Fuck man, the new Girl Talk album is so fantastic it's sick. So many instantly recognizable samples plus a ton of obscure shit that fits so well I can't believe. We're leavin' in the mornin' for the holiday weekend, and will hopefully get something posted during that span. If not, see y'all on Tuesday and don't blow off all your fingers. For the time being, enjoy the tunes below. New site design and more music on flipside. MP3 | James - Laid [...]

James, the blokes responsible for one of my all-time favorite albums, are back, seven years after a split that nearly consigned the band to being all-but-forgotten. Big in England, the band had the misfortune to chart just one song in the U.S., which in the attention deficit of this country's pop culture means you're a one-hit wonder, regardless of the quality of the rest of your music. THIS WAS MY FIRST-EVER POSTING BACK ON 29TH SEPTEMBER 2006. IT WAS ORIGINALLY ENTITLED 'SONGS THAT WERE WASTED ON THE B-SIDE (PART 1)' We've all got our favourites....great songs that were only ever recorded as B-sides. I'm hoping to feature a few of these over the coming weeks. This particular offering is more wasted than some. It was put on the reverse of a mix of a single at a time when
FROM SUNDAY 22nd OCTOBER 2006, NOT LONG AFTER I STARTED UP THE BLOG; THE POST WAS ORIGINALLY CALLED 'UNDER THE COVERS (2) It's a glorious autumnal day in my home city. It's mornings like this that make me think I don't really want to live anywhere else. After the New Order-fest of the past week, I am now trying to resume something of a normal service. Time for an appropriate cover version from

So, in case you hadn't noticed, I have a soft spot for James . It goes back to about 1992 when I saw them live for the first time and they were the most amazing thing I'd ever seen on a stage. Back then, in the U.S., when every band was starting to sound like Nirvana or trying to sound like R.E.M., James were incredibly strange and as such, very very cool. The love affair has continued for 16 years, I'd like to say unabated, but I can't, because Millionaires and Pleased to Meet You [...]

If we were ever asked to dream up a fantasy music bill, we might very well start things with local troubadour RODDY HART , move on to some raucous rock from THE FRATELLIS , soften the mood with TOM McRAE's candlelit delights, increase the tempo with a bit of FRIGHTENED RABBIT , let ALPHABEAT [...]

Man, time flies when you're having fun and writing about it. On this day five years ago, yours truly fired up Blogger and tried out this newfangled fad called " blogging ." A lot has changed since then (I've moved six times, had three different cats, used three different blogging systems and had four different blog designs ) and it's been quite a journey from writing stuff that I never thought anyone will read to running one of the longest running music blogs on the web*. [...]

Photography by drah.moune Oh James, you wear your emotions right there, don't you? Listening to Hey Ma , I feel like I'm looking through your eyes, how you seeing the world, how you are feeling your experiences.... after these rough few weeks at work, it's not a bad feeling to be somewhere else for 46.2 minutes, no, not too bad at all. Enjoy! James - 01 Bubbles James - 02 Hey Ma James - 03 Waterfall [...]

Toronto - James is a funny band, they have always been around (22 years since they first released their album) , they have had a few smash hits (Sit Down, Laid, Sound, Tommorrow) and yet they have never been at the forefront or heavily mentioned. I guess they are always that reliable and consistent band, always in the background, always putting out stellar music. The Ron Francis of britpop, I guess. Speaking of Ron Francis, when I was a kid and obsessed with the Penguins (an obsession that has yet to cease), I wrote [...]
OOOOOOooooooooo! tim booth tim booth. Dance of the bad angels. Booth. Hey Ma! Morrissey's ringleader of the tormenters was a big diss... for me. Hey Ma is the only hope to love britpop again. Where is songs like bittersweet symphony, girl afraid, laid? The songwriting is dead or i'm deaf? I want... [[ This is a content summary only. I'm kind of curious to know what the 90s revival is going to spit out. I mean, it's presumably inevitable that some time in about 2012 or so we all start looking back at that decade with a sort of patronising, nostalgic affection, but I am still struggling to entirely picture it. Firstly, perhaps [...]

James is one of those bands that I didn't really like the first time I heard them, but came to love later. At first I think it was the trumpet that kept me from embracing them, which I really can't rationalize. For a while I just had this bizarre prejudice against horn players in rock bands who weren't named Bobby Keys or Clarence Clemons. There was also the fact that Tim Booth was a little too dramatic for my tastes. I'm not sure whether he eventually toned it down, or I became more tolerant of [...]
