A series of solo acoustic albums only seems natural for a guy like Jackson Browne . The darkly boyish California singer-songwriter was taking it easy in ramshackle coffee houses across the nation back when Starbuck was merely Captain Ahab's first mate. Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1 , released in 2005, was a restrained, introspective look into some classic cuts from these formidable years, plus a few late career highlights. On all of those gently crackling tracks, Browne sounded more than at home with only a guitar, piano, and, of course, his [...]
Republican running mates John McCain and Sarah Palin aren't making any friends in the music industry - quite the opposite, in fact. Rather than going through the appropriate channels, the duo are seemingly stealing music from many legendary artists who aren't even backing them. Van Halen last week issued a cease-and-desist order when the politicians began [...]

There is a great article in the new issue of Rolling Stone on the 10 year anniversary of The Big Lebowski ; "The Decade Of The Dude" written by Sam Jones. Assistant Editor, Andy Greene, contributes an excellent piece "Inside the Dude's Stoner Soundtrack" . In the article, music supervisor T-Bone Burnett recounts his troubles in securing the rights to Townes Van Sandt's cover of the Stones' " Dead Flowers ". "[Former Stones manager] Allen [...]

What about the idea of putting kids on a separate plane? A poll on Air Fare Watch Dog says 85 percent of flying public wants to see children in a separate section of plane. According to their press release, when asked "Should airlines have a section of the plane reserved for parents with babies and smaller children?" 10,170 or 58 percent of respondents answered, "Yes, they should have done this long ago," while 27 percent answered, "Yes, but they never will and it'll never [...]

I spent last week in Colorado, and on the drive back to Denver from Boulder, we stopped in beautiful Broomfield to buy some T-shirts at the ARC Thrift Shop . Before ARC, all we had was a dead iPod and the radio, so I bought a gift for the car in the form of a cassette of Jackson Browne's first album, Saturate Before Using . Side B came on first, and its' lead off track, "Something Fine", has been in my head ever since. Perfect [...]

Dear CS, Quick question for you...do things like this effect your love of musician? I know you are a big Jackson Browne fan [as illustrated here and here ] and possibly/maybe as big a John McCain fan...so what happens when they clash? Are the Browne CDs headed for the bin? This doesn't usually happen to me as all my favorite musicians are Hollywood loving liberal elitists [or worst yet...socialists]. Cheers, Matt
Jackson Browne is suing presidential candidate John McCain! Apparently in these early stages of alzheimers McCain forgot about copyright law. The somewhat senile Republican nominee has been using the Browne's 1977 hit "Running on Empty" in a campaign ad without permission. The suit names the Republican National Committee and the Ohio Republican Party as defendants, seeking an injunction and $75,000 in damages. In other exciting legal maneuvers, Virgin Records is suing 30 Seconds to Mars for $30 million. Apparently Jared Leto has failed to deliver the [...]

John McCain has found himself front and center of a lawsuit brought against him by singer Jackson Browne . Browne is accusing the Republican presidential candidate of using his 1977 hit song ' Running On Empty ' in a campaign advertisement without his permission. The suit, which was filed in US District Court in Los Angeles, names McCain , the Republican National Committee and the Ohio Republican Party as defendants. According to the Associated Press Browne is seeking at least $75,000 in damages as well [...]

Jackson Browne: I Thought I Was A Child [ purchase ] My introduction to Jackson Browne's music came when my middle brother brought home Browne's masterpiece, Late For The Sky, in 1974. Browne's follow-up was an album where somebody got him to agree to the worst excesses of 1970s production for The Pretender, and a perfectly good batch of songs was ruined by a wall of unnecessary strings and other unneeded touches. At that point, my brother gave up on Jackson Browne, and never looked back. But I didn't give [...]
John McCain's people's attempts to mock Barack Obama - and in particular, Obama's claims that proper tyres and regular tune-ups are better for the planet than drilling out more oil - have run into trouble. His team decided to stick Jackson Browne's Running On Empty on the advert . Yes. Jackson Browne. Browne first made them pull the ad; now, he's taking legal action. And the McCain campaign are rushing backwards to try and disassociate themselves from the mess: Robert Bennett, chairman of the Ohio party, said the ad was pulled when Browne [...]

HappyParts is not shy about his affinity for the movie Taxi Driver. The identification with the main character Travis Bickle resurfaces again and again - especially on long days. As the wizard asks- " (Indie) Life getting you down? " The soundtrack, and score to the movie is one of the best ever. Just for kicks- through CD recorder: here are are two tracks found in the movie recorded direct from LP- if you listen closely- you will feel the warm analog glow of the vinyl. Travis' diary can only be found on the original Artista LP version. And that [...]

I've spent the last several Tuesdays on the subject of the cover article of Issue 1054 (June 12) of Rolling Stone , 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time compiled by writers David Fricke, Brian Hiatt, Evan Serpick, and Douglas Wolk. Last week I posted a few of my own favorite guitar songs that did not make this list, and I'll add a couple more today. Over a dozen years ago I recorded a live version of the Smashing Pumpkins performing "Siva" that became a much-played favorite. [...]

Like Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah , which was transformed in the popular imagination by Jeff Buckley's haunting version of John Cale's cover, there is a plurality of high-profile, popularly dominant sources for These Days , Jackson Browne's melancholy yet ultimately optimistic tribute to the general malaise and lonesome depression that characterizes the soul after a long relationship has come to an inevitable end. But where in the case of Halellujah the versions which rose to obscure the original were recorded long afterward, in the case of These Days , [...]

Jackson Browne: Rosie [ purchase ] I was about 8 years old when the album Running On Empty came out. Little wonder I missed the wink and nod "love interest" from this song, until around five years later. The song is a tender, beautiful, heartbreaking salute to that "anything is better than nothing" emotion, which will worry souls deep into the night. And, too, this song represents my second entry for our week's theme that is not really about a [...]
I've mentioned often enough that my Dad, being a Canadian and hence raised on the stuff, brought all sorts of Americana into my early musical consciousness. He played all sorts of stuff: Neil Young, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bob Seger, James Taylor, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, The Band, The Holy Modal [...]

I know the rest of the cover bloggers are vehemently against this post but I believe all these artists are multi-talented and deserve any recognition than can get. I mean it's not like I'm posting about Britney Spears here. Recently Fong Songs did a wonderful post on Zooey Deschanel which got me thinking about all the actors/musicians out there. Some of these multi-talented celebrities have opted for music over acting but some have managed to keep both going strong. So to start off we'll go with Zooey Deschanel . Zooey is best known [...]
Happy Earth Day inhabitants of the planet! Today is a great time to focus on the big and small ways we can all do our part at home, work, school and in our communities on a daily basis to nurture our planet and conserve our natural resources. Having been born and raised in Oklahoma, Native American culture has always been a big part of my life and a cornerstone of their tribal cultures
