Jaga Jazzist at Oya 2009 ( photo by Jan Erik Svendesen ) Plenty of your hipper bands might vary their influences list with acts like Tortoise, Charles Mingus, and the Neptunes just to prove they are cool. With the risky, sprawling, and somehow serene Jaga Jazzist , you can actually hear it. The ten-piece jazz-meets-electronics band from Norway came to life in 1994 when their main brain and songwriter, Lars Horntveth, was only 14. Two years later their debut album, Jævla Jazzist Grete Stitz, appeared, and Norwegians got their first taste of the band's [...]

The middle of the week is the proverbial grey area in the average Londoner's calendar. The onset of a Wednesday marks the end of the working week blues, with the dawn of the weekend a palpable arm's length away. Strung out across a washing line of a week, I laundered its troubles by listening to music of an equally expansive nature. Ensconced within the intimate surroundings of King's Cross' Scala club, a furtive buzz hangs in the air as the crowed waits for Jaga Jazzist to grace the stage. Appeasing [...]

Unlike last year, when I managed a top ten list of albums released in 2009, I'm pretty sure I didn't listen to more than five new albums all of this year. In fact, with the possible exception of Toronto Fringe plays , I don't think I managed to see, hear, or do enough of any one thing worth making a top ten list out of. So here's a meandering list of my favourites of 2010 in a variety of things. Best Dog Adoption In all humility, mine. Look at that picture! She's so cute. We [...]
As the ghosts of summer depart, the skyline paints itself a solemn grey - the cool winds of loss become ever more apparent. Not only through heat, but also by the withdrawl of warm colours - even the vibrancy of reds and yellows dull somewhat, leaving a void of life in its place.Autumn is indeed the struggle, but soon even those steeped in brown tinted age must soon move on. It doesn't mean I
I've always been impressed by certain artists ability to take a song of one genre and translate it to the opposite side of the spectrum while still maintaining its identity. Sure, every house EP has a vocal house and progressive house remix on it these days, but I'm talking about a much wider spectrum: jazz to minimal. Uh huh. If you're not familiar with Jaga Jazzist, they are a very established Norwegian Jazz group. They blew up in 2002 when the BBC named their debut album the best jazz record of the year. Recently their sound has attracted [...]

Jaga Jazzist is back with a dense & kaleidoscopic new album called One-Armed Bandit, which performs the alchemical miracle of converting pure chaos into luscious musical adventures. Neat trick! Jaga Jazzist - One-Armed Bandit (edit) Jaga Jazzist - Toccata...

The name suggests a one-person show, a jazzist of the Jaga persuasion, whatever that might be, but in fact, this is a nine piece band from Norway formed 15 years ago by a then 14-year old, Lars Horntveth. The name also implies perhaps a certain musical sound, but unlike say, The Jazz Butcher , Jaga Jazzist is quite jazzy. Jazzy's the wrong word though because that makes it sound as if the band uses jazz flourishes and this couldn't be farther from the truth. Jaga Jazzist is jazz. Jazz purists might disagree, but shame on them. Jaga Jazzist explores [...]

This week, we're diving into some minimalist techno with German electronica artist Pantha Du Prince. His new LP, Black Noise, ventures past his previous album without breaking the subtle, stark barriers he's set for himself. The music is by no means a lush treasure trove of sound, but still gives a listener a lot of think about. We've also got Efterklang's latest release, Magic Chairs, on dock; a

Jaga Jazzist- One Armed Bandit From: One Armed Bandit [Ninja Tune, 2010] I'm pretty sure that even if John McEntire weren't listed in the totally awesome liner notes for the new Jaga Jazzist album One Armed Bandit , listeners would be able to make the Tortoise connection for themselves. So if that association is something turns you off, it's a safe-ish bet that this album isn't for you. For the rest of you, submitted for your approval is the Topkapi -meets-fuzz-bass of the title track. [...]

Yesterdays first attempt at getting through the ever increasing emails went fairly well I thought... 450 emails read and errr 5 tracks posted! It's honestly not that I get sent a lot of terrible music (although I do get my fair share) its more that I don't really see the point in featuring tracks I think are merely " alright ". There was also a huge amount of trash in there too, " So You Think You Can Dance " updates, and PR lies... " Hi Music Like Dirt, We've been reading your blog for some time now and [...]
