Because you need a pile of music. Because James Yorkston just landed in my inbox. Because Jonathan Coulton is cooler than words, and Jewlie can rightfully tell me "I told you so." Because it is just that kind of day: a pile of music, for you lovely people out there. I received an email from Domino Records regarding new material from a lad named James Yorkston, and it's positively wonderful. At first I was skeptical (How many singer-songwriters can you enjoy before they all sound the same?). Yorkston certainly doesn't, I can say it's the strangest music I've received all week, but I can also say that I present it to you with my highest vote of confidence. Sorry for the short post, I have quite a busy day! [mp3] James Yorkston - Woozy with Cider [mp3] James Yorkston - Summer Song

FROM DOMINO RECORDS: Once you've heard James Yorkston's new arresting, intimate and subtle album, you may find yourself wondering how to categorize it. Or maybe you will do the sensible thing and not care how about its phylum - which suits James Yorkston just fine. James Yorkston - The Brussels Rambler (Domino 2006) James Yorkston – The Year of the Leopard / Domino If there was ever a perfect time for listening to James Yorkston's third proper full-length, it's right now as I sit in my frostbitten apartment with the lights cut off and the blinds pulled way up to take advantage of the back-alley street light for ambiance (a setting that surely amplifies any pleasant mood). The sky has a just-folded-blanket-like smoothness to it and the moon is appropriately cuddled away inside [...]

Guillemots - Through The Windowpane [...]

While I?m trying to work out what my top 20 songs of the year are (so many songs, so hard to choose!), I?ll press ahead with the next installment in my end of the year best of lists - my favourite gigs of the year. And because I?m not finding much time to post these days, I?ll save myself some writing time by quoting my own reviews of these gigs. 10. Born and raised in a small Fife village, James Yorkston has been following musical pursuits since the age of 8. He followed a girlfriend out of the village to settle in Edinburgh at the age of 17, inspired to see the world, and write songs, by his love of music like Madagascan guitarist D’Gary and folk singer Anne Briggs . Six years ago he joined Edinburgh garage-punk band Huckleberry, then, three days later, also landed his first solo gig. “Someone came in to my friend’s record shop asking if they knew [...]
