What do you do if you admire a musician's skill and craft, yet can't quite get behind the results of that craft? Thus is the problem with Iron & Wine , the brainchild of Sam Beam, now on its fifth full-length record and featuring an ever-expanding sound that seems to go deeper into the past. Ghost on Ghost finds Iron & Wine turning into something of a modern Van Morrison , complete with smooth horns, jaunty folk tunes, and a flair for [...]
Raised in Georgia on a musical diet of soul, country, blues and folk, Kristina Train is now happily settled in London where she released her second album Dark Black last fall, an LP we described as "a sumptuous and seductive collection of vintage-sounding pop." Train's remarkable voice is what makes her own music so irresistible and when she turns to covers, the effect is even more stunning. You may have heard Jackson Browne's "These Days" before but hearing Train's version -- both crystalline and soulful -- is like [...]

While there is certainly no shortage of multi-day music festivals each summer, anyone that has made the trip to the scenic coastal town of Newport, Rhode Island for the annual Newport Folk Festival can attest to the fact that it may very well be one of the best festivals out there. What makes the granddaddy of all music fests feel so special year after year is the reverence not just from the attendees, but from the artists as well, [...]

Each Grammys weekend, the music world comes together to celebrate the MusiCares Person Of The Year with a dinner, auction and tribute concert. This year, MusiCares, which is the health and human services organization affiliated with The Recording Academy, honored New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen at the L.A. Convention Center. Not only did the likes of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Sting, the Alabama Shakes, Jim James and Tom Morello and Mumford & Sons pay their respects to The Boss by covering one of his songs, but Springsteen himself closed out the evening with a five-song set. L os Angeles folk rock band Dawes has finally released a new single off their upcoming record, Stories Don't End, titled "From A Window Seat," a song written on Goldsmith's uneasiness flying in airplanes. It's got a distinctive classic rock / pop feel, which seems very very influenced by their time touring with Jackson Browne. It's a bit of a sonic shift, but definitely feels like a maturation process from one of the best young bands out there. Look for Stories Don't End April 9th. Preorder here .

Dakin's off this week, and he left me in charge, which means I totally mentioned sports. It's championship week in the NFL, and for those of you not as sports minded as the rest of us (aka those of you make jokes like "what's happening in sports ball this week?"), I'm also recommending some "music [...]
The other day I was talking on the phone with a friend who hangs out on the CBGB's scene a lot. She was regaling me with examples of the delights available to females in the New York subway system. "So the train came to a sudden halt and I fell on my ass in [...]
Rising star Jonathan Wilson and his band opened for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Europe this summer leading to Wilson forming a friendship with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. Jackson Browne speaks the truth which is why his music has always spoken to me. Today he gives us something to think about over the holidays. I hope you enjoy it. My surprise gift to you today is a great 1976 live performance of For A Dancer by Jackson and David Lindley. This song is on my final playlist and it is on my mind today because a coworker that I have known for over 30 years died of a brain aneurism yesterday. [...]

While full album shows have become something of the norm in recent years, we haven't seen too many bands outside of My Morning Jacket attempt to do what Deer Tick will do with their upcoming three-night residency at Brooklyn Bowl next month - tackle their entire body of recorded work. Over the course of three Wednesday nights, the raucous bar-rock band will tackle almost all of their studio output - LPs and EPs - in their entirety sans their much-beloved debut War Elephant. The run will kick-off on December 5, with the pairing of Born [...]
