Our review of the stellar new collection of Bob Dylan covers in support of Amnesty International.

76 newly recorded Bob Dylan songs by over 80 artists are scheduled for physical (4 discs) and digital release tomorrow, January 24, 2012. Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan features a stellar and diverse group of artists across the generational and musical spectrum. The performers, including many of Amnesty International's longtime supporters, range in age from pop star Miley Cyrus, 19, to folk music legend Pete Seeger, who, at 92, records Dylan's poignant "Forever Young," with a children's chorus. The diversity of the musicians and musical genres [...]

Today I've got men on my mind. Now get yours out of the gutter. All of them are fully clothed -- and singing. Nearly three months ago, I wrote a post titled "Five Great Songs By Five Great Female Singers That Should Have Gone to No. 1," and doesn't it figure? Musically speaking, I'm always dwelling on the creative and performing virtues of the fairer sex. I guess I'm gay like that. There must be some microchip hidden in the brains of gay men that makes us respond more readily to women -- female pop stars, actresses, style [...]

Earlier this afternoon HT faves Dawes teamed up with legendary singer/songwriter Jackson Browne to play a short set for the few Occupy Wall Street demonstrators left in Zuccotti Park. Both Laurel Canyon acts, each from a different generation, first paired up when Browne lent his talents to Fire Away on Dawes latest LP and have since played a co-bill and sat in with each other. [All photos by Jeremy Gordon] Dawes and JB's set featured a take on the younger group's When My Time Comes as [...]

"These Days" is a remarkable song. Jackson Browne originally wrote the song when he was only 16 years old and submitted a demo of the track to various artists and publishing companies. The first recording of it occurred a few years later featuring vocals by Nico and finger-picked electric guitar provided by Browne himself. Later, when he became a recording artist of his own notoriety, Browne recorded a new version of the track with his own vocals and production assistance from Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers (who subsequently recorded his own version of the song). It's an often covered [...]

Is anything still going on at Zuccotti Park? Regardless, Jackson Browne and Dawes , who have collaborated before ( just ask Lefsetz !), will perform for Occupy Wall Street at Zuccotti Park today (12/1) sometime between noon and 1:30pm (I've seen it listed as 12, 12:30 and 1). Oh and Third Eye Blind , who wrote a song for the movement , will be there too! How's it going to be? How's it going to be... Later tonight the movement will be at Lincoln Center with Philip Glass . Watch Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes and Alela Diane Cover 'These Days' Live in Italy.

Two nights ago in Milan, Italy's Teatro Smeraldo, Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold joined the evening's opener, Portland-based Rough Trade singer-songwriter Alela Diane, for a pretty pass at Jackson Browne's oft-covered stone-cold classic "These Days." It's a folk take, of course, fingerpicked and harmonized and doing justice the song's enduring introspective pangs of overcast mopery. It's somewhere between Nico and Jackon's recorded versions of it, with a touch Pac-Northwest plaid. Watch it, grab it: Read More...

Last night Dawes concluded their co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper at the Music Box in Hollywood. The band's return to their hometown seemed to be perfect timing, as lead singer and guitar player Taylor Goldsmith hardly had a voice after the 2-month stretch. Somehow though, Taylor's voice was hardly affected, and his incredible tone and energy moved the crowd to a soul shaking sing along; necessary at any proper Dawes show. Their hometown show also attracted some heavy hitters in the music industry, both on stage and off. Industry figure and author [...]
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame presents the music and nothing but the music on CD.
It's probably not the hippest thing to do: featuring a Jackson Browne that's a little over two years old, but a great song is a great song, and even we bloggers can't float in the dramatically popular all the time. I'll keep it simple to save from embarrassing myself, Jackson Browne is ridiculously talented and [...]

Jackson Browne : The Barricades of Heaven [ purchase ] Jackson Browne has been known since the early 1970s not only for his performances, but also as a great songwriter. That makes the writing credits on his 1996 album Looking East interesting reading. Each of the songs is credited to the same seven writers, including Browne. Looking at who plays on the album, I assume that Browne wrote the lyrics, and then brought them to his working band at the time. They then would have created the melodies and arrangements together. [...]

We talked to the L.A. band before their big tour with Blitzen Trapper // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Running on Empty is the fifth album by American singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. Released in 1977, the album reached #3 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in 1978 and stayed on the charts for 65 weeks. The single for the title track, "Running on Empty", peaked at #11 and the follow-up single, "The Load-Out"/"Stay", reached #11 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. The album produced two Grammy Award nominations in 1979: one for Album of the Year (the winner being Saturday Night Fever: The Original Movie Sound Track) and the other for Pop Male Vocalist for the lyrics [...]

Jonathan Wilson titled his new album "Gentle Spirit," but you suspect it's only because "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" was already taken. Wilson, the North Carolina-bred singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer and keeper of the Laurel Canyon flame , has birthed a 78-minute opus that takes deep, long breaths, its lush orchestration and serpentine arrangements rewarding patient listeners and fans of guitar work that creates its own language. But noodling it's not; Wilson packs plenty of meditative meat on "Gentle Spirit's" lanky bones, if the anybody cares enough to set aside their digital devices long enough to hear. The [...]
