The string [...]

Guest Post by: Brendan Muruch Editor Vic may not have been fond of Amanda Palmer's ukulele era, but I've been enjoying her performance of popular Radiohead hits on her Magical Ukulele: Even more awesome is the fact that she brought her ukulele to C-Span. Amanda's Ukulele anthem is among the free downloads available from her [...]
Going into Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings , I had no prior knowledge of Jake Shimabukuro, or his particular talents. An hour later I was not only online researching Shimabukuro’s catalogue of work, but also contemplating if I should include a ukulele on my Christmas list. While the film itself plays like a traditional documentary, there is no denying that Jake Shimabukuro is an extremely talented individual whose positive attitude is rather infectious. The film starts off during the second stop on his West Coast tour. Despite receiving both critical and commercial success, [...]

Indian poet, Kabir , once wrote, “Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation. Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound.” Much can be said without using words. Sound, body language and energy can all be as powerful if not more so than the spoken word. When a song abandons words, it must find a way to captivate the listener. And once it succeeds in captivating, holding the listener's attention until the song is over is the greatest test. Jazz music has been doing [...]
The Oregon Zoo continues their Summer Concert Series this Friday with Grammy-nominated guitarist Leo Kottke and ukelele master Jake Shimabukuro . The two musicians are playing a few select dates together in the Pacific Northwest before they continue on their solo world tours. Leo Kottke's innovative finger-picking style and unconventional tuning has always put the artist in a special category of musicians. Widely known as a folk artist, Kottke's influences from blues to jazz meld together naturally with his own unique style. As a result of being pressured to be a singer-songwriter early [...]

Entourage is finally over. Whether you loved the last episode ( Entourage season 8 episode 8 ) or it left a sour taste in your mouth, one thing they did do right was the impressive soundtrack. Obviously the biggest question is, who was that crazy opera-band that they featured so heavily? It was nothing more than the absolutely impressive young Italian trio called Il Volo . The actual trio appeared on the series finale and while they only had a few seconds of air time, seeing these young kids sing opera left me speechless. I [...]
