Here's one from the "busted luck folk singer" files. From being badly burned in a classroom fire to a subsequent life of depression, despair, and poverty, Jackson Frank seemed to have had enough sorrows to fill a vast catalog. Instead, he made a hauntingly pretty debut (songs later covered by folkies and non-folkies, apparently) and that's about it. From the comfortable vantage point of the listener, that's all there needs to be. I'm sure, however, that his life would've been a lot better had he been a more prolific man. Sad sad sad. [...]

Jackson C. Frank - "You Never Wanted Me" When Edmund told his first wife that he loved her they were driving through a wooded highway, the trees like thin sentinels, still and stoic, on guard. Shoes were off, and the hood of her sweatshirt hid all but the most important parts of her face. She was squished into the corner between the seat and the door, and making up a story about what actually happened to Kurt Cobain, and then he said it. When Edmund told his second wife that he loved [...]

PHEW! Thank fuck that's (more or less) over. This year has been a bit full-on, I have to confess, but the bulk of the hard work now seems more or less over. Our last release (Lil Daggers) came out last week, and our label Christmas Party is now done and dusted which leaves me a relatively comfortable run into the Christmas period from now on, which is some for which I am quite grateful. Nevertheless, The Leg album, the Jesus H. Foxx album and the second album by Yusuf Azak are all on the menu for early next [...]
Oh hi, guys. I didn't hear you come in. Thanks for stopping by. So…I drank a lot last night. Like, A LOT a lot. And oh boy did I ever make an ass out of myself. It's almost as if when I drink now I convince myself that I'm creating a social performance art piece [...]
Video: John Hawkes: "Marcy's Song" (Jackson C. Frank Cover) While watching the trailer to director Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene the other day, one moment caught my ears by surprise: actor John Hawkes ( Me and You and Everyone We Know , Winter's Bone ) singing a chilling cover of Jackson C. Frank's "Marcy's Song." As it turns out, Hawkes, who conjures up a bit of both Frank and Townes Van Zandt in the performance, has a long history in music in addition to his lauded film career. [...]
Shades of Springsteen's Nebraska bristle within Lewis' subtle yet stunning compositions. He gently plucks his acoustics, touting a bluesy swagger with a touch of reverb. Throughout L'Amour, the virtually unknown artist plays pianos and guitars organically with an eerie sense of complacency, produced at a gentle pace like a somber ballad. This patient mode of [...]

Totally went off last night at Nate's birthday party. There was a gnarly stripper in a LOST replica DHARMA Initiative jumpsuit, way too much Flip Cup, a 4:00am Dance Dance Revolution competition, and the cops only showed up twice investigating noise complaints! I'd say we successfully dragged the birthday boy into the first hours of his 27th year with style. So, I'm gonna get some rest. How's about a mix tape for you. RULES for uninitiated noobs : I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods [...]

How about some more colour in your lives? You know you need some. So come in, Aaron... "Oh yellow moon can you tell me, if the girl's with another man?" Sets the tone for yet another diverse hand picked six pack for your listening pleasure, coloured yellow this time. Featuring sweet New Orleans soul by the Neville Brothers, sharp lofi jugband sounds by The Scene Is Now, and a horny delta blues by Bertha Lee with 'papa' Charley Patton on guitar. Plus epic prog rock by Peter Hammill's Van Der Graaf, an intense folk song by the late great Jackson [...]

by Ben Greenberg Listening to Paul Simon's music, it isn't immediately apparent that he's Jewish. He sings "Jesus Is The Answer," on an early live record. Then of course, there's the famous lyric, "And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson / Jesus loves you more than you will know." This year he even recorded a straight-faced Christmas song, and his gospel tinged hit "Loves Me like A Rock" features vocal group, The Dixie Hummingbirds. But upon closer inspection, the man is revealed to be a pure blooded Tribesman. Looking even more closely, perhaps it could have been [...]

Jack White + Laura Marling = true musicianship at its finest. These 2 covers of Jackson C. Frank's "Blues Run The Game" and Neil Young's "The Needle And The Damage Done" are the products of Marling's 25-minute recording session over at Jack White's Third Man Records studio. Produced by White, yet still raw and untouched, Marling's incredibly mature voice is center-stage with just her and her guitar. I've always been a sucker for close-miking, and being able to hear the fingers plucking and dragging on the strings give the recordings a really warm tone. Both tracks clock in [...]
Jack White produces Laura Marling as she covers Jackson C. Frank and Neil Young.
The other day I began to describe the origins of the Sunday Mix Tape feature. Today, I'll describe the end of an era. The second fifty mix tapes, which commenced on January 28th, 2007, saw an increased amount of attention paid to marginalized artists. It was almost as if the first few dozen installments were my way of convincing people to come along for the ride, and the second fifty mix tapes were my way of introducing people to the really good shit. Three years ago, before the reissue and the recent Pitchfork review, you'd never see an [...]

On her brand new seventh album Same Girl, South Korean jazz singer Youn Sun Nah covers Rodgers/ Hammerstein, Randy Newman, Metallica, and My Name is Carnival by Jackson C. Frank , the legendary white bluesman with the saddest life story you might ever read. She also interpretes La chanson d'Hélène, originally written by Philippe Sarde and Jean-Loup Dabadie for the movie Les choses de la vie , and does a remarkable job. A daring one as well, since it's surely impossible to capture the magic Romy Schneider created with her vocals forty years ago. The male [...]

Edition number 30 of Wild Weekend is upon us, so let´s consult the iPod shuffle like the ancient Greeks once did with the oracle of Delphi. What do the musical gods have in store for us this time around? Some ska, some flamenco, some pure pop, some folk, some grunge, and some Lou, who´s a genre in his own right. Not bad, gods. Not bad. I´ll give you that. Let´s get going with a creepy and beautiful folksong from the pen of Jackson C. Frank, he of Blues Run [...]
