Frank Yang Flashback to November 2003 and Belle & Sebastian's second last visit to Toronto and first at Massey Hall - an eminently memorable show for both reasons bad and good. The bad being an invitation to have an audience member come up and sing a song with the band backfiring when she demanded they play one of HER own songs (which they did, politely and awkwardly) and the good being pretty much everything else but particularly their impromptu (at hollered audience request) cover of The Jackson 52s "I Want You [...]
Well.. it's that time of the month again. And no, I don't mean that time when your girlfriend is prone to bawling so uncontrollably during a movie like The Fall "because the world just isn't fair to little girls" that you're forced to stop watching 20 minutes before the film ends. No no! This is truly a time more manic, though perhaps the feelings evoked are no more rational. I've been lurking all month, saving up for this, and I am happy to report that the blogosphere has some cool stuff for you. In general, though this series [...]

Nothing like a little bit of French soul to get your day started! Ben L'Oncle's uptempo cover of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" has created a bit of a stir in Europe this summer, causing some critics to lament the lack of originality to his sound, and others to [...]

"Selling all my records. $40. Call 555-5555 for more information". He could've saved himself the $3 he spent for the newspaper ad and simply emailed me directly. Two hours later, I was in Dick's living room looking at "all" his records: three boxes of albums and a couple of boxes of singles. Turns out Dick sold cars from his front yard for "20-some" years and had some experience stretching the truth. Turns out that "all my records" were the 150 or so leftovers he hadn't moved to his girlfriend's 96-year old father's house. "The state bought [...]

Every Princetonian knows that this is the most wonderful time of the year; more merry than Christmas, more carefree than summer, and more orange than Halloween. It's the time when, buoyed by the excitement of seeing old friends (or making new ones), we desperately try to delay the oncoming semester with as much alcohol as possible. Music is just the facilitator. Quality here is not nearly as important as pure indulgence. Just enjoy the fact that every day this week is a lazy Sunday and feel excited. Because it's Princeton 2011. The Jackson [...]
Mark Kozelek aka. The Master of Everything Gorgeous raises the bar for M.J. cover-age with “I’ll Be There.”
As mentioned in the spring, Mark Kozelek’s latest Sun Kil Moon album, Admiral Fell Promises, comes bundled with I’ll Be There (if purchased directly from Caldo Verde Records ) , a limited-edition EP of mostly covers that includes renditions of songs by Stereolab, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and a title track by the Jackson 5. Hearing Kozelek, who’s in his early 40s, sing this understated take on the lead vocal made famous by a then 12-year-old Michael Jackson [...]
Hearing Nirvana 's angst-ridden 90's anthem over the music of "Rockin' Robin" is cringe worthy. It's like seeing a big shaggy dog dressed up in a tight little Christmas sweater standing shamefully in a corner, tail between legs while everyone crowds around laughing and taking pictures. The really sad part is that I can't deny it - this mash-up is executed perfectly. Ugh. A Mark Vidler/ Go Home Productions mix. I don't know who this Mark Vidler character is, but he's an asshole for this one.
This is a completely mixed up mixtape consisting of songs from the summer with a few older tunes thrown in to celebrate "The Best Bloggerin' Week Ever" . It is essentially a weird combination of favorite songs from the past year-ish, leaving out a lot of obvious ones, mixed with this month's new favorites. This week I redesigned the blog, added the media player, spent some hard earned cash on a file storage site, created some new accounts, added some fancy buttons, did some HTML magic, and threw [...]
I'm not a big fan of mash-ups, but this one works really well especially with the dichotomy between the two songs. Kurt Cobain has never sounded happier.

To most music fans, Gary, Indiana is best known as being the home of Michael Jackson and the extended Jackson clan. But this run-down industrial town situated smack-bang in the middle of the Mid-West U.S.' Rust Belt also boasts another musical star - the mercurial Freddie Gibbs. Okay, so Gibbs has an awfully long way away before he reaches the star status that Michael and his siblings enjoy/ed. But he can definitely handle his own on the microphone. And he's got the critics on side , too. That's a good start. Freddie isn't afraid to [...]

A mash up of Ellie Goulding's "Starry Eyed" and The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." I swear, she could not have arms, a nose, and half a leg: I would still love Ellie Goulding based on how talented she is. Sick mash up, but then again, you could put some death metal remix over Starry Eyed and it would still be great. mp3: Hulk Mash - I Want You Back Vs. Starry Eyed
