Jack White + Laura Marling = true musicianship at its finest. These 2 covers of Jackson C. Frank's "Blues Run The Game" and Neil Young's "The Needle And The Damage Done" are the products of Marling's 25-minute recording session over at Jack White's Third Man Records studio. Produced by White, yet still raw and untouched, Marling's incredibly mature voice is center-stage with just her and her guitar. I've always been a sucker for close-miking, and being able to hear the fingers plucking and dragging on the strings give the recordings a really warm tone. Both tracks clock in [...]

The other day I began to describe the origins of the Sunday Mix Tape feature. Today, I'll describe the end of an era. The second fifty mix tapes, which commenced on January 28th, 2007, saw an increased amount of attention paid to marginalized artists. It was almost as if the first few dozen installments were my way of convincing people to come along for the ride, and the second fifty mix tapes were my way of introducing people to the really good shit. Three years ago, before the reissue and the recent Pitchfork review, you'd never see an [...]

On her brand new seventh album Same Girl, South Korean jazz singer Youn Sun Nah covers Rodgers/ Hammerstein, Randy Newman, Metallica, and My Name is Carnival by Jackson C. Frank , the legendary white bluesman with the saddest life story you might ever read. She also interpretes La chanson d’Hélène, originally written by Philippe Sarde and Jean-Loup Dabadie for the movie Les choses de la vie , and does a remarkable job. A daring one as well, since it’s surely impossible to capture the magic Romy Schneider created with her vocals forty years ago. The male [...]

Edition number 30 of Wild Weekend is upon us, so let´s consult the iPod shuffle like the ancient Greeks once did with the oracle of Delphi. What do the musical gods have in store for us this time around? Some ska, some flamenco, some pure pop, some folk, some grunge, and some Lou, who´s a genre in his own right. Not bad, gods. Not bad. I´ll give you that. Let´s get going with a creepy and beautiful folksong from the pen of Jackson C. Frank, he of Blues Run [...]

On September 21, Karen Elson will release the second single off her debut LP, The Ghost Who Walks , via iTunes and on 7” vinyl through Third Man Records. While the A-side will be (one of my faves) “The Truth Is In The Dirt,” the flip side features Elson’s previously unreleased cover of 1966 Donovan single “Season of the Witch.” Preceding this release, however, Elson will make her late-night TV debut on the Late Show with David Letterman (you know, that show her husband performed on last night ). Although we’ll have to wait [...]

With all the activity swirling around Fleet Foxes the last year, it's easy to look at anything short of a major tour and multiple TV appearances as quiet times. But there has been a lot going on behind the scenes in the FF camp: On the website, you'll find all kinds of photos of the band as they've spent the past several months in-studio working on their second album. Lots of shots of analog tape machines, which should keep all the rock and roll Luddites happy. They also post a behind-the-scenes documentary from [...]

I heard this song today at the end of a tour documentary featuring the Fleet Foxes' leading man Robin Pecknold. You can view the short documentary here . It's pretty cool and worth a look. What's also worth a look is the vintage photography that the Fleet Foxes use as the backdrop to their website. Listen to the classic sixties folk (the song heard on the documentary) by Jackson C. Frank below. - Joel Jackson C. Frank - "Blues Run The Game"

The beautiful and talented Laura Marling has been working with Jack White doing Jackson C. Frank and Neil Young covers. Clicksky here for the Jackson C. Frank original . Here for Laura live . I wasn't familiar with Jackson C. Frank 's story; nice that he was eventually covered by Simon and Garfunkel. Laura Marling: New Romantic. mp3 Jackson C. Frank: Blues Run the [...]

Back in May, I posted video of Laura Marling’s flawless live version of Jackson C. Frank classic “Blues Run the Game” on her last U.S. tour. As it turns out, we’re going to get another one-take performance of the cover, recorded this time in one of the coolest active analog studios in the country for one of our favorite indie labels: Jack White’s Third Man Records. Here’s the kicker, though: on the flip side will be Marling’s version of Neil Young’s iconic 1972 song “Needle and the Damage Done” (which she played for our friends at [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Record collectors love stories like this: in 1974, 24-year-old blind musician Bob Desper went into the studio, recorded his first -- and only - album, 'New Sounds,' released a run of 500 vinyl copies and promptly stopped making music. Oh, and each song was the result of one take. Since then, Desper's debut has gone on to fetch upwards of $1,000 by collectors, but for those that can only really afford the normal price of an album, Desper's lost folk gem [...]

The opening track on Jackson C. Frank’s Paul Simon-produced debut album is the kind of tune all singer/songwriters wish they had written. Once covered by Simon himself (with Garfunkel!), Bert Jansch, and Nick Drake, “Blues Run the Game” is one of the greatest folk/blues songs of all time and, undoubtedly, the high-water mark on Frank’s legacy. I don’t foresee it ever happening, but if anyone decides to make a biopic about this man, they’d have plenty of material. Frank’s life was fraught with tragedy, from being severely burned in an accident that left over a dozen [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Midway through British songstress Laura Marling 's headlining gig Thursday night in Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Music Hall of Williamsburg, her backing band vacated the stage, leaving just her alone -- and free to tell stories. When introducing a new song -- she never gave the title, but often said the line "bed of my bones" -- she mentioned that she'd recently played it in Los Angeles. She asked the West Coast audience if it would be good for a film and relayed that 90 percent [...]

I love the song "Rock In The Sea" by Shocking Blue, which incorporates some of the lyrics and spirit of the old mountain tune "I Wish I was A Rock In The Sea," first recorded by the folklorist Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Rock In The Sea- Shocking Blue As a fruit tree salesman, Lunsford travelled extensively through North Carolina and traded traditional tunes with his customers and acquaintances. I Wish I Was A Mole In The Ground- Bascom Lamar Lunsford [...]

Jackson C. Frank discovered music at the age of 11 while in a hospital recovering from injuries caused by an explosion and fire in his school (which killed a heap of his classmates). Later he moved to England and rubbed elbows with some folky bigwigs (his only album was produced by Paul Simon, and his songs were covered by everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to the Fairport Convention to Nick Drake). Despite his amazing talent, he was marred with physical and psychological scars, resulting in an endless spiral of depression, bad health and bad luck. Cheery little story for [...]
I forgot to blog yesterday. Too much happened. So I'm back-dating this entry to Sunday Night because...oh, if only my night had gone well enough for me to get this thing done. I keep repeating the words from that Partridge Family song "C'mon, Get Happy" but instead of the traditional lyrics I've been substituting my own version: Trav'lin' along there's a song that I'm singin' / "C'mon get depressed" That said, here's your mix tape. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth [...]
