abbey Simmons [COI alert: Slack Fest has paid me to help with press, but as you can tell by the line-up I'd be excited for and writing about Slack Fest were that not the case.] Rock'n'Roll festivals and racetracks don't have the best, um, track record. But unlike [...]
A short drive north of Everett, among unmowed fields and farmland, nestled by the Stillaguamish River, lies Slime Dog Raceway. The river has a current, but in the hot summer sun is a true escape. The dirt track circle feels small for cars to be racing around at any speed as you walk inside of [...]

Jack Wilson splits his time between the comfy, southern warmth of Austin and the cooler, sopping city that is Seattle. While he's in Seattle, he's backed by the Wife Stealers, and elsewhere, it's pretty much just him. On his latest self-titled, Wilson zig-zags between full-on Americana rock, and solemn, poetic lullabies about places and people of timeless impact. He opens his album with the sound of footfalls on loose gravel — a sound that is immediately evocative of distance and mindful wandering — a more than appropriate prelude to an album that looks to transport the listener to the image [...]
