I'm kind of weird about my tunes. Whenever I see a mix is in a single Mp3, normally I don't bother fooling with it. Why? I'm lazy and I don't want to skip through to find the parts I like (kinda like a cassette tape, no?). But, A Blog Called Fresh compiled it, and I spotted it over at Dirtywork so I downloaded it. And I played the entire thing. So now I'll return the favor. Pop the hood for tracklist. We got some bossanova, funk, old [...]

Floorboards creak all night long in our house; the ghosts must go soon, all night they tremble and fold their secrets in the growing heat of the trees. I remember again the night my roots exploded and mud sloshed in my guts. How you resex the swinging trees and sing our trembling skins to sleep. - Spencer Reece. Ghazals for Spring. " Spring, in full swing. Part. 23 Antonio Carlos Jobim - Andorinha Stone [...]

Madlib the eccentric producer of many hiphop classics for Stonesthrow Records and the successful Shades of Blue series for Blue Note Records loves Brasilian music. When he went to Brasil in 2002 with Mochilla to participate in the production of Brasilintime his one mission was to meet Ivan "Mamao" Conti the drummer of the legendary trio Azymuth. Madlib had made an Azymuth tribute record he wanted to play for him. This moment across generations and continents was revealed in the critically acclaimed documentary Brasilintime: Batucada com Discos. Now the fruits of this meeting and eventual collaboration are being released by [...]

Back in Istanbul to dismal weather, too hot/cloudy/humid. We'll be back on track soon, but first a selection from yesterday's deep abstract hip-hop session which yielded a lot of good stuff from the last two years. It's very rewarding to visit your archives back after a while! image cred Jackson Conti - Casa Forte Madlib - Indian Deli Yesterday's New Quintet - Julani Flying Lotus - Rickshaw Lukid - Time doing so mean

Yay, Friday! Finally! What a seemingly endless week that was. At times I thought that the sand was getting stuck in the hourglass. We fall back this weekend, so its like the sand will actually go backwards back up the... yeah, I'm gonna stop talking about this now. I've put together a playlist based on some bands that were on yesterday's Morning Becomes Eclectic . This first song is the best one, the kind that would sound great coming through the earphones on a chilly grey Breaking Away -type bike ride: Lemon Jelly: [...]

I noticed going through September's Spin that there were a lot of 3 1/2 to 4 star reviews being given. Let's look at a few of them with aviation in mind: Bradford Cox is usually the captain of Deerhunter, however, on this excellent song (the best of the bunch) he lets co-pilot/guitarist Lockett Pundt have some fun on lead vocals: Deerhunter: Agoraphobia .mp3 Spin says that zeitgeist band of the moment Delta Spirit "rumble and stomp" like "sweaty barnstorming aces"(Direct quote!): [...]

I know absolutely nothing about Brazilian Samba. I do know a little about Madlib, primarily that his music sounds very good on glaucoma medication. He has a new record coming out next month called Sujinho. It is a mixture of Brazilian samba and Bossa Nova. It will be his 65th album over the last four years, I like each one in its own way. This is possibly because of our mutual connection based on having severe glaucoma. Billed as Jackson Conti, the album is a collaboration between Madlib and Ivan Conti, the drummer for Otis Jackson [...]
I would like to be posting more, but recently, I've been doing more plugging of events where I'm DJing. I can't continue to do that in good faith, however, especially as Michael and Patrick are still valiantly carrying the mighty Audiversity torch. So today I'm going to plug another event and offer up some music, because 1) I have another set to promote, and 2) something's been bugging me about this Jackson Conti collaboration between Madlib and Brazilian drummer and percussionist Ivan "Mamao" Conti of Azymuth . [...]

Goodies come in many shapes and kinesthetic flavours (and many a Madlib musical persona). Stones Throw are releasing the Yesterday's Universe album (July 17). This is one of Madlib's many projects, consisting of Yesterday's New Quintet 's (Joe McDuphrey, Ahmad Miller, Monk Huges, Malik Flavors and Otis Jackson Jr) funked-up jazz experiments. Only, you do understand, those five names are guises of the same Madlib. When you think about it, it's not so much fantastical as it is a story, a tale of fantastical substance, [...]
Oh the weather is nice and hot now. Chillin' at the beach yesterday was very nice. I had some Egyptian food yesterday at a friend's Grad party. His family was there and it was the most Egyptians I've seen outside of Discovery Channel's special on Cairo ! We are working on a summer music podcast, or just mix. We've been listenin' to a lot of instrumentals and gettin' back to electronic. Whether you're in summer school, full timin', vacay, or straight bummin' it, here's a really good mix of hiphop, instrumentals, downbeat, bossa, indietronic, and acoustic. [...]

As it says on the Stones Throw site, free-jazz ensemble Yesterday's New Quintet (a jazz beats band made up of Ahmad Miller, Monk Hughes, Malik Flavors & Joe McDuphre; all of whom, really, are Otis Jackson, Jr., also known as Madlib) have broken up. I can imagine the fragments of Madlib's tender psyche shattering apart, as he becomes unable to personify the unique band members, to separate out their aspirations, their goals, their muses... At least, until one reads a little further to find out that, while Yesterday's New Quintet may have been disbanded, [...]
