About four years ago I had the pleasure of meeting one of the people responsible for kick starting the whole Swedish pop genre. Ola from SRVC came to Miami to evade the Stockholm winter and we all ended up partying together for weeks. He loved our city so much he's now become an official MIA snow bird and comes here every winter. He loves us and we love him so make sure you catch him DJing next time he's in town. I have so much respect for the Service Clan they were peddling Jens Lekman, The [...]
Perhaps it was buried under news of the earthquake, but there was a comedy extravaganza in downtown Lawrence on Saturday night. The Jackpot Saloon was the epicenter of haha, ground zero for chuckles.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
Merrill Garbus, the brain and face of tUnE-yArDs, is a jarring character. Her haircut is confrontationally lopsided, and she performs with a pink boa around her neck and colorful streaks painted across her cheeks.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
Baltimore-based Future Islands performs lush, swollen new-wave with minimal equipment and time. The three members gained momentum coming out of Dan Deacon's Wham City collective in 2008, claiming 'post-wave' (post punk + new wave) as their own sound and releasing three albums, each more like a snowballing opera than a new-wave record.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
Along with her sister Jessica, Jennifer Clavin formed two-fifths of exuberant indie punks Mika Miko. Though that group disbanded in 2009, the sisters continued making music.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
I hadn't been to a Farmer's Ball, KJHK's annual battle of the bands, since Hospital Ships took the title a handful of years back. Perhaps I haven't made it because it makes me feel old, but whatever.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
Pierced Arrows is an intensely cultish garage-roots band that descends from Portland to Lawrence weirdly often. The whole story is long and allegedly includes draft dodging, bear hunting, countless bands, and eventually marriage.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
Wrath and Ruin recently threw a record release party/show at the Riot Room in mid-September. Now, the band's preparing to present its long-awaited release to its hometown of Lawrence.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Veronica Falls will be performing an acoustic set at Jackpot Records on Hawthorne in Portland, in advance of their show at The Doug Fir, on Monday 10/10. Should be tremendous.

Hola Music Lovers, Let's face it, as much as I steer away from the word POP, so many good songs out there are POP. I usually do more obscure Italo and new wave on my mixes but this time I wanted to create something different, so I picked some of my pop/disco favorite records and put them all together to create this mix called NIXED POP as in rejected pop. . NixeD Pop . Prelude 1: Fairmont - Cannon . [...]
If Sadbastardville were a real place, Tim Kasher would be its poet laureate. This is not meant to be derisive, because we've all been there.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Tim Kasher , frontman for Cursive , is on tour pushing his EP, Bigamy: More Sons From The Monogamy Sessions . He's making a stop at The Jackpot tonight in Lawrence. Bigamy is a spinoff of his debut album, The Game Of Monogamy , which was released last year. Bigamy was written mostly during Kasher's tour for The Game Of Monogamy . It tells stories of "mixed emotions, heartbreak, and adulthood restlessness, the songs range sonically from the slow-burning opener 'No Harmony' to the syncopated pop of 'A Bluer [...]
Bless the Jackpot for almost getting last night's Ganglians show started early, as it was billed. Most often the venue's shows don't begin until after 11 pm, running until last call — a dangerous venture for anyone with a morning gig.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Based on the latest news surrounding The Drums , I didn't expect to like anything new from the band. Yet their new single, 'Money', quickly placed itself in my top three favorite songs from the band. Much of that can be attributed to the fact that it sounds a lot like early Smiths and I'm pretty much a sucker for Morrissey's old group; the first twenty seconds of the song made me actually think it was a cover. But as the chorus kicks in with that rich blend of '80s British influenced indie [...]
The Jackpot was so hot up by the stage that within five minutes of last night's show starting, pretty much the entire audience was covered with a sheen of sweat. The crowd -- a mix of older hipsters and all-ages punk rockers -- crammed in near the stage, eager to see Danish imports Iceage . [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Hilariously DIY new video from Hit The Jackpot's new Holiday cassette. In The Hearse is a more punk-tinged affair than the previously-blogged Holiday , but shows off the same off-kilter attitude to pop; it feels like it's constantly pushing forward to somewhere it never quite arrives at, but in a way that's intriguing rather than frustrating. 4. 1. Jackpot 2. Roskallion 3. Blame The Speakers 4. Leapfrog 5. 4th Blind Mouse 6. Wie Alt Bist Du [...]
